Celebrate the nightAs the days grow shorter, our access to the night sky creates an abundance of science opportunities – wrap up warmly and take advantage!

Matariki and maramatakaMatariki is the M?ori name for a cluster of stars that will appear in the dawn sky from 25 June onwards. It’s a great context to introduce the wealth of t?tai arorangi (M?ori astronomical knowledge) regarding planting, harvesting and ocean navigation.

Maramataka – the M?ori lunar calendar – marks the phases of the Moon. Learn about Moon phases and then chart its apparent movement across the sky.

The night sky and light pollution

Using our activity on constellations but finding it difficult to see the stars? Then join an online citizen science project. Loss of the Night is an app that helps you to find and log information on eight stars in your location. Globe at Night uses ongoing observations of the night skies – or photos of the night sky – for those with an early bedtime. Light pollution effects more than our evening views. Ahi Pepe MothNet explores the impacts on moth communities.

Shadows – darkness during the dayLight and dark, day and night are part of the New Zealand Curriculum from level 1. Use our new resources to learn about light and shadows. Explore light fundamentals with the activity Investigating shadows. Then explore how shadows change due to the movement of the Earth and Sun. These resources are written for NZC levels 1 and 2 but are useful at other levels, too.

Notice how radical your kitchen scale has become? Probably not � but there have been significant changes. The kilogram and other measures within the International Systems of Units (SI) have been redefined. We�ve revised our measurement resources � complete with new videos, stunning interactives, a timeline of measurement and new information about early M?ori measurement. Thanks to Measurement Standards Laboratory for their assistance!

Sounds amazing � physics concepts and science capabilities

Our new suite of physics content explores sound waves. The articles are superbly illustrated with diagrams to enhance student understanding and provide ample opportunities for practising the science capability �Interpret representations�. After learning the basics, use the investigations for hands-on learning. They support the �Gather and interpret data� capability and provide real-world experiences for using mathematical skills.

Science, technology, literacy and humour!

It�s that time of the year again! Forest & Bird�s Bird of the Year 2019 competition is open. Use this opportunity to engage students in some fun yet surreptitiously serious cross-curricular learning. The Hub has the perfect example to get things started � check out our Team Takah? video.

Vote takah? (aka the enigmatic, ENORMOUS, rainbow chicken!). Join Team Takah? now and let's get this iconic species crowned Bird of the Year for 2019. Vote here.

Challenge your students to put their science, technology and literacy skills to use to create a similar video. The Hub has lots of information on some of the lesser known birds: ducks and godwits, along with our well known species kerer?, k?k?, takah? and even the extinct moa! No time for video? Then use the storyboard from this activity to combine bird images, annotations and text to promote your bird of the year. Enjoy!

Bugs, bats, m?tauranga and free stuff!

The spring and summer terms are an ideal time to interact with the natural world. If you are looking for engaging pre-Christmas topics or planning for 2020 � check out what the Hub has to offer.

New content � native insects and native bats

There are more than 20,000 species of insects in New Zealand! And because this is Aotearoa � many are endemic and unusual. Delve into our new insect resources. We�ve collaborated with entomologists and used material from the New Zealand Entomological Society to create beautifully illustrated articles and interactives:

Aotearoa�s native bats also have unique characteristics. New Zealand bats � pekapeka and Conservation of our native bats � pekapeka are the foundations for great cross-curricular learning opportunities covering biology, physics, technology and some amusing content vocabulary.

Summer celebrations and good things to come

It�s been a memorable year for the Science Learning Hub team! We move into summer with some exciting collaborations.

Working with the Office of the Prime Minister�s Chief Science Advisor, we�ve just published Rethinking plastics. It includes the interactive timeline Plastics: innovations and impacts � an exploration of plastic technology, impacts and initiatives. Plastic is a wicked problem that offers a rich context for learning � our planning pathway will help you get started.

December brings our celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table to a close. You helped us chose the final element � gallium � in our year-long series. Sign in to the Hub and check out our collection of elemental articles and activities.

There is still time to enter our 2019 Christmas giveaway competition for a chance to win a fabulous prize package, just remember to use #ScienceLearningHub19.

Coming to you in 2020

The new year will bring new content! First up will be our collaboration with Waikato Regional Council. The new resources include videos, interactives and activities for use in learning about our precious waterways � including M?ori perspectives, the water cycle and stream monitoring.

With permission from the Ministry of Education, we are working to bring back to life some of the key Building Science Concepts booklets. Our vision is to update and refresh these hugely valuable resources onto an online format. The initial resources will feature light and shadows, and sound � the focus for Primary Science Week 2020.

