Hello from Salisbury,

In Thursday's email I broke down how to calculate the Click Through Rate of your ads (something that is a sign of your ad's good health no matter which advertising platform you use). But working out how many people who see your ad go on to click it isn't much use as a figure by itself. What really matters is how many people who click your ad go on to buy your book.

That brings us to number three in our list of five essential numbers for indie authors: your conversion rate.

As before, it's a simple formula.

Sales / Clicks = Conversion %

Let's use the same figures as when we worked out our Click Through Rate - 5,921 clicks from 3,732,593 impressions. From those clicks I made 1,003 sales. So in order to work out my conversion percentage, all I need to do is this:

1,003 / 5,921 = 0.17

That shows me that I have a very healthy conversion rate of about 17%, which means that out of every hundred people who clicked on my ad, seventeen people went on to buy my book. (My average conversion rate is around ten out of every hundred.) I do a lot of work on the blurb and book covers to make my Amazon product pages as compelling as possible in order to get the conversion percentage as high as I can.

So now you know how to work out the proportion of people who are seeing your ad, clicking on your ad, and ultimately buying the book you're advertising. But is that enough? Not without the second most important number an indie author needs to know - their ROI, also known as Return on Investment.
