In spite of generous donations from across the music industry and from music lovers, the Unison Benevolent Fund is struggling to stay afloat. We are in a crisis and Unison is moving into a crisis situation as an organization. To put this situation into perspective, the live music industry in Canada accounts for 72,000 jobs – not including performers – and generates $3.5 billion in economic activity, according to the Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA).

This year, more than ever, we have all relied on the comfort that music brings us, but without further financial support, we risk losing so many music-makers and industry workers behind the music we all love so much. We need your help and we need it now more than ever!

Unison Announces Emergency Mental Health Relief

GoFundMe Campaign to Aid Music Workers

in Response to COVID-19 Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused increased mental health hardship for many employed in the Canadian music industry including artists, crew, behind the scenes support teams and more. Countless individuals in the music community were the first to lose their livelihood, and the entertainment industry will be one of the last to recover.

During a crisis, mental illness doesn’t simply go away and for many, the increased stressors only make it worse. In 2020, Unison has seen a 29% increase in demand for counselling services, and a 61% increase in urgent mental health crisis intervention cases.

At Unison Benevolent Fund, we are committed to providing assistance to music industry professionals and their families – not just during the holidays, but throughout the year. We have more people seeking assistance with our mental health programs than ever before, but our resources are limited. We are dependent on the generosity of donors to continue to provide much-needed services to Canadian music makers who are need of assistance. For many, Unison has been their only source of emergency assistance. It is imperative that we continue this fund to provide this bridge of relief for as many music professionals as we can.

During this time of reflection, we ask you today to make a tax-deductible donation to support the work of Unison. No donation is too small; any amount will be greatly appreciated. Donating is easy. You can contribute to Unison Benevolent Fund’s registered GoFundMe, online.

Systemic racism and intersectional oppression disproportionately impact the mental well-being of Black and Indigenous People of Colour (BIPOC) in Canada every single day. We recognize that in mental health, there is a massive disparity in how BIPOC are not only listened to but supported on every level. We have been listening, we have been learning, and the time to address these inequities is now.

We continue to look within our own organization and focus on where we need to make the changes necessary to ensure that our commitment to equality remains at the forefront.

This commitment is a process, but as a starting point,

Unison is closely reviewing and examining what steps our counselling partner Morneau Shepell is taking to provide specialized counselling and health services for the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities
Unison is undergoing changes to our Board of Directors with an internal commitment towards a more diverse, inclusive and accurate representation of our communities
As Unison curates panels and discussions within the music community, we are dedicated to amplifying the voices of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities and creating a diverse and inclusive safe space at all times

Dear Jackson,

This year, we all had one thing in common: when things got tough, we relied on music to keep us going.

But for the many thousands of Canadian music-workers whose careers exist on a freelance, contract, or gig-by-gig basis, the start of the pandemic signalled the start of one of the most traumatic years on record as they faced not only months of empty calendars and decimated incomes, but also complete uncertainty about what the future will hold.

A new report, entitled ''The Impact of COVID-19 on Canadian Independent Music'', commissioned by the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) details just how deeply the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the Canadian independent music sector. Among the most shocking discoveries: the evaporation of the live music scene has led to a decline in revenue of $233 million in just six months. The live sector has taken the biggest hit during the pandemic, seeing a 79% drop in income from 2019. In a best-case scenario, it is expected that industry revenue will not recover to pre-COVID levels until 2023-2024.