Next up is Te Reo o Te Repo � the Voice of the Wetland. We are partnering with Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research to develop resources, host w?nanga for kura and communities and more!!

And for you rocket fans, our popular rocket launch interactive is being revamped and will be bigger and better.

Take advantage of the settled summer weather and take the science outside � plants, science fairs, connecting with our seas and more.

International Year of Plant Health � protecting plants, protecting life

The United Nations is using 2020 to raise awareness of plant protection. New Zealand native trees present a rich topic for cross-curricular learning. Our planning pathway groups resources into key science and teaching concepts. If you want to get out near the bush, we�ve had great feedback on this life-size leaf activity.

Economic development is also a component of IYPH 2020. Explore how and why New Zealand scientists are working to breed new apple varieties and create m?nuka plantations.

Wondering why the sports fields are browner and crunchier this year compared to last year? A soil moisture map will give you an answer.

Seaweek 2020 � Ko au te moana, ko te moana ko au

This year�s theme is Connecting with our seas � I am the sea, the sea is me.

There�s a reason Seaweek is a perennial favourite � it offers so many opportunities for classroom and community participation. Peruse Seaweek resources for a selection of unit plans and other support materials, curated by topic.

For a sea-related topic that combines physics and Earth science, check out our new content: recovery of the Kaik?ura coastline using drones to map the marine environment. These are part of a suite of resources developed for the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge.

Upcoming content

On 11 February it is International Day of Women and Girls in Science � how will you be celebrating? We will be publishing a new mini series introducing a selection of New Zealand women scientists working at the intersection of people and nature.

Seeing ourselves in science

Science identity - when students see themselves (and are recognised by others) as someone who understands, uses and does science - is an evolving component of science education. As educators, we can help students develop science identity by introducing them to 'influential others' within the community and by providing authentic science experiences.

Connecting with an influential community of scientists

Capitalise on our new content: In Her Nature: New Zealand women changing the way we connect with the world around us. We feature 11 New Zealand women working at the intersection of people and nature. The Hub has many other profiles - check them out on our Pinterest boards: NZ scientists on the Hub and Maori & Pasifika in STEM. Find out what motivates them in the article Working as a scientist.

Connecting with scientists has ideas on how to establish contacts with local scientists and ways to make the best use of the experience. You can also contact the Hub and we'll use our extensive social media outreach to try and find someone to help.

Don't forget your own role as an influential other! By regularly creating opportunities for students to engage with science in and outside your classroom, you are role modeling yourself in science to both your students and your peers.

Providing authentic science experiences

Participatory community and citizen science provide opportunities to engage with authentic science - via the collection and interpretation of data or through taking action locally. Check out some of the citizen science projects on offer, along with a helpful webinar and planning article.

The Hub features stories of school projects and the impacts they make on science learning and identity - Toko School discovered that the impacts also filter out to whanau and the wider community. Read through other Participatory Science Platform project stories and consider whether you can adapt a project to fit your own situation. Actions such as composting, monitoring exercise and designing insect houses are good places to start, for primary and secondary alike.

New climate change resources and free PLD that's all about insects!

Climate change and Aotearoa

The Hub has collaborated with the Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ to create a new suite of climate change resources. They use information from Our atmosphere and climate 2020 and have a strong focus on the nature of science and the science capabilities.

Videos feature New Zealand scientists, including climate expert James Renwick, who clearly explain the science, the issues and ideas for change.

The resources introduce key science concepts including:

climate change
greenhouse gases and energy
climate connections
weather and climate

The role of evidence in climate change research

Evidence is an overarching theme. Watch as New Zealand scientists explain how climate data is collected, interpreted and how we know it is accurate and robust.

Activities enable students to gain competence with literacy and numeracy components required to understand data and visual representations.

Find out how infographics present information and how to create them.
Identify the components of graphs and the purposes of their design.
Use long-term weather datasets from 30 sites across New Zealand to create and interpret graphs.

Cultural and social perspectives

The resources explore climate change from a te ao Maori perspective - how tohu and matauranga inform our understanding of climate and the effects climate change pose to Maori identity and wellbeing.

Use concept cartoons to challenge alternative conceptions about climate change, to recognise concerns students may be feeling and to encourage people to take action.

Insects offer lots of opportunities to make use of students' natural curiosity and to grow their science knowledge and capabilities. Insects are an ideal topic for outdoor learning in term 4. New updates of old favourites

We've been working behind the scenes to update some of our interactives. They make ideal discussion starters and are great as formative or summative assessments.

