On Bear Ridge by Ed Thomas

�One minute we had customers, the next minute there was no-one.�

Today we've released the first image for On Bear Ridge and announced a special VR project to coincide with the run.

On Bear Ridge is a semi-autobiographical story about the places we leave behind, the indelible marks they make on us, and the unreliable memories we hold onto.

Co-directed by Royal Court Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone and Ed Thomas. The cast includes Rakie Ayola (Strange Fruit, Bush Theatre), Jason Hughes (Violence and Son, Royal Court), Rhys Ifans (Exit the King, National Theatre) and Sion Daniel Young (Jellyfish, National Theatre).

Throughout the run of On Bear Ridge, visitors to the Royal Court will have the chance to immerse themselves in the landscape of the play through a VR experience filmed on Penwyllt in the upper Swansea Valley, close to Thomas� childhood home.

Renowned playwright Caryl Churchill (Top Girls, Escaped Alone, A Number, Far Away) returns to the Royal Court this autumn with Glass. Kill. Bluebeard. Imp., four new short plays directed by James Macdonald (One For Sorrow, Escaped Alone, The Children).

The plays will have set design by Evening Standard Theatre Award winner Miriam Buether, costume design by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting by Jack Knowles and sound by Christopher Shutt.

We have announced the cast for seven methods of killing kylie jenner, the debut play by Jasmine Lee-Jones, directed by Milli Bhatia.

Tia Bannon (The Winter's Tale, Pericles at the Globe) and Danielle Vitalis (Primetime at the Royal Court, Attack the Block) play Kara and Cleo in this provocative world premiere.

�112 Million People. That�s how many people follow her on Instagram � and counting� As if she�s like a prophet. Or a material messiah or something��

Holed up in her bedroom Cleo�s ignored 22 calls from Kara and has cut off contact with the rest of the world. It doesn�t mean that she�s been silent though � she�s got a lot to say. On the internet, actions don�t always speak louder than words�

Reviews are in for Total Immediate Collective Imminent Terrestrial Salvation, a new play by Tim Crouch, which premiered at Edinburgh International Festival.

The play is presented through stage action and illustrated text, and 'plays with expectations and challenges the traditional structure of the scripted play' (The List).

Tickets for the Edinburgh run have sold out, but you still have a chance to experience this 'apocalyptic book club' (Time Out) when it comes to the Royal Court this September for a limited three week run.

A History of Water in the Middle East

Today we announced the cast for A History of Water in the Middle East which will have its world premiere at the Royal Court this October.

Written and performed by Sabrina Mahfouz, winner of Sky Arts Academy Award for Poetry as well as Editor of The Things I Would Tell You: British Muslim Women Write (2017 Guardian Book of the Year) and the forthcoming Smashing It: Working Class Artists on Life, Art and Making It Happen.

She will be joined by David Mumeni (Lela & Co, Royal Court and Fresh Meat, Channel 4), Laura Hanna (Give a Man a Bible, Bunker), and composer and performer Kareem Samara.

Directed by Stef O�Driscoll, the production journeys across twelve different countries using theatre, poetry and music to share stories of women across the region. From the British Imperialist ownership of natural resources, to the environmental urgency of the present, water has shaped lives, policies and fortunes � and it will shape all of our futures.

Rehearsals start in Wales next week for On Bear Ridge, a new play by Ed Thomas that explores the places we leave behind, the indelible marks they make on us, and the unreliable memories we hold onto.

Rakie Ayola (Breath, Boom, Ashes and Sand, Royal Court; Strange Fruit, Bush Theatre; Harry Potter & the Cursed Child), Jason Hughes (Violence & Son, Royal Court; The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?), Rhys Ifans (Thyesters, Royal Court; Exit the King, National Theatre; A Christmas Carol, The Old Vic) and Sion Daniel Young (Killology, Royal Court; Jellyfish, National Theatre; War Horse), have been cast in On Bear Ridge which opens in Jerwood Theatre Downstairs in October.

We have announced the cast for On Bear Ridge, our co-production with National Theatre Wales, written by Ed Thomas.

The cast are:

Jason Hughes (Violence and Son; The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?);

Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows); and

Sion Daniel Young (Killology; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

After a hundred years, the family butchers and grocers � a place for odds and ends, contraband goods, and the last petrol pump for 30 miles � is now silent.

But owners John Daniel (Rhys Ifans) and Noni (Rakie Ayola) are not leaving.

Outside in the dark, a figure is making their way towards them.

