Did you know that leaves on the line are the rail equivalent of black ice on the roads?

When leaves fall on our tracks, they get crushed down into a layer of mulch by passing trains, making it harder for the trains to grip the track and brake when passing over them. This mulch also confuses our signals, which rely on the electric currents in the track to work out where our trains are.

Leaves on our lines mean that trains need to accelerate and brake more gently, to keep everyone safe. This can lead to increased journey times, but we do our best to minimise delays.

Upgrade to Gatwick Airport and changes to train services from May 2020

Gatwick Airport Railway Station is set for a major upgrade, with a new second concourse, wider platforms and new lifts and escalators to platform level.

The upgrade will create twice as much space for passengers, transform the station’s accessibility and help to reduce delays across the south east.
The upgrade will be delivered between May 2020 and 2023, with two years of intensive platform works between May 2020 and May 2022. While these platform works are underway, we’ll be introducing a dedicated timetable to keep you on the move as Gatwick Airport railway station is transformed.

Dear Adam,

Continuing our support for Britain during the Coronavirus crisis, we have a plan to start to increase rail services carefully, safely and sustainably.

This follows the updated advice published by Government.

From today, services will increase to the maximum possible in the current circumstances with some staff ill, shielding or self-isolating. This means the level will be roughly that of a typical Saturday, and we are working to gradually add more over time.

However, given the national requirement to maintain 2 metres distance between passengers wherever possible, the capacity to carry people on the network will be reduced to as little as 10 per cent of normal.

This means transport must operate very differently, and we need your help to keep everyone safe.

In line with new government advice, everyone who can work from home should continue to do so. Trains and other public transport should be avoided wherever possible to free up the limited space available to those who have no alternative way to travel.

If you must travel by train, please follow this guidance:

• Train times and frequency have changed, so check your journey before you travel.
• Avoid peak hours and travel during quieter times if you can – usually between 10am and 3pm and after 6pm.
• Don’t stand in a queue, buy your ticket online before you set off.
• Get a mobile ticket or a Smartcard or use Contactless where possible and avoid handling paper tickets if you can.
• You may be asked to wait to enter the station or use a one-way system, so leave plenty of time for your journey
• Maintain social distancing wherever possible at stations, platforms and on trains.
• Wear a face covering, this will help protect others.
• Wash your hands before and after your journey and carry hand sanitiser with you.

Continue to follow government health guidance and do not travel if you have symptoms of the virus. If you cough or sneeze, catch it, bin it, kill it.
In turn, we are doing everything we can to maintain the cleanliness of our services.

Please be considerate to our staff and follow their instructions. Everyone is doing their best in these difficult times.

Train services will change from Sunday 17 May

Train services are changing from Sunday 17 May. This means that services and train times will change and you’ll need to check before you travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk

The Government advice says that if you cannot work from home and have to travel for work, you should first consider alternatives to public transport. If you have to use public transport, the guidance for passengers on how to travel safely recommends:

• Keeping 2 metres apart from others wherever possible
• Wearing a face covering if you can
• Using contactless payment where possible
• Avoiding rush hour travel where feasible
• Washing or sanitising your hands before and after travel
• Following advice from staff and being considerate to others

To help maintain social distancing, you may be asked to queue to enter some larger, busier stations and we advise that you leave extra time for your journey.

Major works could affect your journey next summer

Dear Adam,

We wanted to let you know in advanced that some major engineering works are taking place in Summer 2021 for nine days.

Where and When?

Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd August 2021.
No trains will run on the Arun Valley line between Three Bridges and?Arundel, or on the Mole Valley line between Dorking and Horsham.

24th, 25th and 31st July to 1st August 2021.
For these two weekends, in addition to the nine-day closure, no trains will run on these lines.

Why?

These closures are planned so that Network Rail?can replace some of the old?track and signalling with modern and more reliable equipment.?This?will improve journeys on the two routes, as well as the wider region by reducing delays?and helping to make services more reliable.

Alternative Routes?

Longer distance rail services such as from Portsmouth & Southsea or Chichester that would normally use the Arun Valley?line?will be diverted via Hove and the Brighton Main Line?wherever possible. We will also run replacement buses during these works. More information will be available?in?spring 2021?to?help you?plan?your journeys?well?in advance. We will keep you updated as plans progress.

Network Rail is consulting on a proposed upgrade to the Brighton Main Line to provide more reliable, more frequent and faster services

Network Rail is proposing a major upgrade to the Brighton Main Line, to provide more reliable, more frequent and faster services and to provide the capacity needed for future growth.

The upgrade is the largest and most complex component of Network Rail’s longer-term proposals to upgrade the Brighton Main Line and forms part of the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme (CARS).

The upgrade would remove the most operationally challenging bottleneck on Britain’s railway network, located in the ‘Selhurst triangle’ the junctions north of East Croydon, and through East Croydon station.

The bottleneck causes knock-on delays across the network every time an incident occurs. It also means there is no capacity to run more trains to meet future passenger growth, which will lead to overcrowding in the years ahead unless action is taken.

To provide an opportunity for you to have your say on the proposals, Network Rail has launched a second phase of public consultation, to run until Sunday 20 September 2020.

Network Rail project specialists are available to answer your questions through a live chat facility and a dedicated consultation hotline, and, subject to the latest Government advice, aims to supplement this with public exhibitions in September.

We want to update you about our revised train timetable, how to process your request for a refund and our response in support of the Government''s approach to addressing Coronavirus. During this challenging time, we are doing everything we can to help ensure key workers and emergency services can travel, including those working early and late shifts.

Revised Timetables

We will be introducing a revised timetable from Monday 23 March on all routes. Services may be further impacted by staff sickness or staff following Public Health England guidance on self-isolation. Please do check for the latest information before you leave for the station.

From 23rd December our parking will be handled by APCOA

Dear Adam,

We wanted to let you know that APCOA Parking UK will be taking over the management of Southern station carparks from Saba. We are working to ensure that this is a smooth transition for you, if you use our carparks. Blue Badge, Season Ticket and Premier Parking permit holders have already been contacted to advise on next steps, but further information for all customers can be found here.

Please note that APCOA Parking permits can only be applied for from the 23rd December.

To help limit the spread of Covid-19 and for the safety of our customers and staff, we''re not accepting cash payments in our car parks. Please contact the APCOA customer service number if you have no other way to pay.

Download the APCOA Connect app in advance of the 23 December to prepare for the change. Customers who are already registered with Connect Cashless Parking do not need to re-register with APCOA Connect.
