Batten down the hatches: news storm

Brand new wonky disco remix of Warmduscher's debauched 'Midnight Dipper' single, from the undisputed kings of wonky disco remixes - Soulwax. This one has been doing the rounds in the 2ManyDJs/Despacio Soundsystem sets since August and now the Dewaele brothers have gifted it to the world. Proof, if ever it were needed, that love is real.

If you like the 'Duscher on record, it's even better in the flesh, as sold out shows across the country attest. Warmduscher will appear at the BBC 6 Music Festival in London on March 8, and for their biggest headline show to date at the legendary Heaven nightclub on March 20. Both shows are long sold out, as is most of the band's March tour.

The band have just announced November dates in Glasgow, Manchester and Brighton and December shows across mainland Europe. All dates here. Be strong.

Sarathy Korwar follows last year's politically charged and critically-lauded More Arriving album with the 'Birthright' single. It expands on the themes of South Asian identity explored on that record, and features another brilliant, cutting turn from London-based poet Zia Ahmed over a driving, hypnotic rhythm. His dark, provocative sense of humour shone through on album tracks 'Bol' and 'Mango', and has been a focal point for Korwar's recent live shows.

"'Birthright' talks of the absurdity of lines drawn in the ground that define us," Korwar expands. "Do we belong in our homeland? Where will we be seen as ourselves? It also draws attention to the climate crisis and how race, class, faith and caste play into the equation of who will drown first."

Korwar's biggest London headline show yet (at Village Underground on May 12) will include appearances from vocalists that featured on More Arriving, plus other special guests. Korwar will also appear at The Great Escape, Green Man, End Of The Road and Gilles Peterson's We Out Here this summer.

Just when you thought you''d heard all the music and read all of the internet, Nightports return with NEW MUSIC. They have Betamax of The Comet Is Coming in tow, who by some cosmic coincidence are celebrating the fourth anniversary of the release of their first album Channel The Spirits. You may wish to revisit that after you''ve finished with NEW MUSIC from Nightports. Wash your hands.

Nightports return with their second in a series of albums for Leaf - Nightports w/ Betamax. It follows 2018's Nightports w/ Matthew Bourne, which as the name suggests, drew its source material from a series of sessions by our Matthew Bourne, on a range of different pianos.

This time, Nightports have enlisted the formidable talents of drummer and percussionist Betamax, the beating rhythmic heart of sonic explorers The Comet Is Coming. As ever, Nightports is based on a simple but unbreakable rule of restriction: only sounds produced by the featured musician can be used. Nothing else. These sounds can be transformed, distorted, translated, processed and reprocessed, stretched, cut, ordered and reordered without limitation.

Recorded in one day in February 2018 at Malcolm Catto's Quatermass Sound Lab studio, Betamax did his thing within of a tangled web of cables, microphones and vintage equipment. Over the following months, Adam Martin and Mark Slater set about decoding the recorded results of that day.

Listen to the new and timely Laurence Pike single ''Nero'' - a moment of contemplation in a particularly tumultuous world. Pike continues in a rich creative vein with the release of Prophecy, his third solo album in as many years, following Holy Spring (2019) and Distant Early Warning (2018). Inspired to write and record in response to the devastating wild fires in his native Australia, the percussionist, composer and producer has created a work for our times. There is an instinctive and emotional resonance here, driven by his reaction to the climate emergency.

Laurence Pike on Prophecy:

The music on Prophecy was made during an intense period of climate-related disasters in my home of Australia last summer that seemed to represent the beginning of a strange new way of existing on Earth.

The pieces were developed in the space of four weeks at my home, and then captured in a single day of studio performances. As a result, the music is as much an assemblage of moments from the days leading up to the recording (stepping into my garden to be greeted by a dark pink sun against a brown sky, and ash gently raining on me) as it is a reflection of how I felt in the moment playing them live in the studio.??

In the short time since, we've gone from staying inside and wearing face masks because the city was completely surrounded by fire, and the air filled with acrid smoke, to staying indoors to stop the spread of a global pandemic.

Prophecies often foretell of the end of the world, and it wouldn't be unreasonable to say things have felt a little apocalyptic down here for the last several months. Yet, despite decades old studies predicting catastrophic bushfire seasons in Australia, we've been living in an era where science seems be have become an ideological choice for those elected to represent our best interests.

Put simply, I believe recent events are all part of the broader theme of sustainability. In the face of this, it's inevitable to question the very purpose of making music, and how it can contribute to the discourse at a time like this. I'm not a scientist, nor a policy maker. I don't even consider myself to be an activist. I'm a musician. Music has been the prism of my existence as long as I can remember, and I think at its heart music should be a form of storytelling.

