ENTER SALA AWARDS

Nominations are open until 30 June for the SALA Awards. This year the prize pool is $35,000+ across eight awards. There are two new awards including the City of Adelaide Incubator Award and the Unitcare Services Digital Media Award.

Register your SALA exhibition or event before 30 June to receive your registration number and nominate for the awards of your choice. See below for an overview of what''s on offer in SALA 2020 and check out the SALA website for more details.

SALA 2020 Awards

City of Adelaide Incubator Award

This award is provided to an artist at any stage of their career, working in any medium, whose work explores the experience of the City. The prize consists of $7,000 with the winner participating in one public program at the City Library before SALA Festival 2021, to share with the community what their creative practice is and how it has evolved as a result of the award.

Award closing date: 30 June 2020

Unitcare Services Digital Media Award

To recognise the unprecedented times the world faces in 2020 and the new future we are creating. This award seeks to encourage experimentation in new media and is for artists working in digital art including computer, moving image, virtual, interactive, sound, and internet platforms. Prize consists of $5,000 cash.

Award closing date: 30 June 2020

Credit Union SA School Awards

The Credit Union SA School Awards encourage South Australian schools to participate in SALA during August.
Primary and secondary schools registered for SALA 2020 will be automatically entered into the awards. Credit Union SA will present a prize of $2,500 per winning school and an additional $1,000 award for commended schools. The awards will be judged during SALA and the winners will be announced in September 2020.

Country Arts Breaking Ground Award

This award provides a visual artist residing in regional SA with $10,000 to develop work for a solo exhibition, held in the Adelaide CBD for SALA 2021. An additional $5,000 mentorship opportunity is provided to assist the recipient to achieve their professional goals.

City Rural Emerging Artist Award

This award is for artists in the early stages of their career with under five years professional experience.
Prize consists of $2,500 cash.

City of Unley Active Ageing Award

For artists over the age of 60 to celebrate the City of Unley's involvement with SALA and its commitment to promoting and supporting an active ageing approach.
Prize consists of $2,000 cash and an exhibition space in Unley for SALA 2021.

Award closing date: 30 June 2020

Don Dunstan Foundation Award

For artists whose work explores social justice themes which align with the objectives and priorities of the Don Dunstan Foundation. Prize is $1,000 cash.

Award closing date: 30 June 2020

City of Onkaparinga Contemporary Curators Award

For contemporary curators to foster and support curatorial practice within the City of Onkaparinga. The award is open to emergent or established curators.
Prize consists of $1000 & a supported opportunity to curate an exhibition at Sauerbier House during SALA 2021.

The SALA Festival is officially over and despite the challenges of 2020 over 8,000 artists participated in this state-wide celebration of the visual arts. This year has been a difficult one for the arts industry so we were heartened by the level of engagement this Festival. We passionately believe in investing in the careers of South Australia's artists and work to find new ways to help them flourish and succeed.

If you would like to help support SALA Festival to create paid opportunities for artists via talks, tours and residencies, then please donate to the SALA Public Fund. Donations above $2 are tax deductible and have a huge impact on the future of SALA and South Australia's visual artists.

SCHOOLS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The Schools Artist in Residence Program aims to place practicing SA visual artists in SA schools, giving students a chance to develop new skills and create work within their community to be proud of.

This year, six artists have been paired with six schools across the state to guide student ideas. To see what's been created, view the video above of artist Olivia White and students from Stuart High School, Whyalla. For more on the various projects, click the link below.

Although the Festival officially closed on 31 August, we encourage you to continue exploring the program as many online and physical exhibitions remain open in September and beyond.

ITHACA AT SAMSTAG

This October SALA''s feature artist, Kirsten Coleho''s new exhibition, Ithaca, opens at Samstag Museum. The exhibition will consist of an installation of porcelain vessels inspired by Homer''s classic poem, the Odyssey.

Kirsten is the recipient of the 2020 SA Living Artist Publication written by Wendy Walker. The Publication will be available from Samstag for the duration of the exhibition or from Wakefield Press.

