New In Mental Health News
This app matches marginalized communities to therapists who share their background (Fast Company)
"It was a cry for help that inspired entrepreneur Eric Coly to launch his startup. The former investment banker was approached by a close friend who confided to him that she needed counseling, but she couldn’t find a therapist. Or more specifically, she couldn’t find an African-American therapist. She wanted someone who could understand her experience as a woman of color." Read more.
Reaching out: How caring letters help in suicide prevention (CBS News)
"By most accounts Kevin Hines shouldn't be alive; at age 19 he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. "I remember the fall vividly," he told correspondent Lee Cowan. "Twenty-five stories, 75 miles an hour, four seconds." Although the fall shattered his back, he survived. He had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17, but on that day in September of 2000, it just all became too much." Read more.
The dialogue on mental health needs concrete solutions (The DP)
"My first year at Penn, I noticed many flaws in the mental health system here at Penn — all flaws that initially hindered me from getting proper and necessary treatment. Many other Penn students have had similar experiences, alleging various flaws in our mental healthcare system. We often address the stigma around mental health and share mental health resources in an effort to combat this. While this is helpful, it is by no means the complete solution." Read more.
What young people can teach world leaders about mental health in 2020 (World Economic Forum)
"The global movement to tackle the mental health crisis gained significant momentum in 2019. Leading this movement are young people from all over the world, themselves experts by experience of all types of mental ill-health. With 75% of mental health challenges starting in adolescence, the need for investment in youth mental health treatment, services and support is stark." Read more.
Are you reading our January Book Club selection?
We are kicking off 2020 with Cal Newport's New York Times bestselling book, Digital Minimalism. This Is My Brave Director and Founder Jennifer Marshall recently read Newport's book and shares her thoughts in this new post on our blog.
Read Jenn's Blog Post About Digital Minimalism
From the publisher: "Digital minimalists are all around us. They’re the calm, happy people who can hold long conversations without furtive glances at their phones. They can get lost in a good book, a woodworking project, or a leisurely morning run. They can have fun with friends and family without the obsessive urge to document the experience."
