The Connecticut Roundtable on Climate and Jobs (CRCJ) seeks a dynamic and passionate Executive Director and Lead Organizer who will take this innovative nonprofit to its next level. The new leader will replace the founding Executive Director, who has successfully led the organization since 2012.

The CRCJ builds alliances among diverse constituencies to combat climate change, create jobs and promote racial, economic and environmental justice. CRCJ embraces diversity as a source of power and engages in collective action to ensure that Connecticut provides leadership in creating a clean energy future. CRCJ's core constituencies are labor organizations, environmental groups and people of faith.

The PLAN team is seeking a new Co-Executive Director to help lead the next chapter of the organization. This person will have exceptional skills in collaborative leadership and project management (including quantitative analysis), as well as leadership experience in social and environmental justice spaces. We are not limiting our search to expect a 'fully formed' director with advanced technical expertise (e.g., budget management, fundraising, etc.); rather, ideal candidates will demonstrate strong fundamentals including an aptitude for continuous learning and growth.

PLAN was started in 2013 by recent college graduates to help other students run campus move-out projects that reduce waste and earn money. Since then, the organization has grown to national reach and a $500,000 annual budget, focusing on building and supporting student leadership in the movement toward zero waste and against the Linear Consumption Economy.

The Learning Lab Response to COVID-19

Dear Learning Lab Subscribers,

We hope this finds you safe and healthy.

Thank you for your interest in the Learning Lab, our strategic initiative dedicated to understanding the unique capacity-building needs of under-resourced movements, coalitions, community-based organizations, and other nonprofit groups serving marginalized communities.

As we navigate these difficult times, it is essential that we remain resolute in strengthening the capacities of the grassroots groups who are working tirelessly to strengthen vulnerable communities. TSNE remains committed to continuing the Learning Lab as a means to support those we serve. We are in the process of conducting a case-study of peer organizations to learn their best practices, piloting innovative capacity-building supports, as well as continuing to share our resources and key learnings with the sector.

In accordance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts'' reopening plan, the NonProfit Center, and The Link will be reopen for tenants beginning on June 15 with health and safety policies being implemented. TSNE's staff will continue to work remotely to provide needed services to the organizations we serve.

During this challenging time, we will be sending our monthly newsletters every other week to share resources, knowledge, and support to the nonprofit community.

Best Practices for Reopening Your Workplace

As cities and states across the country begin lifting stay-at-home restrictions, organizations are left to create policies and procedures for reopening their office spaces in a safe and responsible way.

COVID-19 Human Resources Technical Assistance is Now Available

TSNE is thrilled to begin offering COVID-19 related human resources technical assistance around the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) or HR-related issues that pertain to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

Our team is still offering technical assistance to organizations interested in applying for PPP loans and we will soon add assistance for navigating PPP forgiveness.

Boston nonprofit Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4NI) has just released their new book online at their website. Ideas-Arrangements-Effects invite organizations involved in social justice and activism to explore their roles as "world builders" and how arrangements can be reorganized to create more equitable systems.

[Study] Nonprofits Led by People of Color Win Less Grant Money with More Strings
Organizations led by people of color win less grant money and are trusted less to make decisions about how to spend those funds than groups with white leaders, according to a new report by the consultancy Bridgespan and Echoing Green, an organization that invests in and provides support for leaders of emerging social enterprises.

Registration is Open for the Girls on the Run Virtual 5k
Saturday, June 6 - Sunday, June 21
Girls on the Run has made their annual 5k race a virtual experience! This event will raise critical funds to sustain Girls on the Run so they can continue to bring transformative programming to girls ages 8-13 throughout greater Boston in the aftermath of COVID-19. All participants will receive a virtual "swag bag" including a printable bib, a printable finisher certificate, a 10-week training plan, a digital Facebook Frame, a Pump Up Playlist, and more.

TSNE''s Coronavirus Response and NPC Enhanced Cleaning Efforts

TSNE, the owner and operator of the NonProfit Center would like to share our ongoing response to COVID-19 and provide our newsletter subscribers with helpful resources for nonprofits in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, and beyond. TSNE will continue to update the response and resource list on our website as this situation continues to evolve.

As we are all aware, the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 disease has been steadily spreading in the United States. We have been monitoring any and all recommendations and communications from the CDC, the City of Boston, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to inform our plan of action, while also taking steps to ensure that we are doing all we can to reduce chances of disease transmission at TSNE.

