New standard in development to protect Canadian SMEs against cyberattacks

In its effort to protect Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from cyberattacks, the Standards Council of Canada has engaged CIO Strategy Council to develop a National Standard of Canada for the CyberSecure Canada certification program.

CSA Group and SCC deliver a new national standard for flood resilient communities

To help protect our communities and ensure they are resilient in the face of more frequent and intense flooding events, CSA Group, with the support of the Standards Council of Canada, has delivered a new National Standard of Canada (NSC) designed to help reduce the impact of those events on new communities.

Renewed standardization agreement reinforces collaboration between Canada and the European Union

The European Committee for Standardization and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization have renewed their joint cooperation agreement with SCC for another three years.

Leadership changes at Canada�s International Electrotechnical Commission national committee

A Canadian standards champion is retiring after years of involvement with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Jacques R�gis�s term as president of Canada�s national committee to IEC (CANC/IEC) is coming to an end, wrapping up an illustrious career in the standards world.

Canadian receives ISO Excellence Award

Congratulations to C. Douglas O�Brien who received the esteemed ISO Excellence Award for his major contributions to standardization. He was recognized for his outstanding dedication to standardization, having played an active role at ISO for over 40 years. Notably, he initiated the creation of the ISO technical committee on geographic information/geomatics (ISO/TC 211), and led its imagery working group as convenor. Under his leadership, this working group developed over ten ISO standards and technical specifications. While he is retiring from this convenorship position, he continues to be involved in this committee in a support role.

New Specification for Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Self-Balancing Scooters (Hoverboards)

Canadians re-elected to key leadership roles at IEC

Canadian leadership at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) ensures our electrotechnical industry has an influential voice in shaping the future of standards development and conformity assessment. SCC is proud to announce the re-election of Shawn Paulsen and Marty Cole to key roles within IEC. Their second terms will start on January 1, 2021 and end on December 31, 2023.

SCC reveals new Chairperson for ISO flagship committee on quality management

SCC is pleased to announce that Jeffrey Hunt, CEO of SHEA Global, is the new Chairperson of the ISO Technical Committee (TC) responsible for developing the ISO 9000 Quality Management series of standards. ISO/TC 176 Quality management and quality assurance is one of ISO's high-profile committees.

SCC and CEA enter partnership to strengthen standardization in the electricity sector

SCC/CCN and the Canadian Electricity Association/Association canadienne de l''electricite

SCC and the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) have signed a partnership agreement to enhance the competitiveness of Canada's electrical sector. This partnership creates new opportunities to promote efficient and effective strategies in standards development.

Increasing road safety with electronic logging devices

Together with our partners, SCC is working to improve road safety by reducing commercial driver fatigue. Starting in June 2021, federally regulated commercial truck and bus operators will be required to use third party certified electronic logging devices (ELDs). These devices will replace paper-based daily logbooks. Mandatory ELDs were recommended in the coroner's report into the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Protecting the planet

A healthy environment is an essential component to our overall well-being and economic prosperity and the urgency for action regarding climate change is widely felt. It is affecting every country around the world, disrupting national economies and affecting lives. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and weather events are becoming more extreme. Closer to home, the recent report on Canada's Changing Climate indicates that our country's climate is warming twice as fast as the global average. To ensure that the next generation has a chance for a healthy future, we need to accelerate our pace, and standardization can play a key role in the solution.

Terragon Environmental Technologies: Generating energy from waste

Terragon Environmental Technologies is a clean technology company that has developed a Micro Auto Gasification System which generates energy fueled by waste-such as plastics, paper, food, used oils and wood-that is converted into inert carbon products. When one size does not protect all: Understanding why gender matters for standardization

One hundred years - that is how long the World Economic Forum estimates it will take to achieve global gender equality. That number masks the variability between regions and countries. Western
Europe is expected to close the gap in 54 years while East Asia and the Pacific will need 163 years. North America2 is estimated to take 151 years, driven largely by the United States (the US is ranked 53rd on the global gender gap index, while Canada is ranked 19th).

Reach and impact: 2019-2020 annual report

2019-20 was the year many of our recent strategic efforts began to pay off in key ways. We extended our reach to new sectors, partners and stakeholders. We saw standardization deliver powerful and positive economic, social and environmental impacts for Canadians, directly supporting Canada's Innovation and Skills Plan, and free trade within our country.

