Our little lifesavers have a video message for you to help keep your loved ones - and theirs - safe by the sea.

We hope you're keeping safe and well this week.

For many countries, this marks our 13th week in lockdown since the outbreak of COVID-19. And throughout these months, friends and family have never felt more important.

Some of us have been isolating with family at home. Some of us have been connecting online with the family we can't be with. And others have been answering the call for help with their family, bringing someone in trouble by the water safely home.

Many of our lifeboat crews include fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, brothers and sisters, and nieces and nephews. And, if you're heading to the beach this Father's Day, our little lifesavers have a video message for you to help keep your loved ones - and theirs - safe by the sea.

We're continuing to roll out our lifeguard service to more beaches this summer. Check to find your nearest safe spot to plan your next adventure.

What's the four letter word?

Hi Renee,

Thanks to your support, our safety campaigners, lifeguards and lifeboat crews are keeping people safe right now. It's a busy time for them, with the school holidays underway and more people flocking to our own coasts rather than travelling abroad. If you're planning a seaside trip, take a look at our safety advice, and see if there's a lifeguarded beach near you.

If people do get into danger this summer, our lifesavers are ready to respond - they will no doubt be in action this weekend. And at the start of every rescue is a special person who made it possible. That's why volunteer crew member Emma Sutton has a poem for you, all about a four letter word that lifeboat crews don't use very often: hero.

The lockdown and pandemic has meant many of us have had to spend time away from our families and loved ones. Doing our bit to help our communities by staying apart from those we cherish the most. But aside from the pandemic, there are families that are still together today thanks to you.

By powering our lifesavers with your donations and support, you've helped bring home those in desperate trouble at sea. Back to their mums and dads, brothers and sisters, daughters and sons. Because you were there for us, we could be there for them when they needed us most.

''I wouldn''t be standing here without them''

When Colin Prentice collapsed on Porthminster Beach in St Ives last August, the RNLI lifeguards on duty that day ran to his rescue. Not knowing that Colin was suffering from a bleed on the brain, the lifeguards worked to stabilise him until he could be evacuated by air ambulance. The quick action of the RNLI lifesavers that day, using the training you help provide, meant that Colin was able to defy the odds and make a miraculous recovery.

This August, Colin and his family returned to the beach to give their thanks to the lifeguards who saved his life. Read on to find out how much of an impact those actions on the beach have had on the Prentice family''s lives.

Hello Renee,

It fills me with pride when I tell people that my son James is a volunteer deputy coxswain at Torbay Lifeboat Station. And that people like you care enough about him to give a donation to the RNLI. Just as he brings people home safe to their loved ones, you bring him home safe to us. Thank you for being James's lifesaver. We hope we can count on your support this Christmas.

That's my boy
My James has always put others first. When he was 8 years old, he drew a picture of the lifeboat station after a school visit. Now he goes to the rescue of complete strangers - even amidst the risk of COVID-19.

I still feel the same ache of concern that any parent would when their child bravely sets out into the unknown. And with the health crisis this year, who hasn't felt that concern about their loved ones? That's my boy - he makes me so proud.

You can be proud too. The kindness of people like you has kept James and his crewmates trained and equipped to brave the unexpected - and come home safe. You're just as admirable as the crew and I can't thank you enough for caring about my boy.

The drop in RNLI income as a result of the pandemic is expected to be millions. The money that would usually help give lifeboat crews everything they need just never came in. Hi Renee,

We've had some glorious weather around the UK and Ireland over these last few weeks. But as summer arrives and people flock to the coast, it's quickly adding up to the busiest season we've seen for our lifesavers.

Daily life is still challenging for so many of us at the moment, including our lifeboat volunteers. Regardless of how the lockdown restrictions are affecting them personally, they're still responding to emergencies whenever the call for help comes.

Just like Hunstanton crew did on Monday 25 May as they rescued 14 adults, 5 children and 5 dogs from being cut off by the tide at Scolt Head Island. You powered our volunteers to bring everyone home safely - even in these exceptional circumstances.

As you'll see in our rescue roundup video, you're bringing many others back to safety too. We're so grateful to have you beside us.

Former Coxswain Henry Blogg is famous for his courageous rescues at sea, commanding Cromer lifeboat crew aboard the Watson class lifeboat H.F Bailey.

Crowds would gather in town for a chance to see their dependable workhorse H.F Bailey, who helped to save 344 lives at sea throughout her operational life. And today, they still do. The lifeboat is proudly displayed at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, in great company of other lifesavers - like our museum volunteers, shop volunteers and education volunteers, who we're celebrating with pride this Volunteers' Week.

Hi Renee,

I'm Steve, Commander at Tower Lifeboat Station. I hope you and your family are keeping safe and well this summer.

It's a summer like no other, isn't it? After staying indoors for months, people are starting to venture out more. Campsites, holiday parks, pubs and restaurants are now open. Schools have broken up. And, with restricted travel abroad and nervousness about doing so, more people are visiting the coast. Our beaches, coastlines and waterways are getting even busier.

