Correspondence by Jens Lekman & Annika Norlin is out now on black vinyl. Available earlier this year as a Secretly Society exclusive on translucent yellow vinyl, the double LP now gets its wider release for the first time after previously only being available online.

After completing his previous projects Postcards (where he wrote 52 songs in 52 weeks) and Ghostwriting (where he offered his songwriting to tell other people''s stories), Jens Lekman came up with a new idea. He asked fellow Swedish songwriter Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide, S?kert!) to join him.

The idea was that throughout the year of 2018, the two of them would correspond through music. Each month, one of them would write a song and the next month, the other one would reply.

Before starting, they did some research on famous letter writing in literature. They were struck by how you usually have to be dead and declared a genius for your correspondence to be published. That's sad, they thought, and decided this would be great to do while they were still alive.

The rules were simple:

• One letter each month throughout the year - in total, six songs for Jens and six for Annika.
• Only one instrument could be used for each song. This was to help them focus on the songs/letters instead of the production.

As the project came to an end, Jens and Annika listened through the songs and felt pleased with the results. An epistolary novel in the form of twelve folksongs. Jens wrote string arrangements for half of the songs and brought in violinist Ellen Hjalmarsson and cellist Petra Lundin.

The songs are now available on vinyl.

Whole New Mess follows All Mirrors, Olsen's grand 2019 masterpiece (and a top 10 critically acclaimed record). At least nine of the eleven songs on Whole New Mess should sound familiar to anyone who has heard All Mirrors. "Lark," "Summer," "Chance"-they''re all here, at least in some skeletal form and with slightly different titles. But these are not the demos for All Mirrors. Instead, Whole New Mess is its own record with its own immovable mood. If the lavish orchestral arrangements and cinematic scope of All Mirrors are the sound of Olsen preparing her scars for the wider world to see, Whole New Mess is the sound of her first figuring out their shape, making sense for herself of these injuries.

We''re just over a week away from the physical release of Le Ren''s debut EP Morning & Melancholia on August 21, which comes out on limited white vinyl with a numbered jacket. It was released digitally on July 31, so you have plenty of time to listen and fall in love with it before the vinyl arrives.

We also spent some time recently with Lauren Spear - the 26-year-old Montreal-based musician who releases music as Le Ren - to talk about the new EP, her writing process, and her favorite tiny things from her latest music video. Read the interview below.

Introducing is a new series where we highlight our debut artists to help you get to know them a bit. For this issue we spoke with Le Ren to talk about the new EP and more.

How did you know when this collection of songs was "done"?

They looked me dead in the eyes and said "enough is enough."

Do you have a favorite place/environment to write or record?

For me, writing takes place wherever and whenever. I am constantly collecting words or thoughts or phrases and tucking them away until they are ready to see the light of day. I think when my aim is to complete a work, I like to go into full hermit crab mode and be home alone. The same goes for when I'm recording demos. 

If you weren''t focused on Le Ren, what would you be doing right now?

I used to work on a remote island at this camp for dogs. It's still my backup plan to end up there one day. 

What''s your favorite tiny thing from "The Day I Lose My Mind" video? 

Oof it's very hard to pick one thing because my heart beats SO loudly for each mini, but for some reason the cutting board sticks out. It has tiny little knife marks on it!! Hats off to director Zo? Robertson for all her hard work and incredible attention to detail. 

Which Secretly Canadian artist would you most like to interview/be interviewed by? 

Without a doubt, Yoko Ono. I feel so lucky to be on planet Earth at the same time as her and witness her ever expanding art practice. It would be the highest honour imaginable to take a walk around in her mind. 

Who is another artist or two that you would like to introduce us to?

My roommate introduced me to Tenci, whom I have fallen head over heels for. The album My Heart is An Open Field has been in heavy rotation in our household and I feel like every time we listen to it, I hear something new. The debut album Everything You Wanted by Mother Tongues is also something that has been on repeat! I can't wait to see them play it live. Lastly, Kaia Kater and her last two albums have rocked me. The track "Paradise Fell" off of Nine Pin is my favourite :~) 

Lastly, what are some picks from our store you''d recommend?

