City in focus: Los Angeles |
 |
Last year, LA came fifth in our global Time Out Index, where we asked 34,000 people all over the world to tell us about life in their city. It turns out that some of the stereotypes are true, but we’ll gladly own up to them: Angelenos are happy, mindfulness-practising residents of a blossoming city that the majority describe as diverse, dynamic and creative. We’ll credit a hearty slice of that to a tremendous food scene that has only recently caught the world’s attention, but which Angelenos have always been hungry to explore – after all, this city dines out more than the residents of any other in the US. |

Need somewhere to stay? |
 |
The Hollywood Roosevelt is an opulent four-star hotel surrounded by palm trees and resplendent with Golden Age glamor.
Why go?
The Roosevelt is no ordinary hotel. It's the oldest continually operating hotel in LA, having had various owners and makeovers since it opened in May 1927 (including a seafoam green paint-job that was mercifully returned to crisp white in the ’80s). The glorious blend of Spanish Colonial Revival and elegant MCM architecture has wowed guests throughout history, including a few famous faces. Marilyn Monroe spent two years living in the suite that's now named after her, the penthouse was regularly frequented by Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, and Prince played half a dozen performances here. In fact, it's difficult not to become
enamored by the place.
Once you tear your gaze away from the elaborate vintage tiles of the Blossom Ballroom (which happened to host the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929) or the squiggly David Hockney art at the bottom of the pool, you can appreciate the plethora of amenities on offer. There are five bars and restaurants, including a ’60s-style poolside cafe (Tropicana), prohibition era cocktail lounge (The Spare Room), and 24-hour burger bar (25 Degrees). Plus, there’s a gym, swim club and two types of accommodation: ’50s-style Cabanas with private patios beside the pool, and sleek Tower apartments in the 12-story main building, with canopy beds and hardwood floors.
Time Out tip
Indulge in R&R in the Massage Garden, a secluded oasis open 9am-9pm daily. Surrounded by billowing white drapes and lush greenery, you can enjoy a 60-90-minute deep tissue, Swedish or Shiatsu massage. Alternatively, you can order a massage direct to your room. |

What's the neighbourhood like? |
 | |
Located on Hollywood Boulevard, sandwiched between the main intersections of La Brea Ave and Highland Ave, the Roosevelt is perfectly placed for easy access to dozens of restaurants and attractions along the strip. Just a block away you can hop on the Red Line at Hollywood/Highland station, which will get you all the way up to Universal Studios and North Hollywood or down to Chinatown. |
 |
What's nearby? |
 | |
With a vintage bowling alley and regular comedy, jazz and magic shows in-house, you could easily spend your entire stay within the Roosevelt. But venture out and you'll be spitting distance from major attractions—literally in the case of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which passes the entrance. Across the street is the renowned TCL Chinese Theater, home to one of America's largest IMAX screens.

Ace Los Angeles |
 | |
Always ones to make a statement, the Ace group doesn't disappoint with their LA spot. Not only is it in a 13-story Art Deco beauty—with a breathtaking Spanish Gothic theater—but it’s filled with the rock 'n' roll charm so redolent of Ace hotels. Vinyl in the giftshop? Check. Acoustic guitars in the rooms? You betcha. Rooftop pool to look like a rock star by? Hell yes. Other places to explore include the restaurant, cocktail bar and coffeeshop, or at one of the many live music and DJ nights. |

Malibu Beach Inn |
 | |
Get out of the city and onto the beach, quite literally, at the Malibu Beach Inn, which perches right on the sand. Needless to say, views are incomparable and you won't be short of them, as each room comes with an ocean-facing balcony. Decor is minimal and fresh, with splashes of Pacific blue. Guests can enjoy the spa, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and the hotel's private stretch of beach, which is particularly excellent for surfers.