ACE OPEN''S 2020 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN ARTIST SURVEY

If the future is to be worth anything: 2020 South Australian Artist Survey is opening soon at ACE Open. This major survey celebrates the breadth of art practice and critical perspectives emerging from South Australia's artistic communities.

Curated by Patrice Sharkey and Rayleen Forester and presented in association with SALA, this project will support ten artists/collectives based in South Australia to present ambitious new work commissions.

2020 FESTIVAL OFFICIALLY OPENS!

This year we welcomed the start of the 2020 SALA Festival with an intimate opening event held at the Art Gallery of South Australia. With help from our community media partner Channel 44, we live-streamed the reception which saw remarks from Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, CEO of SALA, Kate Moskwa and guest appearances from a handful of regional SALA participants. This week we launched the SALA Podcast, created to engage you even further with South Australian visual art. Episodes will range from interviews with artists, DIY walking tours and discussions about popular currents in contemporary art. In the first episode we chat to Yusuf Ali Hayat and explore what drives him to create, where his ideas come from and discuss the themes of his practice.

OPEN STUDIOS WEEKEND

SALA''s annual Open Studio Weekend is coming up this Saturday 8 and Sunday 9, August. The Open Studios Weekend allows audiences and artists a rare opportunity to connect and discuss art outside of the gallery environment. A special two days not to be missed - let your inquisitive mind run free!

As well as physical open studios there are a number of online open studios and virtual studio tours for you to explore. Search the SALA Program by filtering the listings by ''Open Studios''.

HITHER & YON VENUE AWARDS

This year we are excited to announce the Hither & Yon Venue Awards! These awards are for venues who have exceeded expectations in supporting artists exhibiting during SALA Festival 2020. Two winning venues will receive a prize consisting of $1,000 each.

To enter, nominees must upload statements and supporting images explaining how their venue has gone above and beyond this SALA Festival in supporting their exhibiting artists. Entries close Monday, 31 August and will be taken via the SALA registration portal.

Now that we are out of August and have had a chance to catch our breath, we can properly extend our sincere thanks to all educators who were involved with SALA Festival this year. We know that it''s no easy feat to host an exhibition even in an ordinary year, and are thrilled to have such determined and innovative leaders for our state''s future artists.

Supporting South Australian Artists

This year has been incredibly difficult for the arts industry, with artists amongst those most impacted in our community. We passionately believe in investing in the careers of South Australia's artists and have been working hard behind the scenes to find ways to help them to flourish and succeed in these difficult times.

2020 will see some changes to our festival program. To help support artists we have provided them with free registration and have been touched by the many artists who have donated to SALA to support our organisation.

You can join our community of artists by donating online here today.

SALA is adapting to a new festival landscape and 2020 will see new online programs and opportunities for audiences to connect with the work of South Australian artists.

We are excited by this new way of working as we respond to the greater demand for digital content that will reach beyond state borders and help to grow the interest in the work of South Australian artists.

We need your help to succeed by supporting our series of new SALA Podcasts. This series will share the stories of the artists we work with - what inspires them, what motivates them to make and the ideas they are exploring in their work. This new platform will create paid opportunities for SA artists to share their work with you, our audience.

Donate today to support SALA's podcast series
> $65 will cover hosting fees for two months
> $100 will cover the costs of production and editing for one episode
> $250 will pay an artist fee to share their story and practice
> $500 will help us pay for the recording equipment

DESIGN A FLOAT FOR NATIONAL PHARMACIES CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

The 2021 Float Design Competition held in partnership with the National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant is still accepting applications! The competition is open to all South Australian artists with the winning float being brought to life in time for the 2021 Christmas Pageant.

Entries close 30 November with the winner announced in December.

Got some burning questions about SALA 2020? We have compiled some of our frequently asked questions this year to help you feel confident about registering your SALA exhibition. See below for our questions and answers, including links to more in-depth videos and other resources.

WHAT ARE THE CHANGES TO SALA IN 2020?

In 2020, SALA has adapted to ensure that we can still celebrate the work of South Australian living artists safely. This year there will be no printed program, registrations are free, and the registration deadline has been pushed back until 31 August - the last day of the Festival.