1. Marlon Williams - Make Way for Love  This record was on the soundtrack to my last breakup and made for great company. Thanks for coming along for the ride, Marlon! 
2. Okay Kaya - Watch This Liquid Pour Itself  This album is patient and thoughtful and it feels as though the songs are constantly undulating. 
3. serpentwithfeet - Apparition EP  This EP is only 8 minutes and 11 seconds and yet carries so much weight and depth. Josiah Wise's voice makes my heart hurt. 
4. Julie Doiron - Woke Myself Up  Julie is a legend!! Everything she touches turns to gold. Her record I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day is also perfect.

There are moments on Drunk Tank Pink where you almost have to reach for the sleeve to check this is the same band who made 2018's Songs Of Praise. Such is the jump shame have made from the riotous post-punk of their debut to the sprawling adventurism laid out in the bigger, bolder James Ford produced follow-up.

The genius of Drunk Tank Pink is how frontman Charlie Steen's lyrical themes dovetail with the music. Opener "Alphabet" dissects the premise of performance over a siren call of nervous, jerking guitars, its chorus thrown out like a beer bottle across a mosh pit. "Nigel Hitter", meanwhile, turns the mundanity of routine into something spectacular via a disjointed jigsaw of syncopated rhythms and broken-wristed punk funk. The result is an enormous expansion of shame's sonic arsenal.

Khruangbin''s popular 2018 Christmas Time Is Here 7" has been repressed on translucent red vinyl with updated cover art that shows us the right way to celebrate this year. At the close of a marathon year supporting their breakthrough album Con Todo El Mundo, Khruangbin returned in 2018 with an exciting addition - an update on Vince Guaraldi's timeless "Christmas Time Is Here."

"Growing up the three of us all had very different Christmases," says bassist Laura Lee. "But we recently discovered we all had the exact same favorite Christmas song. When we realized it, we sat down to play it and it came together instantly. In 15 minutes we had this recorded. It was like the best Christmas present ever."

With ambling sweetness and a fresh, beat-driven groove, Khruangbin have taken this oft-covered classic and made it wholly their own.

We''re excited to announce And Other Things by Routine as our newest Friends Of Dead Oceans release! Routine was formed by Chastity Belt's Annie Truscott and Jay Som's Melina Duterte, born from the disappointment of cancelled tours amid the pandemic. But like the phoenix rising from the ashes, Truscott and Duterte's collaborative project offers a glimpse of the creative possibilities that can emerge from a state of defeat.

In the universe that is Junglepussy, relationships are complicated, vegetables are magic, and an excellently delivered flex on an ex is one punchline away. 

Junglepussy's fourth album Jp4 follows 2018's Jp3, and is for her an exercise in grounding. Her debut album, 2014's Satisfaction Guaranteed, was an act of resistance-against broke and disloyal men, basic bitches, and texting. Its signature track "Bling Bling" propelled her into the pop culture zeitgeist appearing on HBO's Insecure, and crystalized the grit and wit she first revealed on 2012's daring single "Cream Team"-a track that found an early fan in Erykah Badu. Her second project, 2015's Pregnant With Success, maintained the quick-witted, tongue-in-cheek lyricism her cult following adored, and cemented her as a formidable force in New York rap. Three years later, Junglepussy returned with the sonically and thematically expanded Jp3, a softer, introspective, at times playful expression of a journey to self-love and healing. 

Out digitally October 23rd and on LP March 5, 2021, Jp4 is Junglepussy's stellar next phase. With contributions from vocalist Ian Isiah, rapper Gangsta Boo, and producers Dave Sitek and Nick Hook, Jp4 is Junglepussy ascended.

Lonnie Holley''s National Freedom gets its vinyl release on December 11 and is available for pre-order now. This 5-song collaboration between Holley and the late visionary producer Richard Swift is a tribute to urgent, raw, American art - from Howlin' Wolf to Captain Beefheart, from Cecil Taylor to Bo Diddley. The songs pulse with anger, hope, energy and a bit of swagger. You can hear sweat and tears through the speaker. Swift left us two years ago, but his spirit buzzes through these songs.

