Hi Jon,

This week, I had it in my tasks to put together a top-10 list of quotes from Thomas Jefferson. I thought it would make for a refreshing change-of-pace from the insanity that is partisan politics today. (and, of course, I included one on parties)

You probably won''t be surprised to know the first thing I learned - top-10 is almost impossible, and the hardest part is to keep it even close to that.  Jefferson had a LOT to say - and the closest I was able to get was 15 in 4 major categories, which you can read through below.

I also covered these all (with some added context) in this morning''s Path to Liberty Fast Friday Edition at this link

FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES

"A free people claim their rights, as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate."
-Summary View Rights of British America (1774)

"An elective despotism was not the government we fought for."
-Notes on the State of Virginia (1784)

"If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all"
-Letter to Francis Hopkinson (13 Mar 1789)

"Law is often but the tyrant''s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual"
-Letter to Issac H. Tiffany (4 Apr 1819)

"No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another"
-Letter to Francis Gilmer (7 Jun 1816)

CONSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE

"I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground: That " all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States or to the people." To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, no longer susceptible of any definition."
-Opinion on the Constitutionality of a National Bank (15 Feb 1791)

"The true theory of our constitution is surely the wisest & best, that the states are independant as to every thing within themselves."
-Letter to Gideon Granger (13 Aug 1800)

"The government created by this compact was not made the exclusive or final judge of the extent of the powers delegated to itself; since that would have made it's discretion, & not the constitution, the measure of it's powers"

"Whensoever the General government assumes undelegated powers, it's acts are unauthoritative, void, & of no force"
-both from Kentucky Resolutions of 1798

WARNINGS

"What has destroyed liberty and the rights of man in every government which has ever existed under the sun? the generalising & concentrating all cares and powers into one body"
-Letter to Joseph C. Cabell  (2 Feb 1816)

"You seem to consider the judges as the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions: a very dangerous doctrine indeed and one which would place us under the despotism of an Oligarchy."
-Letter to Charles Jarvis (28 Sept 1820)

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

"Where powers are assumed which have not been delegated, a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy: that every state has a natural right, in cases not within the compact to nullify of their own authority all assumptions of power by others within their limits: that without this right, they would be under the dominion, absolute and unlimited, of whosoever might exercise this right of judgment for them"
-Oct Draft of the Kentucky Resolutions of 1798

"We are not to expect to be translated from despotism to liberty, in a feather-bed."
-Letter to Lafayette (2 Apr 1790)

"The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches, that we must be contented to secure what we can get from time to time, and eternally press forward for what is yet to get. It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good."
-Letter to Rev. Charles Clay (27 Jan 1790)

"If a nation expects to be ignorant & free, in a state of civilisation, it expects what never was & never will be."
-Letter to Charles Yancey (6 Jan 1816)

WATCH/LISTEN
I went through each of these important quotes on Friday''s episode of the TAC''s Path to Liberty. It''s just a 14 minute show - but packed with a bunch of essential info. At the link below you''ll find a video and podcast edition - plus additional links to source documents so you can read and learn even more:

https://blog.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2020/10/thomas-jeffersons-vision-top-15-quotes-on-the-constitution-and-liberty/

As I mentioned above, the hardest part of putting my notes together for this one was to keep it to 15. But if you like this kind of quick overview, make sure to let me know - I could also put together some quotes and an episode on spending and debt, paper money and banking, foreign policy, constitutional clauses - and more.

I hope you found this interesting and educational. Thank you for being here with us!

THE CONSTITUTION: EVERY ISSUE, EVERY TIME. NO EXCEPTIONS, NO EXCUSES.

Here at the Tenth Amendment Center, we''re standing up against some of the most dangerous and unconstitutional programs in history. And I need your help right now.

NSA spying, gun control, the Federal Reserve and the DEA, EPA, BLM, TSA - I could make the list much longer, but I''m sure you get the point. An endless list of "laws," rules, orders, and regulations have transformed this country from a constitutional republic into...well something snowballing into a totalitarian nightmare.

To the establishment, your Constitution and your rights are nothing more than "intolerance."

Rather than teaching that the Constitution is a set of rules to LIMIT federal power, these people having been ramping up their all-out war on the Founders'' Constitution - and your liberty.

Tenth Amendment Center is not the first, but we''ve been the biggest proponent of using the Founders'' advice to stop unconstitutional programs through the states. As our friend Tom Woods put it, TAC "has done more than anyone in the world to advance the Jeffersonian principle of nullification."

I''ve got a great part time team and a bunch of amazing volunteers helping out, but I cannot continue this fight without the necessary funds to help educate millions of Americans on these attacks against the Constitution and liberty.

I''m not asking for a lot, but when a lot of people like you join together and pitch in a little, it makes a huge difference. Would you please start a small (or large!) monthly donation to support our work today?

$2/month helps us make a difference!

THANK YOU!
