Holiday Break at the Space Centre
December 26th - January 5th

Do you have a young space enthusiast in the family?�Come to the Space Centre over the Holiday Break for an out-of-this-world experience.

As part of daytime general admission we will be running special crafts and activities from December 26th � January 5th. Make your own constellation tea light candle holder and check out our Saturn 5 LEGO rocket on display.

We are extending our hours during the holidays and will be open daily from 10:00am � 5:00pm December 26th to January 5th.

Perihelion is�the moment when the Earth will be closest to the sun for all of 2020.�Astronomically this could be considered the start of the solar year, so we�re hosting a new year celebration!�

Family Day Fun and Superhero Science		Web Version

Family Day
February 17th from 10:00am - 5:00pm

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an astronaut? Stop by on Family Day and find out! Design your own mission patch, learn about space food and check out our robot arm demo.�

General admission includes a show in the Planetarium Star Theatre, a live demonstration in the GroundStation Canada Theatre and access to our Cosmic Courtyard exhibit space.

We are extending our hours for Family Day and will be open from 10:00am � 5:00pm.

Junior Astronaut Program Activities
February 17th from 10:00am - 5:00pm

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an astronaut? Join us on Family Day to take part in activities from the Canadian Space Agency�s Junior Astronaut Program.

Canada is going to the Moon! Our country is part of the NASA-led Lunar Gateway program, and the Junior Astronauts campaign will allow Canadian youth to test their skills and knowledge, understand how they can play a role in this important endeavour and get excited about space and science.

Schools and youth organizations across Canada will be taking part in these activities. On Family Day we will be offering three activities from the program as part of general admission.

Activities are designed for youth in�grades 6 to 9�and are focused on three streams � science and technology, fitness and nutrition, and communications and teamwork.�

Science of Superheroes: Family Night
February 29th from 6:30pm - 9:30pm

This Leap Day we will be celebrating Superheroes, their superhuman powers, and the planets they come from. Has your child ever wondered about the science behind Superheroes? Could gamma ray exposure give anyone super strength? Could super powers change if our heroes landed on different planets in our solar system? Is any of this really possible? We will explore these questions and more with kid-friendly science during our first family night of the new year. Be sure to come dressed as your favorite superhero!

Enjoy live demonstrations, a show in the Planetarium Star Theatre, make some fun superhero crafts and take a look at the night sky through our telescope (weather permitting).

This event is recommended for children 7 years and older.

Telescopes 101
Wednesday, July 15th

Curious about telescopes? Come by our observatory to learn about the different kinds of telescopes and how they work. If we have clear skies we'll do some daytime viewing and have a look at the Sun and Moon. You'll also learn how to use a planisphere (star chart) and we'll share some of our favourite stargazing apps that you can use at home.

REGISTRATION:
Select from one of four time slots (11:00am, 11:45am, 12:45pm or 1:30pm) to claim a spot. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 5 people to the event. This event is recommended ages 8+ .

VISITING US:
The safety of all visitors and staff is our priority. We want to welcome you in a safe and comfortable environment. We hope that you will enjoy being back at the Centre and reconnecting with our programs and activities. We ask that you review our ticketing and crowd management plan before the event (available for download here).

The webinar will incorporates big ideas and content from British Columbia's grade 10 science curriculum and is designed for 14-16 year olds.

Upcoming Events at the Space Centre		Web Version

Explore the Solar System Program
December 29th and 30th

Join us on December 29th or December 30th at the Space Centre to learn more about the size and scale of the solar system, and how scientists use light to study it.

During your 60 minute visit you will have 30 minutes to explore the exhibits in our Cosmic Courtyard Gallery and learn about a fun craft to make at home. The other 30 minutes will be spent in our Observatory with a tour of our ? metre Cassegrain telescope and a 15 minute presentation about the solar system.

This program is recommended for families with children ages 8+. Children must be accompanied by adults.

REGISTRATION:
Register for one of eight time slots (9:45am, 10:30am, 11:15am, 12pm, 12:45pm, 1:30pm, 2:15pm or 3:00pm). For each time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 4 people. We will be hosting 8 people per time slot to allow for adequate social distancing. Tickets are $10 (+ taxes and fees) per person.