TSNE is following the official recommendations to discontinue non-essential work travel and cancel discretionary meetings. On March 15, Governor Baker asked that all meetings and events with more than 25 people in attendance be cancelled. With this in mind we have postponed our March Better Nonprofit Management Training Series workshop Strategic Magic: Seeing Through the Blind Spots to June 17. We have also cancelled all April BNM workshops with the intention of rescheduling them on a later date.

TSNE also owns and operates the NonProfit Center, and at this time we have decided to close the building to the public with the intent to re-open on Monday, April 6.

Organizations that operate within the NonProfit Center have been encouraged to implement work from home policies, however, the building will remain accessible to them. All events scheduled to be held at the NonProfit Center during the time period between March 16 - April 6 have been cancelled. While the building is closed, our facilities team will continue to practice enhanced cleaning procedures detailed below.

NonProfit Center Enhanced Cleaning Procedures

We are taking the following measures to reduce chances of transmission:

Increasing the water temperatures in our restrooms and kitchens
Keeping all hand sanitization stations in the building stocked
Stepping up our cleaning efforts both during the days and in the evenings, with special attention given to surfaces that are frequently touched (doorknobs, elevator buttons, etc.)
Engaging our cleaning vendor to conduct weekly thorough, deep cleanings at the NPC every Friday evening
Installing reminders in all restrooms for tenants and visitors to wash their hands
We have ordered and will install NanoSeptic elevator button and door knob covers throughout our common areas

Using Co-Design to Better Center Equity in Our Work with Our Clients and Grantee Partners

In November, TSNE and the Social Sector Accelerator hosted two virtual design sessions to demonstrate how authentic co-design, also known as participatory design, is an inclusive process for effectively responding to the emerging needs of communities. Nearly 80 grantmakers, capacity builders, and consultants across the country attended our sessions of Design Labs: Using Co-Design to Center Equity in Our Work.

What You Need to Know

In accordance with Massachusetts Governor Baker''s stay-at-home advisory TSNE and the NonProfit Center are currently closed. TSNE's staff are working remotely to continue to provide needed services to the organizations we serve.

During this challenging time, we will be sending our monthly newsletters every other week to share resources, knowledge, and support to the nonprofit community.

At this time, our Better Nonprofit Management Training Series workshops taking place in May have not been canceled. We are monitoring the situation and will inform registrants of any changes.

What Nonprofits Need to Know About the CARES Act

On Friday, March 27 Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The Small Business Association's section of the CARES Act applies to nonprofits, with an allocation of $350 billion dollars to keep workers at small businesses and nonprofits employed amid the economic downturn and the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the size and scope of this unprecedented Federal Aid package, there is a lot of information to unpack.

What we do know is the CARES Act will provide a forgivable loan called the Paycheck Protection Program 7(a). Highlights of this loan program include:

Loans to nonprofits with fewer than 500 employees in order to cover basic costs and keep staff employed through the crisis;
Loans can be applied to payroll, health benefits, paid sick and family leave, mortgage interest, rent, utilities and debt interest;
Loan amount is calculated by a formula based on the average total of monthly payroll in the prior year
Loans do NOT cover employees making over $100,000/yr, and with principal residences outside of the United States.
This loan will be eligible for "forgiveness," essentially turning into grants if they are used for the purposes as outlined as long as certain other conditions regarding maintaining employment levels in accordance with the law are met.
A sample application is available on the Small Business Administration website;
Nonprofits should apply through their local bank;
Applications will start being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Friday, April 3

NonProfit Center Closure and Updates

In accordance with Massachusetts Governor Baker''s stay-at-home advisory the NonProfit Center is currently closed. We are doing our part to flatten the curve, practice physical distancing, and continuing our enhanced cleaning efforts to ensure the health and safety of our staff and community.

During this challenging time, we will be sending our monthly newsletters every two weeks to share resources, knowledge, and support to the nonprofit community.

Urgent Information for Nonprofits Applying for the CARES Act

In our last newsletter, we shared what we knew about the CARES Act that was passed by Congress in March. Since then, much has changed and applications for the Paycheck Protection Program have started being accepted by banks across the country. The rollout of the application process has been rocky, but we wanted to share more of what TSNE knows about the application process.

The Role of Human Resources During the COVID-19 Crisis

Contact Tracers Needed in Massachusetts

On April 3, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, announced an agreement with Partners in Health to establish the Contact Tracing Collaborative. Partners in Health is globally recognized for their work on pandemic mitigation. GattiHR has been retained to provide recruiting and training support for this initiative, starting with an initial cohort of up to 1,000 Contact Tracers. They need to have this initial cohort in place a rapidly as possible.

