Dear North Texas SHRM Members and Friends,
As part of a board approved process, students of a TWU Marketing class may contact you for a survey regarding your experience as a member or former member of the North Texas SHRM chapter. The purpose of this project is to assist us in our ongoing efforts to improve and to plan for a future that will benefit our organization, HR professionals throughout Denton County, and future marketing professionals.
The TWU marketing class that is conducting the research project for North Texas SHRM this semester will need our membership list. The class will survey current members, lapsed members, and HR professionals in the area that have never been members. We normally don’t share our membership or contact list, but the board decided in this instance that releasing our list for this purpose is warranted.
Be assured, that before any group or individual at TWU can send out a survey, TWU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) has to approve it. The IRB application includes the list of questions. The IRB also requires a consent paragraph to be at the beginning of the survey (which is also an opt-out). Past president, Dr. Derek Crews, and TWU professor will send the North Texas SHRM board the proposed list of questions for its approval before the IRB application is submitted. Also, several board members will be involved with helping the TWU team decide what questions to ask.
My hope is that you will agree to participate.
Thank you,
Carla Flowers, PHR, SHRM-CP President, 2019-2020

April Meeting & May Conference
NTSHRM News
North Texas SHRM
News & Events
Dear North Texas SHRM Members and Friends,
Greetings, I hope that you are all staying safe and well during this difficult time. Due to the mandate to limit the size of in-person gatherings, the North Texas SHRM chapter will not hold it April meeting. Since the mandate prohibiting large gatherings is supposed to lift on May 17, and the conference begins May 18, for now we believe the conference will go on as scheduled. However, our conference team is working closely with the hotel on contingency plans if we are still in lockdown when the conference is scheduled. Our plan if that happens would be to reschedule the event for a later date. Once we know we will let you know the plans for moving forward.
Additionally, I want to pass on other news from attorneys Lon Williams concerning the Dallas Paid Sick Leave Ordinance Dustin Paschal concerning the Coronavirus Impact in the workplace.
Sincerely,
Carla Flowers President
From Lon..
Dear Friends and Clients:
Although the Dallas Paid Sick Leave Ordinance is being litigated, and we had anticipated that the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas would issue an injunction similar to actions the courts in Austin and San Antonio had taken in regards to those municipalities' proposed paid sick leave ordinances, it appears that this court may not issue any injunctive action blocking its enforcement before April 1st. After April 1st civil penalties may be sought by the City of Dallas. Therefore, we suggest that you examine the attached synopsis of the Dallas Ordinance and review your company's relevant policies and procedures to determine what steps, if any, you should take to ensure compliance.
Please also note that the attached synopsis contains links to the required posters in English and Spanish as well as a copy of the Ordinance itself.
If you have any questions concerning your situation, please contact LaToya Alexander, Josh Ownings, Tom Reddin or Lon Williams in Polsinelli's Dallas L&E practice, using the following email addresses.

Less Drama, More Productivity:
Three Strategies to Build a Culture of High Performance
Presented by Mike Caracalas
Webinar: Thursday, September 24th Noon - 1:00 pm
Approved for one hour of Strategic HRCI and SHRM credit!
Drawing on research conducted jointly by the Human Capital Institute and the International Coaching Federation, this talk will demonstrate one fundamental truth: your company''s success is driven by the capability of your managers. Developing manager capability is your strongest lever to pull, but investing in more and more "manager training" is expensive, with dubious results. The solution is coaching and there are three strategies you can employ to maximize the results you get from your coaching dollars.
Mike Caracalas is hired by senior executives who are frustrated by all the drama that comes with leading people. What those executives want are high performing teams that are productive and focused on growing the business. Mike works with individual executives to raise their leadership impact and with executive teams to eliminate dysfunction, generate sustainable results, and grow the business.

Dear friends,
While the Coronavirus scare has temporarily turned our world upside down, we are still optimistic and planning for the future. If you have not registered already, please do so here:
Of course, as things are changing day-to-day, our plans will change as needed. Our first option will be to push the conference dates back to later in the year, if possible If we have to cancel it for this year, you can request a refund or carry-over your registration to the 2021 conference.
We will continue to monitor the situation and update you as needed.
Please contact us at ntshrmboard@gmail.com or leave a voice mail for us at 940-784-3798.

Dear Mason Smith
The North Texas SHRM chapter has made the hard decision to cancel the March 26, 2020, luncheon out of an abundance of caution concerning the spread of COVID-19 pandemic (corona virus). We came to this decision after learning that our speaker had to cancel because his employer, the EEOC, has curtailed employees'' travel.
Registration for this event has been disabled.
We hope to plan a make-up session this summer, perhaps in June, so stay tuned for more information!

