If you were an SSA member at school, you are an SSA member for the rest of your life.?
We are happy to be presenting the Secular Student Alliance virtual conference - 4 days of amazing speakers?for the entire secular community.? While there is no substitute?for being at a conference together, I hope you join us on July 22-25.
A highlight of our speakers:
Founding members of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, Representatives Jared Huffman, from California's 2nd congressional district, and Jamie Raskin, from Maryland's 8th congressional district.
Rachel Laser, from Americans United Against the Separation of Church and State, discusses how the COVID-19 and racial justice crises in our country have highlighted two truths. First, that a system that privileges some and disadvantages others jeopardizes all of our freedom and well-being. Second, the Trump Administration and its religious extremist allies are turning religious freedom into religious privilege to advance the dangerous and harmful conservative political agenda of its religious extremist base. She shares how we can reclaim religious freedom once and for all.
Katherine Stewart:? For too long, the religious right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues such as abortion and anti-LGBT equality. Katherine reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and impose its vision on all of society. Stewart explains how the machinery of the movement works - and suggests ways to fight back.
Angela Saini:? In recent years, some in the scientific community have tried to revive discredited pseudoscientific justifications for sexism and racism, some of them straight out of the nineteenth century. Angela discusses her most recent book, Superior: The Return of Race Science, and examines the insidious ways unscientific notions about race persist in mainstream thinking.
Anthony Pinn:? Life in the United States is and has always been tied to race, and has always been marked by racism.? Anthony calls on humanists to understand and act in the world in light of the implications of race.? And he offers a set of "dos" and "don'ts" meant to help humanists get race right.
Nine-year-old, Elle Harris reads her soon-to-be-release book, Elle the Humanist, and speaks about her experiences that led to her writing it.
Other speakers also include Andrew Seidel, Alison Gill, Hemant Mehta, Sikivu Hutchinson, Christopher Cameron, Jeremiah Camara, and several SSA students and alumni.
Again, I hope to see you there.
-Kevin