And that's why I'm emailing you today. Will you help us through this crisis?

We're still on call 24/7. But saving lives at sea looks a bit different these days. One of the biggest things we've had to learn is how to carry out sea rescues while physically distancing and keeping ourselves and the people we rescue safe. We've got gloves and masks, strict hygiene procedures, and new guidelines for how to give first aid.

There are lots of people to protect and less money to do it with because we haven't been able to fundraise in our usual ways. So lifeboat volunteers, like my crew, are constantly dealing with new challenges. It's hard. But I'm proud that it's my duty to keep everyone safe.

In tough times, we pull together

We're expecting the RNLI's income to drop by several million pounds this year. Fundraising events still aren't going ahead. And we're facing an uncertain economic future.

That's why I'm asking you to please stand with us by making a donation to the RNLI. Your generosity will help us weather the storm. If you've already donated to us this summer, we really appreciate it. It means a lot to have you standing with us as we face the unknown.

I couldn''t be a lifeboat volunteer without the support of my two families - my own family and crewmates like you in my RNLI family. I''m extremely proud and grateful to have both.

You''re part of a supportive family
My mum''s passing 11 years ago brought my family even closer together. They have to put up with me running out the door when the pager sounds, especially at Christmas time. I know they worry about me, going to sea in all kinds of conditions to help those in trouble. My dad even tracks the lifeboat''s progress online to keep an eye on me!

But I tell them that as long as I have the support of people like you in my RNLI family, they needn''t worry. Because it''s your kindness that funds all the kit, equipment and training that keeps lifeboat volunteers like me safe when saving lives at sea.

Together we can brave the unexpected
We''d usually help raise money too through our shop and fundraising events. But the health crisis this year forced all RNLI shops to close and events to be cancelled, meaning thousands of pounds just never came in. That''s why your donation this Christmas is so crucial. This summer, we're all facing different challenges and uncertainty. But there's one thing you can rely on: our crews. All around the UK and Ireland, RNLI crew members - like me - are still on call 24/7, ready to launch at a moment's notice. I'm proud to be a volunteer because I know I can make a difference to people's lives. And so can you.

You can help to power our lifesaving service. Right now, we're facing a summer storm of activity. With lockdown restrictions easing, people are flocking to the coast and the beaches are as busy as ever. We need to be ready to protect everyone.

And the health crisis has hit us hard. Our fundraising activities have been cancelled. Our volunteers can't host their usual coffee mornings or station open days. The funds we count on are falling - right now, we're facing a funding shortfall of millions by the end of the year. We need your help.

As the nights draw in, and it gets cold out, many of us are starting to look forward to the hope of the Christmas season - and, even though this year might look different, we want it to feel as special as possible, together as a crew. A family's rescue - in their own words

Earlier this summer, a family of three headed out for a day on the beach with their paddleboards and kayak. They were well prepared as they headed out onto the water - but, within moments, the conditions quickly changed.

Celebrating 90 years of Lerwick lifesavers

On this day in July 1930, volunteers at Lerwick were opening their doors for the first time as a working lifeboat station on the Shetland Islands.

Since then, generations of courageous crew members have made magnificent milestones at one of the most northerly RNLI lifeboat stations - from receiving their first lifeboat, Lady Jane and Martha Ryland, to performing one of the most dramatic rescues in RNLI history.

Did you know that one of our biggest lifesavers lives on land, powers at 10mph and has the strength to pull an 18-tonne Shannon class straight out of the sea? Say hello to our trusty tractor - affectionately known in our RNLI family as the Launch and Recovery system. This week, we're virtually putting you in the driver's seat so you can discover how our tractors operate, drive effortlessly across sand or shingle, and transform into a mobile slipway that can launch a lifeboat to rescue.

Plus, discover how to safely enjoy open water swimming this winter and how you can help protect your friends and family by sharing our new, helpful safety videos.

So, buckle up and let's dive in!

In light of recent government announcements all RNLI shops and museums in England and the RNLI College closed on Thursday 5 November. RNLI shops, visitor centres and museums in other parts of the UK and Ireland will open as and when Government guidance in those areas allows in the future. Our lifeboat stations remain operational but are not open to visitors.

Prepare to launch

If you dream of driving a tractor, feast your eyes on the RNLI's state-of-the-art Shannon Launch and Recovery System (SLARS) unit in action.

Used to launch and recover the ?2.1M (?2.3M) Shannon class all-weather lifeboat, the SLARS acts as a mobile slipway. There are 22 in service, including the one shown in our short film at Hoylake Lifeboat Station. These impressive vehicles can be submerged in cold, rough seas up to a depth of 9m and have a turntable cradle to rotate the lifeboat 180 degrees, so it's ready to launch again in minutes.

Are you thinking of getting into open water swimming?