It seems to me that humans are inherently dynamic in nature, and that our current culture in many ways has stalled in its dynamism. We're searching for a narrative to direct us in the face of an uncertain future. For some this means retreating to the past, turning inward, and for others, it means looking forward, opening up. I've come to realise that the pursuit of performing solo over the last few years has been my unconscious response to the feeling of cultural stasis that's pervaded the world as a result.

I often think of something that the great saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter said: "Play and write music the way you want the world to be". If nothing else, I'd like my music to present the possibility of a way a being; a space that is dynamic in its intent - drawing on the language of the past, yet responsive to the moment, interpreted with tools of the present, and open to the narrative of the future being one that has yet to be told.

Despite the seismic shifts that society is currently experiencing, I sense an exciting opportunity for progress rather than retreat, and as an artist, I can only contribute the best way I know how; to make music in the way I want the world to be.

This Saturday is the first Record Store Day 2020 'drop', and sees the release of two Leaf 12"s which have been 'coming soon' all year. Like many retailers, record shops across the planet have been devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic, and many are struggling to keep the doors open. Record Store Day is about supporting them as much as it is about artists and labels.

If you can, please get out to your local shop this Saturday - or if that's not possible, from 6pm UK time anything that's not been sold during the day will be available to order online, meaning you should be able to pick them up wherever you are.

Laurence Pike and visual artist Clemens Habicht continue their fruitful working relationship with a new video for 'Ember'. Taken from the album Prophecy, which was recorded in response to the recent wild fires that devastated Australia, the track sees Pike weave his muted magic on drum kit, between triggered piano and vocal samples.

"The video accompaniment to 'Ember' is an evolution of the methodology established in previous collaborations on 'Drum Chant' and 'Nero'," explains Habicht. "The shapes in motion again resemble print making abstractions of form that visually parallel Laurence''s exploratory music. This video departs from a direct musical synchronicity of image and sound and captures another type of internal notation, using motion from an activity outside of performance."

Prophecy is available now on limited edition yellow vinyl, CD and digital.

There is also an EP accompaniment to the album entitled Destiny, which is available to download exclusively on Bandcamp on a pay-what-you feel basis.

Bandcamp have announced that they will continue to waive their fees on the first Friday of every month for the rest of the year, in support of artists and labels. It''s a great thing they''re doing. We''re forever grateful, and we''re all in.

The dust has barely settled on the release of Laurence Pike''s album Prophecy two weeks ago, and the hardest working drummer in rock/electronic/pop/jazz/ambient/experimental is back with more.

"I''m never quite sure what the result will be when I go to the studio to record," Pike explains. "I prepare in the sense that I am prepared to take on what the music demands, but beyond that I usually only have a list on a piece of paper that indicates some sort of road map for the day, covering possible points of departure.
As an addendum to Prophecy, here''s a collection of some of the side excursions from the session. Three tracks that are all cut from the same cloth as the album, any of which could have easily been included on the LP."

Sarathy Korwar on 'Turner on the 20':

'Turner on the 20' is a track made in response to the ideas presented in an online review of my album More Arriving. It stated, "As a protest record, surprisingly enough, More Arriving falls short of its high standards due to bland generalisations, such as 'which racist do you want on your bank note?' And not least because the English painter J.M.W. Turner - the new face of the 20 pound note - campaigned for the abolition of slavery."

I found it frustrating that it was deemed necessary to pick out an album that tackles racism and criticise it because it wasn't specifically naming the racists.

People's discomfort with terms like 'Which racist do you want on your bank note?' and 'Britain is racist' shows an incapacity to admit and acknowledge one's own privilege and complicity in crimes committed. We (Zia and myself) are challenging the notion that because Turner has been officially celebrated, we should no longer be calling out the racism that the economy of Britain has historically been built on. This track is our effort to question the knee-jerk defences to today's racist climate put forward by often well-meaning people.

We hear this opinion too often - "We can't paint the entire country with the same brush" or "We aren't all racist, so don't call Britain racist!". The only position on this is to say - racism exists. It existed in the past. It exists now. This country was built on the back of racist policies and we need to continue calling it out and dismantling the structural racism that still exists.

The song also mocks the idea that "Things are better than they were before, so stop whining about racism all the time". Now we are woke to racism so things can't be the same right? The notion that racism was a problem in the 70s with the National Front but now things are different (ie better) is misleading. For the most part, all it does is nurture the status quo and prevent any meaningful change from happening.

And lastly, no disrespect to Turner. He was a cool dude.

Nightports'' collaborative album with the mighty Betamax of The Comet Is Coming is out now. It''s the second in a series of albums by Adam Martin and Mark Slater featuring sounds produced by just one performer and their instrument, in this case drum kit and percussion. It follows 2018''s Nightports w/ Matthew Bourne. Leaf''s little black book is very much open...

