New Coffees

It’s an exciting time for us in coffee world, as the seasons bring new things to look forward to…



We’ve got not one, but two delicious coffees from Finca Bosque Lya at the moment. Save 12% when you try the Bosque Lya showcase, and get both together!


There’s also a new coffee on the block from the Ugandan fly crop - a neighbour of the super-popular Kisinga. Fly crops are a chance for farmers to harvest an extra few bags of cherry after the main crop, and there’s often some real gems to be found. Kalingwe is a high altitude lot with bright notes of mango and mandarin orange - a must try! 

Last but by no means least, Gitwe. The first arrival from Rwanda this year, it’s a complex washed Bourbon, which reminds us of marmalade, dates, and shortbread.

Chaff Revisited

We try to produce as little waste as possible here at Rounton Coffee. One of the trickier by-products to deal with from the roasting process is chaff - the paper-thin husks that come away from coffee beans as they roast.

It’s a secret… 

We’ve been tinkering away to create something very special. Coming this Sunday, 1st November.

Midnight Harvest 

It’s not every day you receive an email from your favourite North East brewer (Donzoko Brewing Company) regarding an exciting collaboration… 

This barrel-aged coffee is our side of the experiment. We’ve picked out a delicious Nicaraguan lot from Los Cielitos, and it’s been hibernating in a Bourbon barrel for the last few weeks. Check out the full details over on the blog.

This is a hugely decadent coffee, with notes of vanilla, dried figs, and just the right amount of booze on the finish. It’s our first barrel-aged coffee, and we’re really really pleased with how it has turned out. Try it for yourself here!

The next step is to hand some of the coffee over to Reece - founder and master brewer at Donzoko Brewing Company. His enthusiasm for creating and developing flavour-forward, delicious and innovative beer is commendable, and the results never fail to impress.

Reece will be using it to brew up an equally indulgent beer, and we’re dying to get our hands on some when it’s ready! You can follow his progress here.

From Western Sumatra, Kerinci is a washed coffee with bags of complexity, and a fantastic body. It''s really interesting to see what the Sumatran varietals have to offer when stripped back to their bare selves, rather than going through the Giling Basah process typical to Sumatra.

There’s something reassuring about the predictable change of the seasons. For us, it means the arrival of new coffees, and we’ve been tinkering away to create an extra-special Festive Blend - available now.



After the year we’ve all had, we’re unashamedly going head-first into the Christmas spirit. With this blend, we wanted to create something to bring a little bit of cheer, in its own little way. There’s a limited amount available, so click here to grab yours, or read on for more info… 


What’s in the Festive Blend?



80%  Guatemala - Todos Santos. An organic Caturra, with baked apple notes and a slight zestiness - a fantastic coffee in its own right. A huge hit last year - we’re really glad to have it back in this year’s Festive Blend.



20% Uganda - Ibanda. From the Bugoye washing station - relatively close to Kisinga, home to one of 2020’s most popular coffees. This coffee, from the village of Ibanda, is a high altitude mixture of SL14 and SL28 varietals, along with some regional landraces. 
  


Together, our Festive Blend has got everything you’d want from this time of year - dried fruits and warming spices. The coffee equivalent of a mince pie!

Packaging - just for Christmas, not for life…



Over 110,000 tonnes of plastic packaging is thrown away in the UK each Christmas - the same as 3.3 million Emperor penguins… We have a duty to have as minimal an impact as possible, which is why the packaging for our Festive Blend is carbon-neutral and fully recyclable.

Last Postage Dates for Christmas 

You''ll have seen over the last few weeks that parcels all across the country are being delayed. Royal Mail is in the middle of a ''perfect storm'' with deliveries - the annual Christmas rush alongside staff shortages mean the backlog of parcels is proving to be a huge challenge. 

We''ve been making sure that all orders are being dispatched as quickly as possible. We''ve upgraded all deliveries to 1st Class postage, which does seem to have helped in many cases. 

Royal Mail has suggested that next Monday (21st) is the last day for 1st Class orders to be delivered before Christmas. However, we''d suggest getting your orders in as soon as you''re able - just to be on the safe side.

You can also have your order delivered by DPD, which will guarantee delivery in two working days - a great option for peace of mind! Just select this option at checkout.

The Last New Coffee Of 2020 | Finca La Divisa

Candido Criollo and his family own Finca La Divisa in Tolima, Colombia. This area is renowned for being one of the best climates for growing coffee in Colombia (if not the world)! This particular lot has tasting notes of caramel, blackberry and has a jammy body, typical of this region.

What''s truly special about this lot is just how much we know about it. As part of our mission to be as transparent as possible, this is how we''d like all of our coffees to be. 

To name just a few examples, we know that the coffee comes from a total of 11,900 trees over a 4-hectare farm; 91% of the coffee cherries picked here were perfectly red and ripe (a very high percentage as far as coffee production is concerned), and the coffee was fermented for 48 hours at 22 degrees celsius. All of this is important because it shows to us that real care and attention is being given to make this coffee as well-processed as possible.