Under the current restrictions, you might not be able to get to the swimming pool. So you might be considering heading outdoors for an open water swim. Research shows that open water swimming can increase happiness, boost immunity and could help protect against dementia. But it isn't without risk.

If you''re new to the sport, this isn''t the time of year for beginners to be trying new water sports as conditions get worse for the winter and lifeguards are no longer patrolling beaches. You''re helping young people stay safe

An important part of the RNLI's work is to help young people make safe decisions in and around the water. Normally, water safety education takes place in person or in classrooms. Hi Renee,

Some of us are gearing up to enjoy a long Bank Holiday this weekend. We hope there's good weather and fun memories in store for you.

But, if you're out and about, remember to stay safe - and if you see anyone in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Our partner, Ford, are helping to remind everyone to #BeBeachSafe with a new activity called Tide Tracks. Tide Tracks uses custom tyres to create and imprint vital water safety messages like 'float to live' and 'no inflatables' across stretches of sand. In this video, you can see the cool tyres in action with a Ford Ranger - the vehicle our lifeguards use to patrol beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. So, next time you're at the beach, look down at the sand - you might just catch an important message!

Come rain or shine, our lifesavers have been incredibly busy this summer - and your generosity is behind every launch. Find out how crew members from Baltimore, Cork, rescued three people on a broken-down yacht. Dear Renee,

I hope you and your family are keeping safe and well. Life has been difficult and challenging for us all, and my local lifeboat community in Hartlepool is no exception.

While most of the country shelters at home, our crew is still on call 24/7. We're ready to launch at a moment's notice. The RNLI is an essential emergency service and our crew and station volunteers are key workers. So, regardless of how the lockdown has affected us personally, we're still responding to emergencies.

The health crisis has hit our income hard. As our service continues, fundraising activities have stopped. There are no more coffee mornings and no station open days. Our shops have brought down their shutters for the time being. The funds we count on to power our lifesaving service have gone down. That's why we need you to stand with us in these uncertain times, so we can keep everyone safe.

Whatever you''ve done to help this year, we''re so thankful for your kindness. Your generosity meant that when the call to rescue came in, RNLI lifesavers were able to answer it. So you''ve given these people the best Christmas gift of all - more time with their loved ones. Because of you, they''re here with their families. And that''s a gift you can''t put a price on.

Fancy a festive dip?

Since the traditional Christmas dip in the sea isn''t recommended this year, Rhyl Lifeboat Station have come up with a clever alternative. Take part in a virtual festive dip from the comfort of your home. You can join in from the bath, an outdoor paddling pool, or a hot tub if you''re extremely lucky! The more creative you get, the better.

Anyone can take part - just have your festive dip between 26 December 2020 and 2 January 2021. All we ask is that you donate ?5 on the Big Dip''s JustGiving page and nominate five of your friends and family to get involved in the challenge too! You can post a photo or video of your challenge on the Facebook event page and use the hashtag #BigRNLIDip. Before taking part, please read our safety guidance.

A brave new year

Hello Renee,

As an RNLI supporter, you bring hope to people. And we hope that emails like this one bring some hope to you too. Because, while it feels like many of our lives are once again on pause, the lifesaving is still going on, all powered by you. Lifeboat crews launched time and time again over the festive period so that people could live on, into this brave new year.

While the ongoing public health crisis means that the start of 2021 feels all too familiar, we continue to work together to keep people safe on and in the water. After all, we are driven by the belief that every life is worth saving. Everyone deserves the chance to look beyond the difficulties we face today with courage for a better future - whether we are hopeful for ourselves or those we love. Thank you for giving people that chance.

You're part of one big crew that also includes the wonderful shore-based volunteers like those recognised in The New Year Honours, and the RNLI rescuers who feature in Saving Lives at Sea. The programme returns tonight (7 January), with episode 9 showing on BBC 2 at 8pm. And if you''re in the UK, you can catch up on the whole series on iPlayer.

We''re all looking forward to the days when we can see our family, friends and fellow crew members. Until then, here's to hope in 2021.

A year of saving lives

Not many of us will be looking back on 2020 fondly. The strange year of lockdowns and pandemics is one that we will hope to forget. But there is something you should never forget. The lives saved by the RNLI, thanks to your kindness.

In this compilation of rescues, you'll see 40 clips of lifesavers in action. Braving rough seas, battling surf, racing against time to save people from drowning. Every launch, every rescue, every life saved - they were only possible thanks to your support. As we look forward with hope to 2021, don't forget just how important you were last year. Weston-super-Mare lifeboat crew rescue a man from the water

'What started as a single shout had turned into a major incident'

When Weston-super-Mare lifeboat crew launched back in May 2020, they were expecting a routine call out to some people cut off by the tide. Instead, they faced a desperate race against time to save people in the water just seconds away from drowning.

Hear the story of this incredible rescue as told by the lifesavers involved - Liam, Paul and Dave. Then watch the dramatic footage and see just how close they were to being too late.
