To an endurance athlete, December may be one of the most important times of the year. The absence of available races means there is little chance for a PR, and long training sessions have usually wound down to maintenance mode. When he toes the line at the Boston Marathon this spring, Brian Hackenburg will have raced more than 100 times to promote firefighter fitness.

As a 22-year veteran of the Perkins Twp. Fire Department, Brian relies on an active lifestyle to stay prepared for the physical, mental and emotional demands of being on duty. As a result, the 43-year-old father is known throughout the Ohio community for his commitment to staying fit. He regularly appears in local races of all distances, from 5K’s to marathons, sometimes in full firefighter gear, which can add an extra 50 pounds to his frame.

It’s a far cry from where he started. Nearly 10 years ago, Brian was 50 pounds overweight and suffered the results of an unhealthy lifestyle, which left him at risk for heart disease and inhibited his performance on the front lines.

Getting in enough training these days takes some ingenuity, but it can still be done. 

In the current environment, a "normal" training calendar is nearly impossible while gyms, tennis courts and pools are temporarily closed. Just as running in sub-freezing temperatures takes a certain kind of toughness, running in the heat requires extra mental and physical stamina. It also requires a different approach to training and nutrition.

Generally speaking, there are two kinds of hot: dry hot, in which humidity levels are at or below 40 percent, and humid hot, which includes everything else. Depending on the moisture level in the air, your body will respond differently to the heat. You need to account for this change, especially if you have a summer race planned, so that you can create a nutrition and pacing plan to perform optimally.

Summer is upon us, and along with it, tough conditions for exercising in the heat. To help ward off the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, as well as maximize your overall workout, safety is paramount when heading outdoors.

But a change in plans does not mean your workouts should be any less effective. Indoor training, particularly indoor cycling, has been growing in popularity due to apps like Zwift and newer hardware with greater options for feedback and quantitative performance analysis.