Also, by working with John and Claudia of The Green Collection to source the coffee, we know that Candido and his family are being directly paid the premiums they deserve. All in all, this is more than just a great tasting coffee, and we''re really pleased to be ending 2020 in such a positive way. 

A Huge Thank You | GGRF Update

Back in September, we released a very special coffee - the proceeds of which we pledged to donate to the Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF) in Ethiopia. There are now just a few kilos left of this coffee, produced by Mustefa Abakeno. With tasting notes of apricot and lemon curd, you can find it here if you’ve not tried it yet!

You can still support GGRF in future, simply by drinking delicious coffee! Even when ‘Trailblazing Zelalem’ runs out, the sales of Rocko Mountain have contributed to the organisation for several years now.

GGRF is a non-profit organisation which uses running and education to empower young women and their communities in Ethiopia. This coffee, ‘Trailblazing Zelalem’ was our way to contribute to the education of one young woman, Zelalem Dawit. 

Zelalem aspires to be an engineer, and this scholarship will allow her to receive the education she needs, whilst also allowing her to thrive as an athlete.

We''re somehow at that point in the year already where the sun starts to set a little sooner, the air starts to feel a bit chillier, and we put our sunglasses away for hibernation...

Coffees change with the seasons too, and every so often you find a crop that perfectly matches how we are feeling here at home. We''ve got our hands on a single bag from Jaen province in Peru - you''re the first to hear about it!

This coffee is like autumn in a cup. It''s naturally processed, so it''s already starting with a lot of character and complexity. Typical of Peruvian coffees, there''s sweet cranberry notes, warmth reminiscent of cocoa, and a velvety body to bring it all together. 

There''s only enough coffee for us to roast another 6 batches of this, so it won''t be with us for long at all!

What''s so special about these coffees?

There are two coffees in the roastery at the moment that we want to draw extra attention to. 

From Honduras, we have a small lot from Vidal Hernandez, whose farm is situated in Corquin, Copan - typically home to some of Honduras'' best coffees. It''s really interesting, with initial hits of raspberry, followed by the complexity of sweet red pepper. 

If African coffees are more your thing, Biftu Gudina will hit the spot. With tangy lime and gooseberry notes, this 88 cup scoring coffee is one of our favourites to drink right now. 

So why are these two clean, washed, organic coffees both available for just £7.25 a bag? We want to do our bit to support the coffee industry in any way we can - we know that these two lots deserve a good home.

While we normally buy coffees from the most recent harvests, there are some bags that haven''t been snapped up from last year. With the world coming to a near standstill this year, the coffee industry has been dealt a particularly heavy blow. Home Brewing Heroes

Being at home is tough, but we’ve got plans to make the most of January (and beyond)! Think new origins, limited editions and plenty more great stuff… We''ve gotten rather good at operating safely in the roastery after last year''s challenges. The roaster is on, and we''re sending out coffee as normal (with free delivery over £15)!

We’re starting as we mean to go on with the return of Bwenda from Rwanda. It’s a fruit-forward treat, with raspberry and vanilla notes, and all the funkiness you need to get you through the next few weeks. Find it here.

We first showcased coffee from Bwenda washing station last year, when it had just been established by Bernard Uwitije. Since then, the premiums you’ve paid have gone towards extensions to the washing station, and improved processing. That’s what it’s all about - being able to give back to producers and their communities in a way that makes a difference.

Over the rest of the month, we’ve got more exciting arrivals, including the return of the super-popular Midnight Harvest! Keep an eye out, and be the first to get your hands on some when it’s ready…

First Things First

We''d like to thank you for all of your support this year. It''s been an absolutely wild ride, and it''s no overstatement to say we couldn''t have done it without you. We''ll be turning off the roaster today for a well-deserved break, before coming back in full force on 4th January. Between 29th-31st December there''ll still be a couple of us around, so any orders you place now will still be sent out before the New Year! 

We wanted to take a moment to look back at what 2020 has been like for us, and look towards the future for what already promises to be an exciting year.

Nightingale:

There''s been one eclipsing topic this year. We came up against our fair share of challenges in navigating the pandemic, but we''re lucky to be here today doing the jobs we love - providing you with delicious sustainably sourced coffee.

In March, we pledged to give free coffee to NHS staff, and provided enough coffee for over 10,000 cups to frontline workers. The Nightingale Coffee project was our contribution to local NHS services, but roasters all across the country did their bit to provide caffeine when it was needed the most. In the midst of what''s been a rubbish year for all, we''re glad to be a part of this coffee community. 

Environment:

2020 has given us all the opportunity to reflect on what''s really important. For us, a major focus has been on the environment. Our changes in how we work and our bag recycling scheme are just the start - we''re looking forward to some major developments that will allow us to operate as responsibly and sustainably as we can. 

Limited Editions:

When it comes to coffees, we''ve done things a little differently this year. From limited editions like the Cup Of Excellence lot from Elvis Tineo Rafael, to the super-popular Midnight Harvest - we''ve loved sourcing and roasting these extra special coffees for you.

Keep an eye out for more of the same in 2021, as we look to brand new origins, microlots and more!
