Take on the 2.6 Challenge for St Barnabas House

Dear Logan,

Firstly, and most importantly, we hope you and your loved ones are keeping well and safe at this strange time.

If you are itching for a new challenge then we're inviting you, your family and friends to take part in the 2.6 Challenge from Sunday 26 April to help to save St Barnabas House''s services.

We are losing 70% of our fundraising income every month during the coronovirus crisis. So we are asking if you can become a fundraising hero and ensure that local people living with terminal illnesses get the vital support and care they need, now and in the future.

The 2.6 Challenge is a simple way to come together on Sunday 26 April and fundraise for St Barnabas by doing any activity you wish. All you need to do is dream up an activity based around the numbers 2.6 or 26 and set up a fundraising page.

You could go on a 2.6 mile dog walk, juggle for 2.6 minutes, do 26 star jumps, dance for 26 minutes, get 26 people together for a video yoga class, or maybe run a full marathon in laps of your garden - your imagination is the limit!

We understand these are uncertain times, and only want you to take up this challenge if you are able to do so, but every pound that you are able to raise for St Barnabas will make such an enormous difference at this time. It would be wonderful to have your support.

How to be a 2.6 Challenge hero

There are 5 easy steps to taking part in the 2.6 Challenge.

1. Come up with your activity: Do 26 minutes of gardening, hold a plank for 2.6 minutes, knit for 26 minutes, walk up and down your stairs 26 times - the options are endless.

2. Set up a Fundraising Page: Not only will your donations come straight to St Barnabas, but for everyone who fundraises as part of the 2.6 Challenge, we'll get an extra donation from the campaign organisers. Set up your page here

3. Tell the world: Share your fundraising page with everyone you know via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok and tell them about your 2.6 Challenge. Be sure to tag St Barnabas House and use #TwoPointSixChallenge #TogetherApart

4. Do your challenge: On Sunday 26 April, the nation will be coming together as millions of people across the UK complete their 2.6 Challenge. If Sunday 26 doesn't work for you, pick a date that does! Just be sure to post a picture or video on social media of you in action and tag St Barnabas House

5. Share your success: Tell your supporters how you got on. Plus share your pictures and story with us so we can tell everyone the amazing way you were a 2.6 Challenge hero for St Barnabas

Look after yourself

Whatever activity you choose to do, all we ask is that you don't try anything too strenuous and follow the Government guidelines on exercise, going outside and social distancing - but as you'll see there are plenty of 2.6 Challenge ideas where you can be a home hero.

Well done to everyone who’s completed their mile a day in February – we hope you’ve enjoyed taking part, despite the weather making it even more of a challenge. It’s now time to submit your evidence so that we can send you your certificate and a Fit Feb medal.

This can be done using the form on our website here: www.stbh.org.uk/fit-feb-evidence-form, or you can attach the details when replying to this email. All we need is a screenshot from your fitness tracker or phone app, or a photo of your completed Fit Feb calendar. Sunflower Memories Appeal 2020

Dear Mrs Wilson

I'm Stephen Gurr, the Lead Chaplain at St Barnabas House. Firstly, I would like to wish you and your loved ones well. I know that for many of us it has proved tough not being able to see those most close to us. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you personally for your continued support.

You may recently have received our Sunflower Memories Appeal by post or seen it on our website or social media. I am writing to you today to invite you to take part in the appeal, to join with others and remember a loved one. Every year we display colourful sunflower markers at the hospice, each one in memory of a loved one for whom a donation has been made.

You can give as much or as little as you wish. Every donation will go directly towards providing vital care services both at the hospice and in patients'' own homes.

Working at St Barnabas House, I've seen time and time again how the hospice's care brings real hope into the last days and weeks of our patients' lives.

Above all, we want to make sure that we are here during this current crisis - and for many years beyond - to provide vital hospice care to our local community.

All the care and support offered to patients and their families is provided completely free of charge, but to be able to provide this incredible care, we need your support now more than ever. A donation from you today could help us do so much. Anything you can spare will be so gratefully received.

We would love it if you wished to join us in remembering a loved one by taking part in the Sunflower Memories Appeal. Please let us know no later than Friday 24 July so we can make sure your sunflower dedication is in place by the beginning of August.

Sunflowers at the hospice

Our usual gathering will be replaced with a virtual dedication to enable everyone to take part, including those still shielding or self-isolating.

The dedication and the display of sunflowers will be recorded and available on our website and social media pages to view on Friday 21 August.

champion in 2020!

Lots has changed this year and our events are no different. We are committed to keeping you safe and have been working hard behind the scenes and are thrilled to bring you events to keep you busy and active this Autumn!

Sunrise to Remember is a 7 mile walk with a difference, as we bring all the excitement, camaraderie and togetherness of the big day right to you, wherever you are!

What: Walk 7 miles from your home or location of your choice.

When: Saturday 12 September 2020.

Where: Join us live on Facebook at 6am from the comfort of your own home, and as the sun rises we will (virtually) join together before you set off on your 7 mile walk from your home, in your garden or location of your choice!

How: Register now and encourage your friends and family to sign up too! Registration is just ?12 and kids 16 and under, go free. (Closing date for registrations is 6 September 2020.)

Why: It is a chance to remember your loved ones and a time to join together, walking from the darkness into the light, bringing with us hope, unity and support - for our patients, for our nurses and for each other.

Challenge yourself to a cool 30km or brand new epic 80km socially distanced ride on Sunday 11 October 2020!

The undulating course will test you with its multitude of tricky climbs and rapid downhill descents. Whichever route you choose, you're guaranteed an exhilarating day in the saddle!

Don suffers from incurable heart failure. He lost his wife and both children to cancer and lives alone, so his visits to our Day Hospice are a lifeline.

Now I feel like I'm waiting for that door bell to ring and for someone to tell me, "Don, you're coming back to Day Hospice."

Dear Logan,

I want to apologise if this email arrives at a difficult time. If you have been badly affected personally by the coronavirus crisis - if you have lost your job, if you have been ill or if you have lost someone close to you then I am so sorry to trouble you.

But the fact is that I have little choice but to write to you today. Because now more than ever, the families who depend on St Barnabas House need the help of friends like you.

Of course, if the crisis has meant that you are now facing real financial difficulties then I understand. But if you can afford to, will you please give whatever you can spare to bring some desperately needed support to families facing some very dark times?

We have had to close our Day Hospice and cafe and move to essential visiting only, but we have opened 5 new beds to get patients out of over-stretched hospitals and into our care. And we have introduced a 'helping hands' scheme offering social and practical assistance to those patients staying at home.

At the same time our shops have been forced to close and the vital funding they provide has disappeared. Fundraising events large and small have been cancelled. And this is causing us a huge problem.

The maths is simple. It costs ?700,000 a month to run St Barnabas, most of which comes from fundraising. And right now we are losing 70% of our fundraising income every month - it is only a matter of time before we run out of money.
