The Trust, Transparency and Control Labs turns four!

A journey through our work so far..

Developing creative design solutions to inform people about their data and privacy choices is at the heart of what we do at TTC Labs. Since we were last in touch, our work at TTC Labs has evolved to include more collaboration, new tools and whitepapers.

Before the world went into lockdown, we hosted Design Jams and ran workshops in Amsterdam, Bangalore and New Delhi. As with so many other events, the restrictions meant we had to move our summer Design Jams online, but that didn't stop us working with stakeholders in Brazil, Europe and Africa on designing for young people.

We are excited to share a bit more about our work with you on the following topics:

Designing transparency for all 

We appreciate the responsibility we all have to make sure users understand how their data is being used, stored and collected. We believe people-centred, accountable design will create more effective privacy policies for users and developers alike. 

The insights we have gathered from the past four years around designing transparency fed into Facebook's most recent WhitePaper on Communicating About Privacy: Towards people-centered and accountable design, launched in July. Designing for young people 

Bringing privacy and data to life 

2020 also marks the launch of a series of interactive Lenses we've created, that walk people through various privacy concepts. Our aim is to demonstrate how design solutions can make complex privacy issues easier to understand. 

Supporting startups 

Since we were last in contact, we've taken part in the second season of the Facebook Startup Accelerator programme, which is a unique collaboration between Facebook, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Craig Walker Design and Innovation Studio. The six-month programme aims to support and empower innovative, data-driven startups across Asia Pacific. TTC Labs' workstream was focused on helping the startups to design notification and consent flows. This recent blog explores in more detail the challenges they faced and the impressive prototypes they created.

We are seeking a highly motivated, well organised, team player to join the TTC Labs team at Facebook. We are looking to recruit a Data Policy Manager with a diverse skill set who can conceptualise and manage cross-functional programmes focussing on UX and systems design, tech policy, data innovation and the future of the data-driven economy globally. As this challenging year draws to a close, we wanted to share one final update on the work we''ve been undertaking at TTC Labs, from our Leveraging Context in Design Lens to a new Digital Discovery Exercise. 

Looking ahead to 2021 we are excited to have started planning our TTC Labs Virtual Summit, due to take place in April, where we hope to bring together our partners and community to share insights and learnings from the last year in the areas of designing empowering digital experiences for young people and transparency in digital services. Look out for our invite which is due to land in your inboxes early next year.

Leveraging Context in Design

Trust is at the heart of the work we undertake at TTC Labs. With trust it is possible to provide a streamlined experience that creates a greater understanding of privacy and data. This is why we are delighted to share our latest Lens, Leveraging Context in Design, with you!

Each of our lenses walk people through various privacy concepts and demonstrate how good design can create privacy-focused user experiences. Our "Leveraging Context in Design" Lens explores what it means to share data disclosures with users at three different points in their journey - Up Front, In-Context, and On-Demand. Each of these approaches have their merits, but we believe that providing relevant information throughout the user journey (i.e. in-context) is often the most effective and transparent approach. TTC Labs sponsors IxDA 2021 Student Design Charette

We''re committed to helping the next generation of digital designers understand the privacy ecosystem, so we are proud to say that we are sponsoring the IxDA 2021 Student Design Charette! The Student Design Charette (SDC) champions emerging interaction designers and exists to promote design for good. To do this, SDC brings together students and early professionals to tackle big challenges. 

For this year''s challenge, we''ve asked the students to respond to the following brief - 

"In order to advance public health around the globe on issues from diabetes and heart health to tackling Covid-19, we need data. How might we design a system or service which gives users confidence that their health data is being protected, so that they feel in control and happy to share it for public good?"

This year the SDC is taking place online, giving students from around the world the chance to work together for a longer period. Find out more about the 2021 SDC and keep up to date with it on social media.
