Please Respond to RSE Consultation on Welsh Parents' Right of Withdrawal  -

1. Please respond to the short Welsh Government consultation, entitled 'Ensuring Access to the Full Curriculum', which you can access and fill in online here. NOTE: You DO NOT have to live in Wales in order to take part in this consultation online.  Please help to safeguard the rights of parents in Wales which will also have an impact elsewhere. Safe at School has produced a short briefing on the consultation and how best to respond which you can view and download here. The deadline for submissions is Thursday 28th November.  
2. (If you live in Wales) please order our postcards (shown here) to send to the Education Minister in Wales (via SPUC). Please email us to order cards to give to family, friends and to distribute at your place of worship (with the relevant permissions). These can still be distributed after the consultation has ended, but we would like as many as possible to be returned to HQ by end of December so we can present them to the Education Minister in the New Year.  

• Stop Spying on Parents Campaign - The Department for Education (DfE) is pursuing a sinister new tactic which uses Local Authorities in England to spy on parents who want to protect their primary school children from inappropriate teaching on Relationships Education. In a recently published document, the DfE is urging Local Authorities to brief schools on how to look out for any signs of parents disagreeing with teaching on LGBT relationships. Safe at School vows to stand by parents as Welsh Government removes rights

Safe at School has condemned the Welsh Government’s move to make Relationships and Sexuality Education a compulsory school subject in all schools in Wales. From 2021 parents in Wales will no longer be able to withdraw their children from lessons on relationships and sexuality

Calling the decision a ‘fundamental breach of parental rights’, Safe at School said that parents in Wales will be ‘powerless to protect their children’ from teaching on LGBT+ and other sensitive matters.

Antonia Tully of the Safe at School campaign said: ‘This is a staggering move by the Welsh Government. 88.7% of those who responded to their own public consultation last year said that parents should be able to withdraw their children from LGBT+ classes’.

‘Once again, parents are being totally ignored. The Welsh Government has effectively taken over the education of children and teenagers in the sensitive and intimate areas of human relationships and sexuality. This is the task of parents, not the state. And critically parents are being denied their right to bring up their children in line with their own beliefs and values’.

‘Safe at School will be supporting and advising parents in Wales about what they can do to work with schools to make sure that the new subject does not expose their children to unacceptable and inappropriate teaching.’

Antonia Tully also said: ‘Parents are also under attack from Ofsted. Their Chief Inspector, Amanda Speilman, is now criticising the Government for not doing enough to stop parents from protesting about teaching on relationships which they find unacceptable’.

‘Parents are being turned into the enemies of their children, as well as the state. If our governments were serious about equipping children for life in 21st century, they would be harnessing the support and active engagement of parents. Parents know and understand their children best. Let them teach their own children about relationships and sexuality.’

ABOUT:  This is the second in a series of conferences organised by Anglican Mainstream on sex, RSE [Relationships and Sex Education], culture and youngsters, entitled 'Our kids are being taught what?!' It is also being supported by SPUC Safe at School and other concerned organisations. 

This conference locates the falsely reassuring, but partly or completely untrue, messages targeting our youngsters today about sex and relationships. We unpack the various claims made and expose the myths, as well as promote what is healthy, good and life-affirming. We want the best for our young!

Included is Counter Argument Training or CAT, which analyses, models and equip delegates in how more effectively to deconstruct the 'have you stopped beating your wife yet?' kinds of arguments.

The conference welcomes all concerned adults.

New survey on LGBT teaching in schools shows "public concern for the wellbeing of children"

Almost four in ten people agree that it is inappropriate for schools to teach a six-year old boy that "being gay is acceptable", a new survey has shown. "Far from showing negative attitudes towards homosexuals, this reveals the level of public concern for the wellbeing of children," said Antonia Tully, of the SPUC Safe at School campaign.

The survey, out today, comes as the law requiring all schools in England to teach two new compulsory subjects is now in place; Relationships Education in primary schools and Sex and Relationships Education in secondary schools. Government guidelines on teaching the new subjects state "we expect all pupils to have been taught LGBT content at a timely point".

Antonia Tully said: "This survey shows that the UK public has a significant level of concern about using the school curriculum to teach or promote homosexuality to young children."

The survey conducted by Kantar found that 56% of those who practise a religious faith disagreed with teaching a six-year old that it is acceptable to be homosexual. 30% of people described as 'not religious' also disagreed.

Government out of step with the public

Antonia Tully said: "This tells us that opposition to teaching young children about LGBT relationships and lifestyles cuts across all sections of the public. These percentages are significant and show that the Government is out of step with the public in its drive to normalise LGBT relationships in young children.

We hear much about tolerance from the government and if they are truly tolerant, they will recognise that a very large number of parents do not want to have one particular moral viewpoint imposed on everyone. The parents who wish to uphold their values on natural marriage and relationships need to have their rights and views respected."

Safe at School has issued its latest bulletin which includes a feature on the Government mandate that schools should consult with parents on the school policy for Relationships Education or RSE.

"Now is the time for parents to hold their ground and insist that schools hold a meaningful consultation with them on the policy governing these new subjects. Nothing less than the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of their children is at stake," said Antonia Tully.

What now for school RSE consultations?

RSE delayed but "schools must listen to parents" says Safe at School

SPUC Safe at School has said that schools must listen properly to the concerns of parents following the announcement that the Department for Education is delaying the full implementation of Relationships Education in primary schools and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) in secondary schools, until September 2021.

In the light of the coronavirus lockdown, the DfE, in a communication to schools, have stated that schools do not now have to deliver the new subjects over the 2020/21 academic year, although schools are still being encouraged to do so, if they consider they are well enough prepared and have met all the requirements. The announcement came after Safe at School and other family organisations called for a delay to enable proper consultations to take place between schools and parents. 

Dr Tom Rogers of Safe at School said: "It is imperative that parents take advantage of this reprieve to call on their child's school to hold a proper consultation. Parents should not have any form of Relationships and Sex Education foisted upon their children without being properly consulted. This is particularly important as, from September 2020, parents no longer have an automatic right to withdraw their children from either Relationships Education or RSE, where they are being delivered."

Safe at School has said that delaying the full implementation of Relationships Education will give schools time to hold a proper consultation with parents, and that they now have no excuse not to do so.

"We are hearing from parents that some schools are merely presenting parents with a policy and a curriculum for these new compulsory subjects and counting this as a consultation. This approach is completely inadequate and amounts to a slap in the face to parents," said Dr Rogers.

"A proper consultation should result in schools truly respecting families which do not want their children to be exposed to explicit sexual content and teaching on same-sex relationships in the classroom. This must be accurately reflected in the policy and the teaching materials used in the school."

Concerned parents can read "Important Information for Parents" to learn more about the new compulsory school subjects and how they can engage with schools. Safe at School will continue to support parents in this process and to keep them informed of all further developments.