Celebrating Perihelion - Live Stream
January 2nd at 7:00pm

Perihelion is the moment when the Earth will be the closest to the sun for all of 2021. This year it occurred at 5:50 am (PDT) on January 2. Astronomically this could be considered the start of the solar year, so we're hosting a family friendly new year live stream celebration!

Join us on Zoom and learn about the Earth's orbit and what Perihelion means. We will also be doing family friendly space trivia focused on events, discoveries and missions from 2020, and looking ahead to 2021. We will have some fabulous prizes for the winners. Don't miss out!

ZOOM LIVE STREAM
Tickets to register for the Zoom live stream are $8 and capacity is limited. Zoom registrants will have access to the chat and can ask questions during the presentation.

Our Moon - Home Learners Webinar

OSIRIS-REx Mission Touch and Go

OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) will attempt to collect a sample of asteroid Bennu on Tuesday, October 20th. This will be the first mission to carry samples from an asteroid back to Earth. Bennu contains material from the early solar system.

Join our education team for two live streams detailing the mission.

Learn what is going to happen during the mission as the spacecraft descends to the asteroid's surface for its "Touch-And-Go," or TAG maneuver. Find out where you can hear the live broadcast and watch real time animation footage.

Changes in the Sky - Home Learners Webinar
October 28th at 10:30 - 11:15am PDT

Did you know that the Earth is tilted? Ever wonder if animals are affected by this rotation or if other planets have seasons just like the Earth? Would Mars be a good place to take a snowboard on your next winter holiday?

During this 45-minute live Zoom webinar we will investigate the movement of the Sun, Earth and Moon as they dance around each other in the sky, and learn how their orbits and rotations affect the seasons.

The webinar will incorporate big ideas and content from British Columbia's grade 1 science curriculum and is designed for kids 5-8 years old.

Registration is required and capacity is limited, so don''t miss out!

Mars: The Robots Have Landed Workshop
October 31st

Interested in learning more about robots and how code is used to control their movements? In this introduction to computer coding workshop participants will use colour and block coding to direct tiny Ozobot robots through a series of Mars related challenges. We will also explore how the Perseverance Rover and Ingenuity Helicopter will be used in upcoming missions to Mars.

This program is recommended for children ages 7-12.

Feel free to come dressed as your favourite robot, martian or space traveller for Halloween!

REGISTRATION:
Select from one of four time slots (10:00am, 11:30am, 1:00pm or 2:30pm) to claim a spot for your group. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 4 people to the event. Please note all participants must wear a face mask to take part.

We will be hosting 6 groups during each time slot. Your time slot will include 30 minutes in our Cosmic Courtyard Gallery and one hour to complete the workshop.

Tickets are by donation, with a recommended value of $12 per person in each group.

Virtual Cosmic Nights: Earth Day
April 22nd from 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Join us for our first-ever virtual Cosmic Nights YouTube live stream and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with us. Our host Michael Unger will be joined by our astronomer Rachel Wang for a planetarium-style talk, and by guest lecturer Johanna Wagstaffe from the CBC.

Apollo astronauts captured images of our home planet that allowed us to see the Earth in its entirety for the first time. These captivating images inspired the birth the modern environmental movement in 1970, and now Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd.

Tune in during the live stream for a chance to ask questions and take part in the discussion. We'll also have a craft activity that you can take part in from the comfort of your own home. Grab your favourite beverage and we'll see you online!

New Dedicate a Star Program for #GivingTuesday		Web Version

December 1st is Giving Tuesday!

Giving Tuesday kicks off a month long celebration of generosity across Canada, as we take a moment to give what we can to our community. This year, when you give to the H.R. MacMIllan Space Centre Society through the Dedicate a Star program, you will give and receive something special and unique. Our long time program has just received a beautiful update, with a timeless and elegant new package design. It's a gift that encourages us to look up at the night sky, look up in hope, and of the awe and wonder that is our cosmos and the universe.

Giving this year is more important than ever. 2020 has been full of unexpected challenges in all aspects of our lives. In a time when we need to rely on our community and our loved ones for support and strength to overcome these challenges, we've had to stay farther apart. But, this year has also brought out some of the best in us, as we have shown our resilience, our strength of character, and our many acts of kindness.

