A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CEO
Jillian Hasner
Dear Friends of Take Stock:

As we enter the holiday season, Take Stock has so much to be thankful for as we close out celebrating our 25th anniversary year. First, we are grateful for you – our mentors, partners, donors, community, staff, and friends that have supported Take Stock in Children for the past 25 years. Together, we have successfully served 36,329 students across Florida’s 67 counties with more than $250 million in Florida Prepaid Project STARS Scholarships.

Take Stock’s 25th anniversary year will also be remembered as one of the most challenging years. These past several months have brought on hardships to many of our Take Stock students, mentors, staff, and their families. Yet, we have witnessed the power of perseverance through our motto of Impact Over Obstacles. The Take Stock network transitioned from an in-person, school-based model to a virtual model to ensure our students continue to receive the support services they so desperately need during this time. It hasn’t been easy, but we are so grateful to everyone who has offered support, suggestions, and patience as we navigated our way through the virtual world.

Together, we have made an impact. Take Stock is proud of the lives changed, careers launched, and dreams that have become a reality these past 25 years.

To help us commemorate Take Stock in Children’s 25th anniversary, we ask you to participate in our $25 in 25 Giving Day to support student success and Take Stock’s work of changing lives through scholarships, mentors, and hope.

Today through Tuesday, December 1st, please join in the global day of generosity and giving, and support Take Stock in Children with a gift of $25 for our 25 years of service or any gift of support you choose.

Together, we will continue our work, ensuring Take Stock students achieve success in college, career, and life.

Respectfully –
Jillian Hasner
President and CEO

Kevin Olsen
Take Stock in Children Volusia County
  • UCF, BA - Human Communication
  • FSU, MS - Higher Education
Kevin Olsen was awarded a Take Stock Scholarship in 8th grade as part of the Take Stock in Children program in Volusia County and has been involved with the program ever since. Kevin graduated high school in 2017 and received his BA in Human Communication from the University of Central Florida (UCF). While at the University of Central Florida, Kevin was a part of the Student Government, leading government affairs, student advocacy, and campus safety.
Kevin is currently enrolled at Florida State University (FSU), pursuing his Master’s Degree in Higher Education. He is working as the Graduate Assistant for Campus Traditions in the Student Organizations & Involvement Office at Florida State University.

Kevin expressed that, “Take Stock in Children (TSIC) has helped me in so many ways. If it weren’t for the monetary support, school debt would have been a huge deterrent for me in going to college. Equally as important was my mentor’s support through high school and the staff’s support at the county and state level, who pushed me to be the best version of myself that I could be. They did everything they could to ensure that I was successful, and they moved mountains to get me where I am today. Even after graduation from high school, they allowed me to remain involved, share my story, and give back to the organization that inspired me to be the first in my family to graduate from college. Their dedication is one of the many reasons why I chose to study and work in higher education so that I can help support students reach their dreams as TSIC has helped me.”
Maria Sastre
Take Stock in Children, Florida Board of Directors

Did you have a mentor in your life? And what was your most memorable lesson from your mentor?

I had several mentors, beginning with my beloved maternal grandmother and several bosses early in my career….later in my career, I switched roles to become a mentor, which has also afforded me many valuable lessons. My grandmother was born in 1899 in Cuba and was exiled in this country when she was 61 years old. She always reminded me of how much she loved our country for the opportunity it was affording me and all of her children and grandchildren. She often said you can be anything you want to be in this country and don’t ever let anyone hold you back because you are a girl! That was powerful and still resonates with me, especially because I am now a grandmother to girls.
What wisdom would the Maria Sastre of today share with a 15 year old Maria?

Stay focused on your school and on being independent. Earn your college and or university/vocational certification and make your path forward happen. Stay away from “Group Think”! Be your own winner…
How long have you served as a member of the Board of Directors for Take Stock in Children?

This is my 10th year.
Share what serving on the Take Stock in Children Board means to you.

I appreciate being able to offer feedback and support to every leader of Take Stock and advocate for the organization whenever and wherever possible.
Do you have any fond memories of Take Stock that you’d like to share?

My fondest memory is our effort to secure the U.S. Department of Education I3 (Investing In Innovation) grant and the challenges that I managed through that process. I distinctly recall the day I received the call that we would be successful as a grant applicant. It was a call I will never forget.

Take Stock in Children is just finishing its year of celebrating 25 years of service. As we look to begin our next 25 years of service, any words of encouragement for our Take Stock network of partners, students, mentors?

Continue to engage your students, graduates, and partners in this mission to achieve success through education access and education equality. Education is the great equalizer!

Take Stock in College
Now in its third year, Take Stock in College was launched to deliver on the Take Stock promise-breaking the cycle of poverty through education by ensuring postsecondary enrollment, completion, and degree attainment. The Take Stock in College program assists our collegiate scholars in successfully navigating the college and university system that can be so challenging to underrepresented and first-generation students. The program began with a 67% college completion rate, and it currently has a 70% college completion rate. While this is an incredible achievement, we also know we can further increase this number, transforming even more lives. Accordingly, we have taken on the goal to improve our postsecondary completion rate to mirror that of our 98% high school completion rate.
To realize this bold and essential goal, Take Stock in College aims to support all 6000+ Take Stock in College scholars attending one of Florida’s 40 public colleges and universities by connecting them with existing postsecondary resources. Research shows that one of the most critical times in students’ lives is the transition from high school to college and the first year of college. Take Stock in College offers the opportunity to continue the trusted relationships we have nurtured with our Take Stock students since sixth grade, as each student scholar begins their postsecondary education.  This continued connection enables us to identify our students’ needs and help them navigate through the academic and social-emotional resources already offered by their college or university. Guiding scholars to leverage and utilize these resources helps ensure they stay on track to complete their education.
The Take Stock in College program works collaboratively with key staff at Florida’s 40 public colleges and universities and in conjunction with our 45 local Take Stock affiliate partners by offering wrap-around services. Some of the services Take Stock in College provides to increase postsecondary degree attainment for each Take Stock in College scholar are:

  1. Student Ambassadors to offer peer mentoring support
  2. College Completion Coaching & Postsecondary Resource Specialization
  3. Texting: Targeted Nudging Campaigns via texting and email engagement
  4. Online Community via Take Stock Connect
  5. Informational Webinars with Guest Expert Lecturers
  6. Themed Weekly Curricula
  7. Social Media Outreach to inspire connection

Take Stock in College is the newest initiative in the continuum of care for our students, and the program has already achieved positive outcomes. This year, Take Stock partnered with the Helios Education Foundation to provide our college students direct financial support grants during the global pandemic. COVID-19 disproportionately impacts first-generation students, and the Take Stock in College program is committed to improving student outcomes, increasing FAFSA completion, and keeping students enrolled in college during this difficult time. We are pleased to be able to provide financial support to Take Stock in College students through the Helios Education Foundation-Take Stock Florida COVID-19 Student Support Grants. These funds help Take Stock in College students combat the lingering effects of the global pandemic, many of whom faced unimaginable challenges. These direct student support grants provide funding to students for educational needs such as textbooks, internet access, transportation, food, and housing.  Together, with the Helios Education Foundation and our college and university partners, Take Stock in College is working to ensure our scholars succeed in college, career, and life.