Ed Thomas is an award-winning writer for screen and theatre. He co-created the television drama Hinterland and his plays include House of America and Gas Station Angel. Royal Court Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone and Ed Thomas will co-direct On Bear Ridge.

A History of Water in the Middle East

Sabrina Mahfouz's new play A History of Water in the Middle East has just opened in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs.

Directed by Stef O�Driscoll, the play journeys across twelve different countries in the Middle East using theatre, poetry and music to share stories of women across the region.

Cast includes Laura Hanna, Sabrina Mahfouz and David Mumeni with live music performed by Kareem Samara.

�We got in a rehearsal room four weeks ago and I�ve written five new drafts � it�s one of the most immediate ways to comment on what�s going on in the world.�

On Tuesday we are hosting a reading of Harold Pinter's Mountain Language with Douglas Hodge, Colin Salmon, and Penelope Wilton for Barzani Charitable Foundation.

First performed in 1988, Harold Pinter�s Mountain Language, follows a group of prisoners in an unnamed country, trying to find a voice when their native language has been banned. Inspired by the long history of oppression the Kurds suffered under Turkish rule, the play blends the absurdism and realism found in Pinter�s earlier plays.

To highlight the recent events on the Turkey-Syria border, in particular the vulnerability of the Kurdish community in the region, Douglas Hodge will direct and perform in this one-off fundraising play-reading.

All proceeds from this short play-reading will go to the Barzani Charitable Foundation to support their humanitarian work with displaced peoples and refugees in the Kurdish regions.

Miriam has previously written for Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Royal Plymouth and the Royal Exchange, Manchester, and she was the 2018 Sister Pictures Writer in Residence. Miriam's play, Trip The Light Fantastic is currently available to listen on BBC Radio 4.

Our Spring/Summer 2020 season begins in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs in March with Shoe Lady by E.V. Crowe (The Sewing Group, Hero, Kin), a new play about Viv, a busy woman trying to stay afloat, whose day begins to spiral when she loses a shoe.

In April we have Rare Earth Mettle by Al Smith. Set on a salt flat in South America, an electric car magnate strives to halt climate change, a doctor has a radical plan to save the NHS, and a father questions whether he'll accept help at any cost. Meanwhile in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, Sami Ibrahim makes his Royal Court debut in April with his award-winning play two Palestinians go dogging, using humour to explore how the everyday becomes political and the political becomes everyday in a conflict zone.

In May, join us for the return of The Song Project, an intimate gig conceived by Chloe Lamford and Wende, created with Isobel Waller-Bridge and Imogen Knight. With words by E.V. Crowe, Sabrina Mahfouz, Somalia Seaton, Stef Smith and Debris Stevenson. Later in the month Alistair McDowall returns with The Glow, a play which begins mysteriously in a windowless asylum cell in 1863, where a woman is locked up with no memory of who she is, or how she arrived there. Meanwhile A Fight Against... by Pablo Manzi, one of Chile�s most significant new voices, plays in Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. Translated by William Gregory, this darkly comic odyssey across the Americas explores whether violence ever brings us closer together.

In June, Sarah Hanly makes her Royal Court debut with Purple Snowflakes and Titty Wanks, a play about teenager Sin�ad Murphy. She's popular with boys and doing so well in exams her teachers think she�s cheating; but she's also carrying a big secret.

In July, Aleshea Harris makes her Royal Court debut with Is God Is, an award-winning play that collides the ancient, the modern, the tragic, the spaghetti Western, hip-hop & Afropunk, following twin sisters on a mission to avenge their mother. Also in July, British Chinese writer/performer Jude Christian brings Nanjing to the Royal Court. This personal response to the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, tells a story about belonging anywhere and no where at once, and looks at how our lives are shaped by history.

Viv (Katherine Parkinson) has lost a shoe. They�re her work shoes, her weekend shoes, her only pair of shoes, and she doesn�t know what to do.

The curtains are falling, her foot is bleeding, and she�s starting to feel a little overwhelmed. But all will be well in the world once she finds that missing shoe.

BAFTA award-winning Katherine Parkinson (Home I'm Darling, National Theatre & West End; The IT Crowd, Channel 4) and Kayla Meikle (ear for eye, Royal Court; All My Sons, Old Vic) have been cast in the world premiere of Shoe Lady written by E.V. We were going to put it up on our website for a month from 27 March - World Theatre Day. We still are. Join us online at 5pm tomorrow, Thursday 15 Oct, for the final moments of Caretaker, Hester Chillingworth''s durational piece which has been live-streaming from the Royal Court Theatre since May.

