We are excited to announce a new graduate dual-certification program in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education beginning this fall!

The new post-baccalaureate dual-certificate program will offer teacher candidates certifications in elementary (k-6) and early childhood education (prek-3). The application portal can be found on the Graduate Studies Website.

This new dual-certification program offers those interested in becoming teachers an opportunity to seek New Jersey Certificates of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) in both early childhood (prek-3) and elementary education (k-6). This one-year program (27 credit program) gives candidates a high quality, rigorous, immersive experience, while costing less than a typical graduate degree program. The program utilizes multiple instructional formats: online, blended, and in-person, thus making a more convenient, flexible, and accessible format. With placements in diverse classrooms, closely mentored clinical experiences, candidates can hone their teaching skills, ready to join the dynamic teaching profession with confidence and a TCNJ recommendation for a CEAS!

This program replaces the old MAT program in Early Childhood Education and the MAT in Elementary Education program.

What does this dual certification program entail and how is it similar and different from the MAT program?

New program (post bac dual certificate) Previous MAT program

27 credits certificate 36 credits graduate degree only
Duration: one year 14 months
No GRE requirements GRE required
Bachelor’s Degree with 3.0 GPA Bachelor’s Degree with 3.0 GPA
(at least 60 credits of liberal learning) (at least 60 credits of liberal learning)
PreK through Grade 6 certificate PreK–3 OR K-6
Basic skills requirement as mandated Basic skills requirement as mandated
by NJDOE (See here) by NJDOE

Cohort model (uniform experiences) Multiple entry points
Varied instructional All in-person/on-sitemodes
(online, hybrid, in person)
