Dear Reader,

I am very excited to announce that SYC has a new Service Portfolio - Health and Disability.

This might sound like just a small change, but for us, it is pretty significant. We are devoting more time, energy and resources to deliver services that empower people with disability or mental illness to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Why Health and Disability?
Unfortunately, people with disability or living with mental illness can experience some of the poorest life outcomes. The personal and financial cost of these poorer outcomes is substantial.

The recent Productivity Commission report into Mental Health placed the cost to the Australian economy of mental ill-health and suicide alone at $43 to $51 billion per year. Incomes for people with disability are typically less than half of those for people without disabilities, limiting their capacity to support themselves.

Our Expertise
You might not think of SYC when you think of disability services, but we actually work with thousands of people with disability and mental ill-health each year and help them to achieve some amazing outcomes.

We're passionate about seeing people achieve their potential, no matter where they started. We have spent the last year assessing how we can add value and impact to our services through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

We are now a NDIS registered provider offering a range of services across South Australia and Victoria.

We are using our existing experience in the areas of Home, Learning, Working and Justice to provide support and programs to help people with disability reach their goals. You can find out more about our services on our website.

The cold weather is already upon us, and this Winter is going to be a particularly tough time for vulnerable young people without safe housing.

HYPA is a front-line service and has been an essential provider for young people during the Covid-19 pandemic. This year we have seen a 30 per cent increase in young people accessing HYPA services.

Many of the young people who come to HYPA have no support networks to turn to, and rely on us for guidance, security and help during uncertain times.

Our approach is about independence, not dependence, prosperity, not poverty. Donating isn't just about supporting an individual - it is about doing something that supports whole families, communities and generations to come.

A donation of $20 can provide a young person with a metrocard allowing them to travel to appointments, school and learning, and keep them connected to the community.

A donation of $100 can provide a Winter clothing collection to keep a young person warm, including a jacket, scarf, gloves, jumper and more.

A donation of $1000 can purchase a "move in ready'' pack containing furniture and essential items to set a young person up in their own home.

As a human services organisation, we know that housing, employment and access to education are more important now than ever. Due to the current pandemic, many of our programs have seen an increase in the number of people needing our support, and we expect this will continue throughout the year.

We have been inspired by many great efforts of the people we work with, remaining positive and achieving their goals, despite extra difficult situations.

We have also seen amazing dedication from our staff team during this time, making sure services stay open and operational throughout the past few months.

This newsletter contains just a few examples of some resilient Australians still achieving great things. We hope it inspires you too.

National Volunteer Week Spotlight
Tina contributed 800 hours of volunteer time over 3 years, in administration support for our HYPA Homes program, whilst studying psychology. Now her hard work has translated to paid employment.

From crisis to community
Jasmine grew up under the Guardianship of the Minister, having lost both of her parents. After turning 18, she was living in crisis accommodation. HYPA Housing allowed her the space to improve her personal wellbeing and look for employment.

Emmanuel secured a 2-bedroom apartment with a friend, but discovered it to be unliveable and infested with cockroaches when he moved in.

"I was about to lose hope until I found TIAS."

A lot has changed lately, but some things haven''t.

We understand that the services SYC delivers to support our community may be more important now than any other time in our 61-year history. We''re committed to ensuring as much continuity as possible for Australians in need during this time.

All SYC, Job Prospects and HYPA sites and programs are still operating. We have made some adjustments to how we provide some of our services to ensure everyone''s health and safety. We continue to monitor and implement advice from health authorities.

Some of the measures we have currently implemented include:

Carrying out appointments and meetings via phone or email wherever possible.
Contacting people to make sure they are well and not in a risk category before meeting with them.
Adhering to social distancing measures, outlined by the government.
Increasing the frequency and coverage of our cleaning practices.
Where possible, our employees are working from home.

Our advice and response is subject to change, pending further government and health advice.

Our resilient staff team have responded quickly and efficiently to make sure we can continue the important work we do.

We are now offering employment services via phone, email, messaging and video calls.

This applies to jobactive, Disability Employment Services, ParentsNext, Transition to Work, and the Sticking Together Project at all our locations around Australia.

Our tenancy advisors are available via phone and email, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

We''re working hard to support South Australians who have increasing concerns about paying their rent, routine inspections and SACAT hearings.

Our Youth Homelessness services remain open, offering outreach and mobile support wherever possible.

Our Trace-A-Place Shopfront is still open 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday. We provide safe spaces for young people to access showers, toilets, hygiene products, sanitary items and food.

Our trainers are supporting students and participants to complete their courses online or in take-home workbooks.

Our classroom and group-based learning programs are also transitioning to distance education, in line with the education department.