"The last moment will be a micro piece of its own, rather than another short phrase we might blink and miss. Instead of an ending, this is the handing over of a baton, the end of a long shift, as life begins to stir in the Royal Court in preparation for Living Newspaper which is shortly to be occupying the building."

Over the last six months, Hester has written the text for Caretaker almost daily, at times responding to world news, and at others responding to how people are feeling during one of the most challenging periods for global mental health.

"I wanted Caretaker to be an offering which, while also hopefully being at times funny, fierce and simple, was also always urging us to practice self-care and to be gentle with each other... If you could say what you're really thinking, right now, to the people that need to hear it, what would you say?

It''s day three of the online festival My White Best Friend (and Other Letters Left Unsaid) co-curated by Rachel De-Lahay and director Milli Bhatia.

At 12noon every day, along sharing the line-up for that night, we''ll be releasing extra tickets for the evening''s performance. Half will be sold via the Royal Court Theatre website, and half will be available for free through the Black Ticket Project.

Produced by Tobi Kyeremateng with support from the Royal Court Theatre, the online festival includes a letter Rachel De-Lahay read each night alongside two letters by some of the most exciting voices in the UK.

Alongside the readings, there is music from DJ DLK every night.

A festival of online readings

If you could say what you're really thinking, right now, to the people that need to hear it, what would you say?

Writer Rachel De-Lahay and director Milli Bhatia have commissioned ten writers to pen letters that say the unsaid, for a new, online version of their festival My White Best Friend (and Other Letters Left Unsaid) from 13 July.

Produced by Tobi Kyeremateng with support from the Royal Court Theatre, the online festival will run over a week with a letter by Rachel De-Lahay read each night alongside two letters by some of the most exciting voices in the UK.

There are just ten days left to hear Shoe Lady by E.V. Crowe which was broadcast last month on BBC Radio 4 as part of the LOCKDOWN Theatre Festival.

Created by actor Bertie Carvel in response to the closure of theatres amid the coronavirus crisis, the festival broadcast four plays that had their scheduled runs cancelled or cut short by the pandemic.

As well as Shoe Lady, you can hear Rockets and Blue Lights by Winsome Pinnock (Royal Exchange, Manchester); Love Love Love by Mike Bartlett (Lyric, Hammersmith); and The Mikvah Project by Josh Azouz (Orange Tree Theatre).

Dear Billy,

Thank you all so much for being so kind in dealing with our postponements and also thank you for your extraordinary generosity. Where you were able, 69% of those of you who had booked have either given us a donation or accepted a credit to come and see the work in the future. I cannot tell you what your understanding and loyalty has meant and the huge difference this has made to our financial situation at this time. All power to you.

While our beautiful building is sitting empty in Sloane Square waiting for us to be able to go back we have been busy doing the thing we do best. Over recent weeks we've been exploring how we can best support writers and connect with our audiences during this time.

We have spent the time so far concentrating on our writers. We decided early on that we could not cancel any of our work, the plays are too precious. Each play we programme is the result of a long process of careful thought, research, personal passion and comes with great emotional cost from the writer as well as the nurturing, challenging, coaxing and support and ultimately belief that comes from us. So we will be putting on all the plays we have already programmed as and when we are able to get back into the theatre.

Our job in isolation is to find sustaining things we can offer writers at this time. We want to let them off the hook from having to articulate the moment we are living through and instead find ways of giving them space to think, opportunities to connect and hold them in the realm of imagination and possibility. Below you'll find more details of how we're working with writers to offer this.

We are creative at heart and while we didn't feel we should ask writers to be more productive and creative than anyone else at this time, we have observed that the world is sharing some fabulous home-made content with each other. With this in mind, we are launching Court at Home - a chance for us to stay connected and celebrate the lines from Royal Court plays that have stuck with us, that console us or that make us smile. It's something light and playful in strange, challenging times. Scroll down for details.

Our Audience

Whilst our work with writers carries on, our relationship with you our audience has been interrupted. So to keep us connected, and for something a bit lighter in these difficult times, we're launching Court at Home - a DIY, digital celebration of Royal Court plays and you.

Writers have always asked us to see the world differently. They constantly surprise us in their ability to mix minutiae and epic. They can make the extraordinary ordinary and ordinary extraordinary. The painful funny and the funny painful.

For Court at Home we'd love to collaborate with you by asking you to think about a line from a Royal Court play that has stuck with you and ''stage'' it in your home, showing an activity that is now part of your new normal, and sharing how we are all existing in this new world.