Rockets

The updated Rocket launch challenge interactive is modelled on Rocket Lab's Electron rocket. Take up the challenge to make the rocket go as high as possible and launch a payload 400 km above the ground. Explore physical world concepts of forces, mass and speed without having to invest US$6 million per launch!

Activity instructions help you get the most out of the interactive. There are multiple investigations to choose from, along with model answers and helpful commentary. If you prefer using the old Flash version of the interactive, never fear, it is still available.

New interactives

Other new look interactives enable you to print student answers and download the exercises. They include:

Skinks and geckos - similarities and difference Venn diagram - with supporting activity information
Tsunamis and surf waves - similarities and differences Venn diagram - with supporting activity information
Plant parts - graphic organiser - with supporting activity information.
Genetics: true or false? - graphic organiser - with supporting activity information
Light and sight: true or false? - graphic organiser - with supporting activity information
What makes up soil? - graphic organiser - with supporting activity information

We will continue to add more to the site, so keep an eye on the notification bell on the website for alerts.

Home Learning TV episodes

The Hub team has enjoyed creating content for the Home Learning TV channel. The Hub team contributed 57 scripts, totaling more than 170,000 words, featuring over 1,000 images and 250 video clips (we have been very busy!). In addition to script writing, we've created collections of related resources to support some of the 30-minute episodes. Many of the episodes are on TVNZ OnDemand and are available for you to use in your middle and upper primary/junior secondary classrooms. We have a list of episodes in this article along with other easy-to-use 'grab and go' resources.

Sound PLD webinar - Live

Our Sounds of Aotearoa webinar is now live with lots of supporting materials. Greta Dromgool and several New Zealand Association of Primary Science Educators (NZAPSE) explore fun, practical ways to learn about sound. Broaden your repertoire with the Science Learning Hub's sound topic. Use the filters to help you find what you need.

Good news - Primary Science Week has moved to 14-18 September. We will add more information to our site nearer the time.

Get involved in active science

Don't let winter limit your science options. There are so many options - both indoors and outside.

Citizen science

If you are keen to get outside, engage your students in authentic science practices and help scientists improve their knowledge of species abundance and distribution, check out The Great Kiwi Earthworm Survey and The Great Kereru Count. Both projects can be done at school, at home or as part of a camp or outing. There are plenty of indoor options, too. Peruse online photographs to spot Otago skinks or count Weddell seals. Visit our citizen science section for other projects and useful pedagogical tips.

Engaging students in citizen science can make science education relevant and purposeful. Projects can be used as short-term experiences to build enthusiasm or as part of larger units of learning - we have wrap-around resources to support both options.

Fresh water monitoring - resources and free PLD

Water quality is a hot topic in Aotearoa. Use the winter months to learn about key science concepts including water flows and catchments, water quality indicators and human impacts on water quality. Wai Maori explores values and connections between iwi, wai and awa. When the weather warms up, use the knowledge to take a hands-on look at stream health monitoring. Check out this short video to find out what it''s all about.

Join us for a free online webinar that will provide step-by-step instructions and protocols for fresh water monitoring. We are excited to feature Alex Daniel from the Waikato Regional Council and resources from Rivers and Us.

The Matariki star cluster has reappeared! Celebrate this special time of year with our new activity Naming the whetu in te kahui o Matariki. It uses the labelling interactive Te iwa o Matariki. Enjoy!

Learning through observation, exploration and play

Observation is an essential part of science and matauranga Maori. Through observation we collect data, which enables us to make sense of the natural world. Observational skills are central to Te Whariki and the New Zealand Curriculum. Learners are encouraged to investigate through exploration and play.

Active, authentic science

Take advantage of the warm weather to get outside for meaningful, hands-on and active learning through observation. The following activities are simple enough for very young learners and can be scaled up to extend content vocabulary and science concepts for older learners. Use the related content on each page to learn more about the science concepts that underpin the activities.

For other resources that encourage hands-on, active and outdoor learning, check out our learning from home articles for early childhood, lower primary, middle primary and upper primary. The ideas are great for at-home and at-school learning.

Observation through citizen science

Observation of the natural world is often a key aspect of both citizen science and online citizen science projects. We have two new case studies:

The Plastic Tide along with Dianne's sustainability focussed unit plan for middle primary.
Pest Free Tawa along with Carol's habitat and environmental change focussed unit plan for upper primary.

Don't forget that all of our citizen science projects and case studies include wrap-around resources to make planning, teaching and learning easier!