2020 Holiday Social and Installation of Officers
Like everyone else, we are trying something new this year for our Holiday Social and Installation of Officers. We teamed up with Steve''s Wine Bar to have Board members gather together for the installation of officers followed by a virtual wine tasting. How does this work?
Steve''s Wine Bar has selected four varieties of wine (maybe a champagne?) and will have one of their wine experts discuss each one of them as you sit in the comfort of your own home. Or you may choose to stay at Steve''s, but you will need to make a reservation.
There are two ways to enjoy this event:
2 oz servings of all four wines - $24
(Can be picked up on the day of the event after 2:00 p.m.)
Purchase a bottle of wine (your choice) - $27 each
(Can be picked up any day starting the week before the event, at which time you will choose which of the wines you want to bring home for the tasting.)
To make sure Steve''s has enough wine for everyone, the deadline to register is noon on Tuesday, December 1. A Zoom link will be sent out on Wednesday to everyone who registered.
We are excited about this event and look forward to seeing you there!

Wine tastings, or bottles, can be picked up from

Delivering Value to the Modern Workforce: Realigning Your Approach to employee Wellbeing
Employees are your greatest asset. But do they feel that way? They will if your organization's culture and wellbeing programs send that message. An integrated wellbeing strategy that makes employees feel good - even brag about - their employer, can significantly impact employee attraction and retention and, possibly, the business outcomes. Join us to review how to build a sustainable wellbeing strategy for your organization. During the session we will review:
What is an effective wellbeing program, and why it's so important to have one that works for your specific organization
Realigning your approach to employee wellbeing so that it connects the physical, financial, emotional and social components with visible leadership support
The ways in which a good wellbeing program positively affects attraction, retention, engagement and productivity
Kirstie's foundational experience lies with HealthStart Inc., the consulting company she established in 1996. The company focused on driving wellness strategies designed to maintain program consistency for organizations with more than 1,000 employees across multiple geographies. She launched her broker/consultant work after a move to south Florida where she sat on several committees to further the wellbeing agenda for the state.

Annual Conference Update
Dear North Texas SHRM Chapter Members and Friends,
Like all of you, our lives have been disrupted and the future is uncertain due to the coronavirus pandemic and the shelter-in-place orders we are under. After much consideration, we made the difficult decision to postpone our Annual Conference to later in the year. Currently, we are looking at the end of August and working with the Embassy Suites to confirm their availability. As soon as we are able, we will let you know the updated schedule. If you are already registered, thank you, we appreciate your loyalty and hope you will be able to make it in August. For those of you who have not registered yet, we will re-open registration as soon as new dates are confirmed. We will also reach out to all of our speakers and confirm if they will be able to make it on the new dates and we will update the NTXSHRM website if anyone has to cancel.
We hope you are all taking advantage of the COVID-19 resources we put on the website. If you have any comments or suggestions, we would love to hear from you so we can continue to make NTXSHRM a top resource for you for all things human resources.
We look forward to seeing you in person as soon as we are able. In the meantime, we will keep in touch via email, social media and our website. Your board of directors is working hard to find ways to offer resources and information to keep us connected and informed. More to come.
Thanks,
Shirley

More Than a Manager: Becoming a True Leader
Excellent management skills are great, but management skills and experience doesn't automatically turn anyone into a true leader. In this session, participants will begin their path to true leadership as they learn what it means to be a leader, the qualities of great and effective leaders, how to build credibility and trust with their teams, leadership styles, and leadership techniques.
Mallory Herrin is an experienced human resources consultant and industry recognized thought leader, serving small and mid-size businesses. As a consultant, she is responsible for guiding the human resources function for dozens of clients across a variety of industries throughout the United States. She creates and implements HR strategy for each of her clients across all areas of HR based on forecasting of business needs to support her clients' short-term and long-term goals and growth plans.
As the HR representation of her clients' executive leadership teams, she handles a variety of HR issues, acts as the point person for formal charges or litigation, leads investigations of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation claims, oversees other HR functional areas such as benefits, payroll, and risk, selects and implements relevant software, and works to streamline processes and improve efficiencies of the overall HR function.

2020 has been a year that has challenged us personally and professionally. We've grieved over lost routines, loss of family and friends due to COVID-19, and loss of any sense of normalcy. And yet, I believe we've all found ways to find joy in our less hectic schedules, more time with our loved ones, and a better appreciation of life.
Now let's look forward to 2021 with joy, with a renewed energy to bring about positive change at work and at home, and to continue to challenge ourselves and grow in our roles as HR leaders.
I look forward to getting to know each of you and to have more connections, programs, and resources available through North Texas SHRM so we can have a more meaningful impact on those we work with in 2021.