All you'll need is a phone with a camera, each tiny film should be no more than 25 seconds.

Keeping Playwrights Connected

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing writing exercises by playwrights who have previously led our writers groups, starting today with Leo Butler. Click here to read more.

We're pairing up 100 writers to have a series of online conversations together, creating intimate exchanges between one playwright in lockdown to another - whether they are peers, senior and brand new writers, within or beyond the UK.

Our next long-form group has started online, led by E.V. Crowe whose wonderful play Shoe Lady had its run cut short. We are using this opportunity to bring together UK writers with writers from China, the US, Singapore and Peru, forming a far flung community that will meet each week over the coming months.

Planned workshops with International Writers'' Groups have also moved online. Projects in Japan and Palestine will now take place virtually.

We'll soon share news about our next Introductory Writers'' Groups and how you can apply.

This week in theatre

Our doors may be closed but the theatre community is working collaboratively to ensure our survival.

Yesterday our Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone and Robert Hastie, Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, were on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme advocating for the cultural and economic value of the theatre sector and outlining the unique challenges we face.

Here's a flavour of their conversation:

"British theatre contributes nearly ?112 billion to the UK economy as part of the creative industries, and we are a huge part of the national identity, part of what makes Britain, Britain"
"Theatre is so disproportionately affected because we can''t resume the business, our hugely successful business - I mean 34 million people go to the theatre every year in Britain which is twice the amount of people who go to the Premier League. If we can get support to cover this bridge we can come back, absolutely, flying."

70% of the 290 000 people who work in theatre and performance in the UK are freelance or self-employed. It is the writers, designers, actors, lighting designers, sound designers and all our amazing stage management and technical teams that are hit most by this crisis. The more experienced have lost months and months of work overnight and for those taking the first tentative steps into an already precarious profession this situation is catastrophic. Alongside trying to save the organisations that employ them we must also advocate and find ways to give them security. We will highlight their need and steps to support them over subsequent communications.

Rachel joined the Royal Court's Unheard Voices Programme in 2009, and out of that group came her debut play The Westbridge, which won the 2012 Writers Guild Award for best play as well as coming joint first for the 2011 Alfred Fagon Award. Rachel is a celebrated writer for stage and screen, and most recently has written for The Eddy (Netflix) with Jack Thorne.

Living Newspaper Edition 2

As we approach the end of one of the strangest years, we''re pleased we have one final new production to share with you - Edition 2 of Living Newspaper is hot off the press and available to watch until Sunday.

It includes new work by 14 writers, each responding to the moment we are in and sharing the stories that matter to them. Scripts were filed on Tuesday, a company of 13 actors rehearsed on Wednesday, and on Thursday we filmed it.

From a front page grime track with the headlines, to a satirical live cartoon about our impending isolation, to an agony aunt giving interesting advice on what to do when it''s illegal to see your boyfriend indoors; this edition is an immediate response to the world we find ourselves in. Tickets start at ?10 with an option to donate to Support the Court. Everyone will get the same view regardless of what ticket price they pay, however, we'd ask if possible that you consider paying what you usually would for a night at the theatre.

"What form can something take without water?"

Following it''s success in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs last year, we''re delighted to be able to share the audio play of A History of Water in the Middle East by Sabrina Mahfouz directed by Stef O'Driscoll until 31 January.

A History of Water in the Middle East is available to stream on our website, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. Audiences can listen to the content for free but are invited to pay-what-you-can with all proceeds going directly to the brilliant team who made the work including all the freelance artists.

We're currently working on making the published playtext available for free on request for D/deaf and hard of hearing audiences and aim to share this publicly in Jan 2021.

Invisible Summer returns

Invisible Summer is a multimedia play for your inbox from from Eve Leigh, Rachel Bagshaw and the artists who created Midnight Movie which premiered at the Royal Court in November 2019.

Part late night scary story, part call to arms, it's about how to get through the pandemic.

Invisible Summer is designed so that each audience member, depending on their mode of communication, receives a different theatrical experience. It creatively combines written text, Spoken English, BSL, captioning, and audio description. It has been designed with audiences with visual impairments, and D/deaf audiences who use BSL, and D/deaf audiences who read captions, in mind.

Returning for a second release after a first run in November 2020, sign up for free before 11 January and Invisible Summer will be delivered to your inbox, piece by piece, night by night. Some of the fun kind of fear, for the long dark nights to come.