Holley was born into the Jim Crow South and suffered abuses in its wake. After the loss of his nieces to a house fire 40 years ago, Holley carved their grave markers out of sandstone. In the time since, his art - assemblages, sculpture and prints - have been shown in galleries the world over - including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, and The Smithsonian. He has released three albums of his singular music. The most recent album, MITH, was released by Jagjaguwar in 2018. He's performed his music across the globe and shared stages with artists like Daniel Lanois, Bill Callahan and Deerhunter.

During a West Coast tour with Deerhunter in late summer 2013, Holley was put in touch with Swift by a friend who suggested using a day off on tour to record at Swift's National Freedom Studio in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Now rather legendary, Swift was in a breakout moment as a producer having recently worked with artists like The Shins, Foxygen and Damien Jurado. Holley's essential debut album, Just Before Music, had come out the year prior. The cosmic connection between Holley and Swift was immediate. They put down five songs in their day together: all conjured in the studio and one-of-a-kind.

Silver Ladders is Mary Lattimore''s full-length follow-up to her acclaimed album Hundreds of Days. Since 2018, Lattimore has toured internationally, released collaborative albums with artists such as Meg Baird and Mac McCaughan, and shared a friends-based remix album featuring artists such as J?nsi and Julianna Barwick. At one of her festival appearances, Lattimore met Slowdive's Neil Halstead: "A friend introduced us because she knew how big of a fan I was and Neil and I had a little chat... The next day, I just thought maybe he''d be into producing my next record." He was. Lattimore traditionally records her albums holed up by herself, so the addition of Halstead's touches as a producer and collaborator leave a profound trace. "I flew on a little plane to Newquay in Cornwall where he lives with his lovely partner Ingrid and their baby. I didn''t know what his studio was like, he''d never recorded a harp, but somehow it really worked."

Moses Sumney''s long-awaited double album gr? is out now, and there''s plenty to read as you enjoy listening to the 20-track opus.

Following their extensive feature around the release of Part 1, Pitchfork greets the full release with an 8.6 rating and Best New Music designation, writing: "Where Aromanticism was intimate and sleek, gr? is rangy, sprawling, a riot of moods from lustful to angry to broken-hearted."

Today, Secretly record labels Dead Oceans, Jagjaguwar and Secretly Canadian announce Friends Of, a new project that extends the company's dedication to dynamic and innovative collaboration. Beginning with Pout - a new EP from Ryan Hemsworth - and continuing throughout the coming year, Friends Of is a series of special releases from an array of artists who may otherwise operate outside of the Secretly roster, but have now joined the group's creative community in ways uniquely suited to the current moment.

Le Ren, moniker of 26-year-old Montreal-based musician Lauren Spear, announces her debut EP, Morning & Melancholia, out July 31st on Secretly Canadian / Royal Mountain. A physical 12" will be released on August 21st on limited white vinyl with a numbered jacket.

Today, she presents a new single/video, "If I Had Wings," directed by Ali Vanderkruyk. It follows "Love Can't Be The Only Reason To Stay," celebrated by Uproxx as "a brief, delicate, and restful folk gem."

Two years ago, Spear's ex-boyfriend was killed in a car accident. Since then, she has been struggling with the weight of being the sole keeper of their shared memories and in response, translated a sliver of that experience into music. Morning & Melancholia is a mediation on mourning, memory and how to live with the ellipses you're forever left with in the wake of loss.

The way Le Ren is able to look tragedy directly in its eyes and never let her voice so much as quiver is owed to a few things. Raised on rural Bowen Island, British Columbia, the isolated lifestyle allows for a certain independent dedication to craft that is evident in her performances. With a folk and bluegrass study going back to her early teens, you can hear in Le Ren, the gorgeous folk formalism of Canadian heroes Kate and Anna McGarrigle, or The Holy Trinity of John Prine, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Their curious, deadpan and cosmic approach to life's most brutal swipes feed Le Ren's sensibilities, and her own lyrical couplets are as simply put as they are devastating. "Discussing songwriting feels the same as when someone asks about your tattoo," says Le Ren. "You're putting it out there, showing it in public right on your arm. Then, when someone asks you 'Hey, what's that tattoo mean?', you're shocked to have to explain it, as it is a choice that feels essential for a particular moment."