You can dedicate a star as a gift, in memoriam, or to mark a special occasion. The Dedicate a Star package includes a constellation star map, information and mythology about the constellation where the star is found, a star certificate, and a limited edition holiday ornament. The ornament features the Cancer constellation, in honour of the Crab fountain found in front of the Space Centre. All star dedications are tax deductible.

All donations go directly to the Space Centre to support our vision to inspire experiences of wonder. where we dream of a world filled with inquisitive, open-minded individuals who embrace their differences, connected through discovery and united through a deeper sense of shared humanity.

Science of Superheroes: Family Night
February 29th from 6:30pm - 9:30pm

This Leap Day we will be celebrating Superheroes, their superhuman powers, and the planets they come from. Has your child ever wondered about the science behind Superheroes? Could gamma ray exposure give anyone super strength? Could super powers change if our heroes landed on different planets in our solar system? Is any of this really possible? We will explore these questions and more with kid-friendly science during our first family night of the new year.
Be sure to come dressed as your favorite superhero!

Enjoy live demonstrations, a show in the Planetarium Star Theatre, make some fun superhero crafts and take a look at the night sky through our telescope (weather permitting).

This event is recommended for children 7 years and older.

Virtual Cosmic Nights: Gassy Giants
August 19th at 7:00pm PDT

Cosmic Nights returns! Join the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre for another virtual astronomy event, for adults! This time we're exploring Gas Giants, the largest planets in our solar system. Our host Michael Unger will be joined by the Space Centre's astronomer Rachel Wang, along with Dr. Shawn Brooks from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Dr. Brooks is currently working on the Juno mission, and the upcoming Europa Clipper mission.

We will be live streaming on Zoom and YouTube for this event. Tickets to register for the Zoom live stream are $10 and capacity is limited. Zoom registrants will have access to the chat and can ask questions during the presentations. Tickets for the YouTube live stream are by donation.

Celebrating Solstice
June 20th

Summer solstice is a significant day for many cultures worldwide, and for the planet itself! Come celebrate with us outside and learn about solstice with this family-friendly summer kick-off.

In honour of the longest day of the year, renowned indigenous storytellers Dallas Yellowfly and Alysha Collie will present "How the Raven Stole the Sun" on our patio, we'll also have sun craft stations, and we'll do some sun gazing with our astronomer at the solar scope in the observatory.?

REGISTRATION:
Select from one of three time slots (10:00am, 11:45am or 2:30pm) to claim your spot. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 5 people to the event. We will be hosting 8 groups of 5 people during each time slot and it will take approximately 80 minutes to complete all three activities.

VISITING US:
The safety of all visitors and staff is our priority. We want to welcome you in a safe and comfortable environment. We hope that you will enjoy being back at the Centre and reconnecting with our programs and activities. We ask that you review our ticketing and crowd management plan before the event (available for download here).

Planet Mechanics Workshop for Kids
November 28th

Attention Moon Base Alpha - we are accepting new visitors! As space exploration continues to advance the next planned colony will be on the Moon. During this workshop participants will develop a better understanding of the relationship between the Earth, sun and Moon, including Moon phases and tides and of the challenges humans would face living in a lunar environment.
This program is recommended for children ages 6 - 11. Children must be accompanied by adults. Adults are encouraged to participate in the workshop with their children.

Your time slot will include 30 minutes in our Cosmic Courtyard Gallery and one hour to complete the workshop.

REGISTRATION:
Register your group for one of four time slots (10:00am, 11:30am, 1:30pm or 3:00pm). For each time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 4 people.

Extremophiles, Aliens and Exoplanets Workshop
September 19th

Are we alone? Does life exist on exoplanets beyond our solar system? Join us for a one hour workshop and find out whether extraterrestrial life could exist and where we might find it. We'll explore how scientists use extremophiles, organisms that thrive in extreme environments on Earth, to hypothesize what alien life might be like. Participants will also have the chance to create a clay model of their own alien.

REGISTRATION:
Select from one of three time slots (10:30am, 12:15am or 2:00pm) to claim a spot. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 4 people to the event.

We will be hosting 6 groups during each time slot and it will take approximately one hour to complete the workshop.

Tickets are by donation, with a recommended value of $10 per person in each group.

This program is recommended for children ages 8 - 10. Children must be accompanied by adults. Adults are encouraged to participate in the workshop with their children.