SALA is accepting online AND physical exhibitions which comply with all current State Government restrictions. For more information about these changes watch our Q&A video or download the fact sheet.

WHO HOSTS THE ONLINE EXHIBITIONS?

SALA is comprised of independently organised exhibitions and events, and the SALA program directs audiences to where they can find them. Just as you would need to find a venue to host a physical exhibition, you need to find an online platform to host your exhibition.

WHEN DO REGISTRATIONS CLOSE?

We will continue to accept registrations from now until 31 August 2020. This is not a typo, however if you would like to nominate for a SALA Award then you will need to submit your registration and award nomination forms before Awards close on 30 June. We also recommend getting your registration submitted before the SALA Online Program goes live on 20 July.

WHICH PLATFORM WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR ONLINE EXHIBITIONS?

If you're wanting to put on an online exhibition but not sure which platform to use, think first about what you would like to present. If you're presenting a body of work through photographs you could build a website through Wix or create a virtual gallery using software like artsteps or Google Slides. If you want to make an artist talk you could upload a narrated PowerPoint slideshow to YouTube, or an audio recording to Soundcloud.

WHEN CAN I REGISTER A PHYSICAL EXHIBITION?

The best thing for you to do is to wait until your physical exhibition can be safely conducted within current restrictions, and then register your event. If you want to register an online version of your exhibition so that you can enter the SALA awards, you are welcome to also present the work physically if and when this is possible. Please communicate your intentions with SALA staff so that we are able to ensure the online program is as accurate as possible and the most people are able to view your event.

MY ONLINE EXHIBITION ISN''T FINISHED YET, WHEN CAN I SUBMIT THE REGISTRATION FORM?

If you wish to submit your registration before the exhibition is ready to be viewed, you have a few different options:

1) Wait until your online exhibition is completely ready and live before you submit the registration form.

2) Get your online exhibition as ready as possible, with the URL connected, and submit your registration. You will then need to ensure that it is ready for viewing by 20 July when the SALA program is launched.

3) Create a placeholder message on your webpage and then submit your registration. You will have until your nominated start date to privately construct your exhibition and publish it.

We are adding new exhibitions and events to the SALA Festival Program throughout August. This allows businesses and artists flexibility to join the SALA Festival line up in this ever-changing climate. Registrations are open until the end of the Festival. There's still time to support South Australian artists

This year has been incredibly difficult for the arts industry, with artists amongst those most impacted in our community. We passionately believe in investing in the careers of South Australia's emerging artists and have been working hard behind the scenes to find ways to help them to succeed and flourish in these difficult times.

SALA is adapting to a new festival landscape and 2020 will see new online programs and opportunities for audiences to connect with the work of South Australian artists.

If you would like to support SA artists before the end of this financial year, donate before midnight, Tuesday 30 June and help create paid opportunities for artists to share their work with a wider audience.

STILL TIME TO REGISTER

SALA is accepting new registrations throughout the Festival this year - right up until 31 August - to allow for those affected by changing restrictions the flexibility to participate in SALA. You can participate with an online event or a physical event as long as it complies with current State Government restrictions.

SALA 2020 PARTICIPATION RESOURCE

SALA PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS DISTRIBUTION

SALA will soon be sending out posters and stickers to registered physical venues. To have your promotional materials delivered, please ensure that you register your exhibition before midnight, 19 July. If you are unable to register your exhibition by this date, you will be able to collect your promotional materials from the SALA office.

For online exhibitions we will make a digital copy of our venue sticker available for download before the Festival. Feel free to use this sticker where your SALA online event can be found.

UNSUBMITTED REGISTRATIONS

If you believe that you have submitted your registration but have not received your confirmation email, it is possible that you did not complete the registration process. In order to properly submit the form, you need to select a payment option or ''register without payment'' if you are not making a donation.

If you have any issues with registration you can follow along with the registration demonstration video for a step-by-step guide on how to register or feel free to contact SALA staff via email or phone on 7077 0011.
