South Shields Market will take place on:

• Fridays, 9.30am - 3.30pm (flea market)
• Saturdays, 9am - 4pm (traditional market)
• Wednesday 23 December, 9am - 3.30pm (additional market)

The additional market will include everything you'd expect from a traditional market but with the added bonus of Christmas items available to purchase. Browse a selection of stalls and pick up some bargains.

Garden waste collections restarting

The garden waste collection service will restart from Tuesday 12 May.

An additional collection date will be added at the end of the 2020 season to compensate for the service disruption this year, and a discounted rate will be offered for the 2021 season.

Recycling Village reopening

The Recycling Village at Middlefields will reopen on Monday 11 May and new restrictions will be in place. 

To support a managed approach, residents will be able to visit the Recycling Village only on certain days, using a vehicle number plate system.

May 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The Town Hall will be lit red, white and blue alongside special flags flying high.

We ask that residents take part in a two minute silence at 11am. While we are apart, we can still celebrate together at home with an indoor picnic, afternoon tea, drawings, paintings and window displays.

Are you a worker or employee who has been contacted by Test and Trace?

You may be entitled to a ?500 lump sum payment if you are employed or self-employed, on a low income, and are losing income because you''ve been asked to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace.

You may be able to get it if you meet all of these conditions:

• have been told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace
• are employed or self-employed
• get certain benefits
• cannot work from home and you will lose income because you cannot continue to work

If you''re at home, put used masks in your grey household bin.

Do not put them in your blue recycling bin. They cannot be recycled and you may contaminate other recyclables or place other people at risk.

If you''re out and about, put it in a sealed bag, then put the bag in a litter bin. If there is no litter bin, take it home.

Never discard face masks outdoors, on the ground, beach or any other public place.

South Shields Market reopens

From Thursday 3 December, all Council-owned libraries will be open with limited services.

This includes The Word, Hebburn Central, Cleadon Park and Jarrow Focus libraries.

You will be able to return and collect pre-ordered books, use a computer and browse selected shelves (with an appointment).

Childcare arrangements

You can continue to use early years and childcare settings, including childminders and providers offering before or after school clubs or other out-of-school settings for children. You can also continue to employ nannies, including those living outside of the region.

Children of parents who are separated can continue to move between households.

You can also continue to use ''informal'' care arrangements such as grandparents or other family members to provide care for children under 14 or for vulnerable adults.

Jarrow Hall's farm and reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village is now open Thursdays to Saturdays. To visit, you must book a time slot in advance. Once you have bought a day ticket, you can keep coming back for free throughout 2020.