In accordance with Massachusetts Governor Baker''s stay-at-home advisory, (now extended through May 18) TSNE, the NonProfit Center, and The Link are currently closed. TSNE's staff are working remotely to continue to provide needed services to the organizations we serve.

Paycheck Protection Program: Round 2

On Thursday, April 23, Congress passed a bill providing an additional $310 billion in funding to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) created to keep workers at small businesses and nonprofits employed amid the economic downturn and the COVID-19 pandemic. Banks began accepting applications for the second round of funding on Monday, April 27. Read about urgent information about the application process for nonprofits.

New Reports from the Learning Lab
The Learning Lab, in partnership with the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools at New York University, has released two unique reports assessing the capacity building needs, challenges, and best practices for movements, coalitions, and other nonprofit groups.

The Field Scan identifies the findings of of 11 organizations that provide capacity building and/or fiscal sponsorship for traditionally structured and alternatively structured nonprofit organizations.

The Literature Review synthesizes literature from academic journals, reports commissioned by foundations and philanthropic organizations, and news articles to identify the needs of alternatively structured nonprofits.

Governor Baker Signs Eviction and Foreclosure Moratorium into Law
On April 20, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed the Eviction and Foreclosure Moratorium, halting landlords from filing eviction cases for the next four months or until 45 days after the coronavirus state of emergency is lifted. The law also protects homeowners and small businesses. Many nonprofit organizations from across the Commonwealth were behind the push for this law including our partners at the Massachusetts Public Health Association's Emergency Task Force on Coronavirus and Equity and City Life/Vida Urbana.

Lenny Zakim Fund Announces COVID-19 Emergency Response and Recovery Fund
The Lenny Zakim Fund has established the COVID-19 Emergency Response and Recovery Fund to provide both immediate and long-term relief to nonprofits advancing social, racial, and economic justice in their communities. Click here to learn more.

[Op-Ed] The Crises Our Families Face Every Day
Imari Paris Jeffries, executive director of Parenting Journey, and Julia Mejia, city councilor at-large for the city of Boston, wrote an opinion piece that highlights the health and economic inequities felt by poor and working class communities in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. Design Lab: Using Co-Design to Center Equity in Our Work

Roll up your sleeves and try out tools for participatory and human-centered design.

In this virtual design session we will elevate participatory design and audit our own capacity building practice with an equity lens as a "both/and" opportunity. By rolling up our sleeves and exploring a range of dynamic and interactive participatory design tools, participants will:

Try out a range of tools to support a more inclusive and participatory approach to designing and implementing capacity building programs
Shine a light on our own practice and identify specific places to choose a more equity-informed practice
Learn from and deepen connections with values-aligned peers who are committed to strengthening their equity-informed practice

This design session is open to individuals working in the philanthropy, capacity building, and fiscal sponsor fields.

Empowering with Participatory Design

Grantmakers, capacity builders, and fiscal sponsors can use participatory design to rapidly design and provide adaptive capacity building supports to better meet the emerging needs of the organizations and communities we support. Participatory design, also known as co-design, empowers us to meet these urgent needs by creating inclusive spaces, leveraging the rich and collective knowledge of those impacted by our work, and ensuring that we are providing relevant and useful support.

Two New In-Depth Reports Examine Best Practices for Addressing Needs of Under-Resourced Groups

We are thrilled to provide the following newly released reports that will guide the Lab''s ongoing work.

Our in-depth Field Scan and Literature Review, created in partnership with the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools at New York University, address the capacity building needs, challenges, and best practices for under-resourced movements, coalitions, and other nonprofit groups.

The Field Scan looks at best practices for serving under-resourced organizations through interviews with 11 capacity-building and/or fiscal sponsor organizations across the country.

The Literature Review provides an analysis of best practices highlighted in academic journals, reports commissioned by foundations and philanthropic organizations, and news articles to answer the question:What are the needs, challenges, and best practices for building capacity with alternatively structured nonprofit groups?

March/April 2020

Our email yesterday had broken links in the Resources for Nonprofits section. Those links have been fixed here.

In lieu of our usual newsletter, TSNE would like to share our ongoing response to COVID-19 and provide our subscribers with helpful resources for nonprofits in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, and beyond. TSNE will continue to update the response and resource list on our website as this situation continues to evolve.