It has been a pleasure to see you and to welcome you online and onsite! We will continue to host onsite programs on select dates through August and September.

We are currently working through the details of re-opening our exhibits as part of our onsite program offerings. We look forward to adding our theatre spaces as we ease into our regularly scheduled programming later this fall.

Robots 101 Workshop
August 26th

How do scientist use computer coding to control robots like the Curiosity Rover on Mars? Join us for a one hour robot workshop and learn about the basics of computer coding. Work with Ozobots, friendly little robots you can command with the stroke of a pen, and also learn about some of the challenges scientists face when communicating with rovers far from Earth.

REGISTRATION:
Select from one of three time slots (10:30am, 12:15am or 2:00pm) to claim a spot. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 4 people to the event.

Join us for a live Q and A with guest astrophysicist Nathalie Ouellette, hosted by Program Coordinator Michael. Dr. Nathalie Nguyen-Quoc Ouellette is an observational astrophysicist based out of Montr?al, Canada. She is the Coordinator at the Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx) at the Universit? de Montr?al and the Canadian Outreach Scientist for the JWST working with the Canadian Space Agency.

Planet Mechanics Workshop for Kids
November 28th

Attention Moon Base Alpha - we are accepting new visitors! As space exploration continues to advance the next planned colony will be on the Moon. During this workshop participants will develop a better understanding of the relationship between the Earth, sun and Moon, including Moon phases and tides and of the challenges humans would face living in a lunar environment.
This program is recommended for children ages 6 - 11. Children must be accompanied by adults. Adults are encouraged to participate in the workshop with their children.

Your time slot will include 30 minutes in our Cosmic Courtyard Gallery and one hour to complete the workshop.

REGISTRATION:
Register your group for one of four time slots (10:00am, 11:30am, 1:30pm or 3:00pm). For each time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 4 people.

Tickets are by donation, with a recommended value of $12 per person in each group.

COVID-19 Closure			Web Version

The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is temporarily closed.

The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre will be temporarily closed to the public starting March 18, 2020. All programming will be cancelled as a preventative measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19 through our community.

While there have been no presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and public risk in Canada remains low, this decision has been made out of an abundance of caution, as we strive to be part of the local solution to this global situation.

For renters and groups who have booked with us we will contact you and will try our best to reschedule, once we reopen.

As a science-based organization ourselves, we encourage everyone to refer to science-based sources of information on this virus. For additional information on preventing the spread of COVID-19, please visit the Government of Canada‘s website. For more background information about COVID-19, please visit the B.C. Centre for Disease Control‘s website.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.

Special Event - SpaceX Webinar		Web Version

SpaceX Launch

Check out NASA''s live coverage of the launch of the SpaceX Demo-2 test flight, that will carry NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station.

The launch has been rescheduled for 3:22 p.m. EDT Saturday, May 30. The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and is scheduled to dock to the space station at 10:29 a.m. Sunday, May 31.

Join us for a rocket science workshop and learn what makes rockets fly. In this one hour outdoor program you will have a chance to design, build and launch your own pop-bottle rocket.

REGISTRATION:
Select from one of four time slots (10:45am, 11:45am, 1:15pm or 2:15pm) to claim a spot. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 5 people to the event. We will be hosting 3 groups during each time slot and it will take approximately one hour to complete the workshop.

This event is recommended ages 8+.

What is a Moon? - Daytime Programming
January 9th and 10th

Join us January 9th or 10th at the Space Centre and surf the solar system! Moons, also known as natural satellites, orbit planets and asteroids and come in many shapes, sizes and types. Learn about the more than 200 moons in our solar system in-person at the Space Centre.

During this 60-minute live webinar participants will have the opportunity to interact and ask questions. The webinar will incorporate big ideas and content from British Columbia's grade 4 science curriculum and is designed for 8-10 year olds.

Exploring Space - Live Stream for Guides and Scouts

Calling all Guides and Scouts! Join other Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and Guides virtually for a Zoom live stream with the team at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. Discover more about Canada's role in exploring our solar system and find out if you have what it takes to become an astronaut. You may even learn something that will help you earn a Space badge! During this 60-minute live webinar participants are encouraged to ask questions and participate during the presentation.