SCC appoints CGSB as international secretariat for ISO flagship committee on quality management

SCC is proud to appoint the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) as the new secretariat of the ISO Technical Committee (TC) behind the world's most widely used family of standards. ISO/TC 176 Quality management and quality assurance(link is external) is responsible for developing the ISO 9000 Quality Management series of standards. Transition of the secretariat role from SCC to CGSB will be finalized by January 2021.

SCC reveals winners to represent Canada at the 2020 IEC Young Professionals Programme

We are thrilled to announce Canada's representatives for the 2020 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Young Professionals (YP) Programme. The winning representatives, Grace Abuhamad and Oshara Narangoda, were selected through a competition that was open to managers, engineers and technicians who are in their 20s to mid-30s, and are interested in active involvement with IEC-related activities.

The Standards Council of Canada and UL partner to help establish guidelines for the creation of an ISO Technical Committee on cannabis.

New vice-president appointed to the Canadian National Committee of the IEC

The Standards Council of Canada is delighted to announce that Shawn Paulsen, manager of conformity assessment with CSA Group, was recently appointed by the Canadian National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (CANC/IEC) as their new vice-president.

Annual public meeting

Breaking down trade barriers through accreditation - One test, one inspection, or one certification accepted everywhere

SCC is a respected national leader in accreditation. We have built our reputation on making it our job to ensure conformity assessment bodies and standards development organizations demonstrate technical competence, reliability and integrity against nationally and internationally recognized standards. Accreditation benefits food safety, medical testing, and many other industries that affect Canadians every day. Certification bodies worldwide seek SCC's accreditation as proof that their work is in line with the most current national and international standards and regulations.

Spotlight on diversity and inclusion - the 50/30 challenge

On December 10th, Minister Navdeep Bains officially launched the 50-30 Challenge, a voluntary initiative to promote diversity in corporate Canada. The goal of the Challenge is for organizations to reach 50% gender parity and 30% representation of under-represented groups in senior management and board positions over time.

SCC has a very exciting role to play in advancing this important work. ISED has engaged us to develop common language and definitions for monitoring and reporting on the 50 - 30 Challenge. As a first step, working with diversity and inclusion experts, SCC will develop a key terms and definitions Guidance Document. So far, almost 500 organizations have signed on to take the 50-30 Challenge. Stay tuned for more information on this important work.

A first accreditation for Qu?bec's public biomedical laboratories

The 15 biomedical laboratories that make up the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) cluster have just obtained their ISO 15819 accreditation in recognition of the quality of their testing and the competence of their personnel. This first accreditation for the Minist?re de la Sant? et des Services sociaux (MSSS) medical laboratories was issued by SCC on the recommendation of the Bureau de normalisation du Qu?bec (BNQ).

Three Canadians receive prestigious award in electrotechnical standardization

SCC is proud to announce that three Canadians,
Howard Sedding, Greg Lopinski and Paul Boissonneault, received the 1906 Award from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Blockchain brings new level of trust to agriculture

Farmers Edge and SCC unite to establish a framework for agricultural blockchain interoperability, setting the stage for improved global traceability standards. Farmers Edge, a global leader in digital agriculture, and SCC, the nation's leading voice on international standards and accreditation, announced a partnership to change the face of traceability in the global food market.

Protecting Canadian communities from natural disasters

SCC's Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Clean Tech team has released two new reports featuring practical, accessible tools and approaches for protecting Canadian communities from natural disasters.

The reports advance SCC's strategic priority to promote Canadian solutions to climate change, positioning the standardization system to protect the health and safety of Canadians in the face of a changing climate.

. SCC's new report with the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation offers a 'toolbox' to protect
lives and properties from flooding, Canada's costliest extreme weather challenge.

. SCC's new report with the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction is a first step toward
creating best practices for identifying how wildland/urban interface (WUI) fires can be
prevented or impacts reduced.

SCC has worked closely with Transport Canada and the UN International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure that Canada can continue to be a world leader in minimizing international air travel emissions. CORSIA provides an opportunity for verification bodies to get accredited and expand their customer base to airline operators.