TSNE''s Coronavirus Response and NPC Enhanced Cleaning Efforts

As we are all aware, the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 disease has been steadily spreading in the United States. We have been monitoring any and all recommendations and communications from the CDC, the City of Boston, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to inform our plan of action, while also taking steps to ensure that we are doing all we can to reduce chances of disease transmission at TSNE.

TSNE is following the official recommendations to discontinue non-essential work travel and cancel discretionary meetings. On March 15, Governor Baker asked that all meetings and events with more than 25 people in attendance be cancelled. With this in mind we have postponed our March Better Nonprofit Management Training Series workshop Strategic Magic: Seeing Through the Blind Spots to June 17. We have also cancelled all April BNM workshops with the intention of rescheduling them on a later date.

TSNE also owns and operates the NonProfit Center, and at this time we have decided to close the building to the public with the intent to re-open on Monday, April 6.

Organizations that operate within the NonProfit Center have been encouraged to implement work from home policies, however, the building will remain accessible to them. All events scheduled to be held at the NonProfit Center during the time period between March 16 - April 6 have been cancelled. While the building is closed, our facilities team will continue to practice enhanced cleaning procedures detailed below.

NonProfit Center Enhanced Cleaning Procedures

We are taking the following measures to reduce chances of transmission:

Increasing the water temperatures in our restrooms and kitchens
Keeping all hand sanitization stations in the building stocked
Stepping up our cleaning efforts both during the days and in the evenings, with special attention given to surfaces that are frequently touched (doorknobs, elevator buttons, etc.)
Engaging our cleaning vendor to conduct weekly thorough, deep cleanings at the NPC every Friday evening
Installing reminders in all restrooms for tenants and visitors to wash their hands
We have ordered and will install NanoSeptic elevator button and door knob covers throughout our common areas

In accordance with Massachusetts Governor Baker''s stay-at-home advisory, (now extended through May 18) TSNE, the NonProfit Center, and The Link are currently closed. TSNE's staff are working remotely to continue to provide needed services to the organizations we serve.

During this challenging time, we will be sending our monthly newsletters every other week to share resources, knowledge, and support to the nonprofit community.

Creating an Emergency Response Team

When the COVID-19 crisis hit, one of the first steps TSNE took was to create an emergency response team. This team was responsible for tackling COVID-specific policies, procedures, and communications during the course of the crisis. Haymarket People's Fund Offering Urgent Response Grants
Application Deadline: Friday, May 15
Haymarket People's Fund has received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to redistribute to grassroots groups across New England responding to the COVID-19 public health crisis and the health inequities it has amplified. Grants range from $5,000-$15,000 and they are prioritizing work being led by and taking place in communities of color across New England.

Saturday, June 6 - Sunday, June 21
Girls on the Run has made their annual 5k race a virtual experience! This event will raise critical funds to sustain Girls on the Run so they can continue to bring transformative programming to girls ages 8-13 throughout greater Boston in the aftermath of COVID-19. The Learning Lab helps capacity-builders, fiscal sponsors, and funders rapidly and effectively respond to the emerging needs of communities. It disrupts traditional methods of "community engagement" and "project planning" by creating inclusive spaces for our constituents to efficiently co-design and actionize effective solutions.

Introducing the Four Peer Organizations of Our Upcoming Learning Lab Case Studies

CultureWorks of Greater Philadelphia, the Foraker Group, Movement Strategy Center, and Urban Affairs Coalition: these four fiscal sponsors and capacity-builders are using diverse, innovative, and evolving practices to support grassroots groups working to transform their communities. We conducted case studies of each in order to generate more in-depth learnings and identify emerging best practices.

The Learning Lab will preview these learnings and emerging best practices from the field in November. Learn more about each organization and visit their websites.

What Nonprofits Needs to Know About the CARES Act

On Friday, March 27 Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The Small Business Association's section of the CARES Act applies to nonprofits, with an allocation of $350 billion dollars to keep workers at small businesses and nonprofits employed amid the economic downturn and the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the size and scope of this unprecedented Federal Aid package, there is a lot of information to unpack.

What we do know is the CARES Act will provide a forgivable loan called the Paycheck Protection Program 7(a). Highlights of this loan program include:

Loans to nonprofits with fewer than 500 employees in order to cover basic costs and keep staff employed through the crisis;
Loans can be applied to payroll, health benefits, paid sick and family leave, mortgage interest, rent, utilities and debt interest;
Loan amount is calculated by a formula based on the average total of monthly payroll in the prior year
Loans do NOT cover employees making over $100,000/yr, and with principal residences outside of the United States.
This loan will be eligible for "forgiveness," essentially turning into grants if they are used for the purposes as outlined as long as certain other conditions regarding maintaining employment levels in accordance with the law are met.
A sample application is available on the Small Business Administration website.
Nonprofits should apply through their local bank.
Applications will start being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis starting Friday, April 3.