"We wanted to make a record that places focus and detail on the instrument typically positioned at the back of an ensemble," Martin observes. In doing so they've arrived at an album with all the energy and dynamics you'd expect, suffused with a keen sense of melody and emotion. Betamax's innate command of the drums and Nightports' sympathetic approach to recording and arrangement have created a fitting ode to the instrument.

2020 - whose idea was that then? Still, we're almost through and we've realised it is possible to release enough albums during a global pandemic to shake a critically acclaimed end-of-year roundup stick at. You just don't really know when your vinyl will land. This is your Year In Leaf.

Thanks to everyone who supported our artists and releases. When the going gets tough you recognise how resourceful and supportive the music community is. Same again next year, but less pestilence?

We started the year like a freight train with two albums in two weeks at the beginning of January. We didn''t quite manage to keep that output up over the year, but as Resident so eloquently pointed out, Craven Faults'' debut album became the perfect soundtrack to a year in which time ceased to have any meaning. These longform analogue synthesiser meditations seem to have connected with people on a primal level, with Norman Records particularly drawn to the Yorkshire landscapes it evokes.

After that initial flurry of release activity, our next album didn''t arrive until June. We''re pretty sure nothing particularly newsworthy occurred in the intervening months. I guess we''ll never know. On Nightports'' second album for Leaf, they enlisted the formidable talents of drummer and percussionist Betamax of The Comet Is Coming. There is the energy and dynamics you''d expect from an album built around the drum kit, but also a keen sense of melody and musicality.

Summer 2020 was all about the drums. Laurence Pike''s third solo album in as many years was developed over a four week period and recorded ''as live'' on drum kit and sampler in a single day, with the ominous backdrop of Australia''s catastrophic wild fires darkening the Sydney skies.

Our final full-length of the year arrived last month. Almost. Domenique Dumont''s exquisite People On Sunday album is out now on CD and digital services. With 2020 being 2020, the vinyl has been delayed until January 2021.

Like Dumont's earlier albums, the celebrated Comme ?a (2015) and Miniatures De Auto Rhythm (2018 - both for the Antinote label), People On Sunday evokes a more innocent, carefree time conjured by wistful electronics full of warmth and melody. The perfect tonic for a fraught year.

We're delighted to welcome a new signing with considerable pedigree to the Leaf stable. Domenique Dumont, whose hazy exotica albums Comme ?a and Miniatures De Auto Rhythm you may already be familiar with, is the thoroughbred in question. Released on Parisian electronic label Antinote, the records have garnered something of a cult following, and are well worth investigating if you haven't done so already.

Dumont's third album - his first for Leaf - is entitled People On Sunday, an original soundtrack commissioned to accompany the 1930 silent film variously known as Menschen am Sonntag, Les Hommes le Dimanche and People On Sunday. The film is a key work of interwar German cinema, based on a screenplay by Billy Wilder. Drawing on Dumont's love of classical music, library music and early electronic experimentation to create a timeless sound, the album evokes a more innocent, carefree era conjured by wistful electronics full of warmth and melody.

"The film shows people and their surroundings shortly before all of it was destroyed," says Dumont, who has previously composed for film. "Ironically, watching this movie with the eyes of today, it looks more surreal than documentary. And I can't help but think and reflect about the times we are living in now. We might have similar desires people had a hundred years ago, but we now have a completely different approach to life."

The title track is accompanied by a video featuring excerpts from the film.

People On Sunday will be released on various formats, including limited edition white vinyl LP (from independent shops only), black vinyl LP and limited edition CD. There is also a super limited edition silver vinyl LP available via Bleep and Bandcamp only. Pre-order here.

Snapped Ankles will play their biggest show yet, at the Roundhouse in Camden for Halloween 2021. It follows two sold out 'Vorticity of Sound' shows at Village Underground in 2019, which saw the woodwose conduct a swirling, live, audio visual, surround sound, high-wire act with a crack team of Satellite Ankles. The Snaps are playing their cards close their hairy chests, but expect the iconic Roundhouse to be transformed into a haunted forest of sound and light. They've also been hinting at new music on the way.

Listen to Domenique Dumont's 'Sunshine In 1929', the second track taken from the forthcoming People On Sunday album, an aural pickup for those craving some vitamin D.

The album was conceived as a soundtrack to the German silent film Menschen am Sonntag/Les Hommes le Dimanche, which was shot in 1929. "This theme was made to accompany a scene in the film where four daytrippers along with many other Berliners spend their time at the lake, lying in the sun, swimming, having a picnic and playing records on a portable gramophone," Dumont explains.

People On Sunday will be released November 13th. A super limited edition silver vinyl LP (300 copies) is available exclusively on Bandcamp and Bleep. A limited edition white vinyl LP (from independent shops only), black vinyl LP and limited edition CD are also available. Pre-order here.