Le Ren's music is gut wrenching, but sure-footed. And you can almost hear the slight smile on one side of her mouth as she sings, the knowing smile of someone who knows real pain, knows there's surely more to come, but who also knows it doesn't erase life's humorous, enduring beauty.

The new Jason Molina album Eight Gates was just announced today and is available for pre-order now! The official release date is August 7, but Secretly Society members will get it first as their July release on an exclusive opaque blue vinyl color variant. Eight Gates is the last collection of solo studio recordings Molina made before he passed away in 2013. Recorded in London, some of the songs ("Whispered Away," "Thistle Blue") are fully-realized - dark, moody textures that call to mind his earlier work on The Lioness. Other songs ("She Says," "The Crossroads and The Emptiness") lay in a more unfinished state, acoustic takes that call to mind Molina's Let Me, Go Let Me Go, Let Me Go, and still tethered to Molina's humorous studio banter. You remember how young Molina was, and how weighty this art was for such a young man. On the closer, "The Crossroads and The Emptiness," Molina snaps at the engineer before tearing into a song in which he sings of his birthday (December 30), a palm reading and the great emptiness with which he always wrestled. It''s a perfect closer and, in many ways, the eighth gate incarnate: mythical, passable only in the mind, built for himself and partway imaginary but shared, thankfully, with us.

Fenne wrote BREACH during a period of self-enforced isolation pre-COVID, after a disjointed experience of touring Europe, followed by a month alone in Berlin. The album deals largely with "loneliness, and trying to work out the difference between being alone and being lonely." Although its subject matter is solitude, it sounds bigger and more intricate than anything Fenne previously released. She recorded with producer Brian Deck at Chicago's Narwhal Studios, with further work at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini who helped flesh out her sound with vast, rich guitars.

The title BREACH occurred to Fenne after deep conversations with her mum about her birth, during which she was breech, or upside down in the womb. The slippery double-sidedness of the word - which, spelled with an "A", means to "break through" - drew her in. "That feels like what I was doing in this record; I was breaking through a wall that I built for myself, keeping myself safe, and dealing with the downside of feeling lonely and alone. I realized that I am comfortable in myself, and I don''t need to fixate on relationships to make myself feel like I have something to talk about. I felt like I broke through a mental barrier in that respect." Even though it also carries implications of awkwardness, rebellion, and breakage, it''s a wide-reaching word, representing new beginnings and birth.

We are thrilled to share that Khruangbin, the Houston-based group comprised of bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson, have announced their new album, Mordechai, out June 26th on Dead Oceans, in association with Night Time Stories. Mordechai comes two years after the release of their beloved and acclaimed breakthrough, 2018's Con Todo El Mundo, and was preceded earlier this year by Texas Sun, the group's collaborative EP with Leon Bridges. Today, they present the vibrant, Felix Heyes & Josh R.R. King-directed video for Mordechai's lead single, "Time (You and I)".

Mordechai is a story of finding yourself in unexpected places. Travel weary and without a home after 24 itinerant months of travel and touring, Laura Lee was invited by a new friend to come hiking with his family. As they'd all made their way toward the distant promise of a waterfall, Lee had felt a dawning clarity about the importance of appreciating the journey, rather than rushing headlong toward the next destination.  When they reached the waterfall at last, Lee's friend urged her to jump, a leap she likens to a baptism. As she did, he screamed her name-her full name, the one she'd recently taken from her grandfather. In that instant, Laura Lee Ochoa was reborn. She emerged feeling liberated, grateful for what her friend had shown her. His name was Mordechai.

Musically, the band's ever-restless ear saw them pulling reference points from Pakistan, Korea, and West Africa, incorporating strains of Indian chanting boxes and Congolese syncopated guitar. But more than anything, Mordechai became a celebration of Houston, the eclectic city that had nurtured them, and a cultural nexus where you can check out country and zydeco, trap rap, or avant-garde opera on any given night. It is a snapshot taken along a larger journey-a moment all the more beautiful for its impermanence. And it's a memory to revisit again and again, speaking to us now more clearly than ever.