In accordance with Massachusetts Governor Baker''s stay-at-home advisory the NonProfit Center is currently closed. We are doing our part to flatten the curve, practice physical distancing, and continuing our enhanced cleaning efforts to ensure the health and safety of our staff and community.

During this challenging time, we will be sending our monthly newsletters every two weeks to share resources, knowledge, and support to the nonprofit community.

In lieu of our usual Trainings Newsletter, TSNE would like to share our ongoing response to COVID-19 and provide our newsletter subscribers with helpful resources for nonprofits in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, and beyond. TSNE will continue to update the response and resource list on our website as this situation continues to evolve.

TSNE''s Coronavirus Response and NPC Enhanced Cleaning Efforts

As we are all aware, the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 disease has been steadily spreading in the United States. We have been monitoring any and all recommendations and communications from the CDC, the City of Boston, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to inform our plan of action, while also taking steps to ensure that we are doing all we can to reduce chances of disease transmission at TSNE.

TSNE is following the official recommendations to discontinue non-essential work travel and cancel discretionary meetings. On March 15, Governor Baker asked that all meetings and events with more than 25 people in attendance be cancelled. With this in mind we have:

Postponed our March 24 Better Nonprofit Management Training Series workshop Strategic Magic: Seeing Through the Blind Spots to June 17
Cancelled all April BNM workshops with the intention of rescheduling them on a later date

TSNE also owns and operates the NonProfit Center, and at this time we have decided to close the building to the public with the intent to re-open on Monday, April 6.

Organizations that operate within the NonProfit Center have been encouraged to implement work from home policies, however, the building will remain accessible to them. All events scheduled to be held at the NonProfit Center during the time period between March 16 - April 6 have been cancelled. While the building is closed, our facilities team will continue to practice enhanced cleaning procedures detailed below.

NonProfit Center Enhanced Cleaning Procedures

We are taking the following measures to reduce chances of transmission:

Increasing the water temperatures in our restrooms and kitchens
Keeping all hand sanitization stations in the building stocked
Stepping up our cleaning efforts both during the days and in the evenings, with special attention given to surfaces that are frequently touched (doorknobs, elevator buttons, etc.)
Engaging our cleaning vendor to conduct weekly thorough, deep cleanings at the NPC every Friday evening
Installing reminders in all restrooms for tenants and visitors to wash their hands
We have ordered and will install NanoSeptic elevator button and door knob covers throughout our common areas

Urgent Information for Nonprofits Applying for the CARES Act

Contact Tracers Needed in Massachusetts

On April 3, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, announced an agreement with Partners in Health to establish the Contact Tracing Collaborative. Partners in Health is globally recognized for their work on pandemic mitigation. GattiHR has been retained to provide recruiting and training support for this initiative, starting with an initial cohort of up to 1,000 Contact Tracers. They need to have this initial cohort in place a rapidly as possible.

A Statement from TSNE Regarding the Riots at the United States Capitol

Yesterday, we witnessed the outcome of the hatred, vitriol, dogma, lies and conspiracy theories espoused by elected officials charged with the sacred duty of leading our country and who are sworn to uphold and defend our Constitution and democracy. The attempt to incite a riot to overturn the result of a free and fair election is a shameful and seditious act, reminiscent of dictators and demagogues.

Since its founding, the United States has sought to be a beacon of freedom and democracy for the world. Throughout its history, immigrants and refugees have made the often life-threatening journey to our shores in order to seek refuge, safety, freedom, and a life free from fear and persecution. My family is no different. And while our democracy and our nation is far from perfect, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color continue to fight and struggle for basic human rights on a daily basis, our nation rests on the premise that every time we cast a vote, that vote will be counted, and the will of the people to select our leaders will be carried out. Yesterday's violence was an attempt to nullify those rights and our collective voice, reflecting the fear and anger of white supremacists who are fast becoming a small but dangerous minority in our country.

But we cannot let white supremacy and hatred win. We must continue to vote, organize, and protest to demand our rights, and create the country that we want to live in. TSNE's mission is to build a more just and equitable society, but justice and equity are rarely given freely. Yesterday's insurrection is evidence that our democracy can be fragile, and that our collective work is critical and urgent now, more than ever. Thank you for your part in making us a better nation and together we can, and must, create a more just and equitable society.
