'Was there life on Mars?'

Backed by the UK Space Agency, researchers at Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum will help the NASA Perseverance rover select Martian rock and soil samples to be brought back from the red planet as it searches for evidence of ancient microbial life. Read more here

Astronomy Inspired Art Competition

The competition is open to everyone; there are 4 age categories and you can submit as many entries as you like. Your art work can take on any form but should be inspired by our University of Southampton research into the ‘Life Cycle of Stars’, Supernova and Dark Energy. Submit your work online using the hashtag #SotonAstroArt or email it to us. Don’t forget to include your age and location.

Satellite Design Competition
 On Saturday 8th August, the final 3 remaining teams from the Univesity of Glasgow, Cranfield University and the Open University will be presenting their work. The students and spent the past year designing a nanosatellite payload system for an analogue lunar mission and their work will be reviewed by members of industry (SSPI and Open Cosmos).

The event will be livestreamed from 4pm. Join us to celebrate the teams' work, and to learn more about CubeSats and the challenges associated with lunar missions, with the opportunity to ask questions directly to the teams!

 
Olympus Rover Trials
On Saturday 15th August teams will be presenting their work for the competition. The Olympus Rover Trials challenges student teams across the UK to design, construct, and operate a rover for an analogue sample return mission to Mars.The competition is run in partnership with GMV, Thales Alenia Space, and RAL space, with Fairspace, Open Cosmos and Oxford Space Systems as sponsors and supporters.

The event will be recorded and posted on the UKSEDS Youtube Channel shortly afterwards.

We love the work we do with children up and down the country, so to make sure we can continue to bring our activities to you, we have made all our activities and resources available to the public.All of these activities can be completed at home with basic materials, come with full instructions, and the background science (if you want to make them educational). All-Female Crew Set For Mission to Mars Research Station in the US

The first all-female crew is headed to the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah next year! Including current Cranfield PhD student Marta Ferran Marques and alumna Cristina V. Reynel, the crew of engineers, geologists and scientists aims to fill the data gap on women’s performance in space exploration. Read more here.
Perseverance Rover- Mars
 
NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission cleared its Flight Readiness Review Wednesday, an important milestone on its way to the launch pad. The daily launch window was on Thursday, July 30, at 12:50 p.m. BST.
UKSEDS organised a watch party on its discord server for all members, to watch the event live.
A Star Has Been Sent Hurtling Across the Galaxy 
A star has been sent hurtling across the galaxy after undergoing a partial supernova, astronomers say. Astronomers think the object, known as a white dwarf, was originally circling another star, which would have been sent flying in the opposite direction.The object, known as SDSS J1240+6710, was previously found to have an unusual atmospheric composition. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-53415294
