This has become our mantra, our motto, and our call to action.

Since the pandemic began in March, we have seen our community come together in ways we never imagined possible to support one another. From our volunteers donating their time to be on the frontlines to individuals and our corporate partners who have generously donated to meet the immediate needs of those who''ve been impacted most - we couldn''t be more grateful for you.

Together, we are defining the power of a Community United.

This summer, we also called on you to stand united with us against racial injustice. This year has shone a light on the many challenges we have been working to address in our community. It also propelled us to step up in new ways and to continue learning and evolving in order to break down systemic barriers. I invite you to read our full statement and learn more about our social justice and racial equity work.

This summer, we worked alongside Right On Mobile Education to bring the first ever mobile preschool to the City and County of Denver. This full-renovated airport shuttle turned classroom-on-wheels is providing access to early childhood education for families in Globeville and Elyria-Swansea.

We are outraged and sickened by the tragedies of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbury, and sadly so many others.

The last few weeks have been wrenching. Not only has COVID devastated the lives and livelihoods of millions, it has shown a harsh light on the divisions and cracks in our country that have always been present but often hidden away, or ignored, or swept under the rug. People of color face a daily fear caused by a history of racial inequality. And in the last few weeks, we have watched in horror and heartbreak, from New York to Minneapolis to our own city, the injustices and hatred and racism that has overtly and covertly reinforced systemic disparities between the privileged and under-privileged.

We have listened to the words of Denver’s Mayor Michael Hancock and have taken his statement to heart: “We still battle the disease of racism and hatred – and it must be us that stand united.” And we recognize that it will take action and it will take work.

To embody that statement, we stand united against the injustices and cruelty of systemic racism.

We stand united for the values of equal treatment and equal access to resources. We have seen how COVID has disproportionately impacted communities of color within our city. We have seen how poverty disproportionately impacts communities of color within our city, and we will continue our work to ensure that the basic rights and freedoms of everyone are protected. We will call on our Metro Denver community to stand united with us in creating economic opportunity for all.

For 133 years, Mile High United Way has been proud to steward our community’s collective generosity, and to bring voice to the most critical issues facing our community. These past few months have been no exception. What we have seen is unprecedented and has only highlighted the needs that affect our most vulnerable community members.

Now more than ever, we are placing a greater emphasis on under-resourced communities and a greater emphasis on supporting our youngest Coloradans and their parents. Our priority is on high-quality early care and education, parent/caregiver training and support, early learning and literacy, out -of-school time, and workforce development within the early childhood education field. We are also prioritizing emergency and basic needs, which are vital to so many individuals and families, especially today.

As our community changes around us more quickly than we could ever imagine, it is a privilege to unite with you to serve our most vulnerable citizens. Because of your support, we are proud to announce we are granting $4.5 million to 105 high-performing organizations who are delivering innovative programmatic work. Mile High United Way’s Strategic Investment Grants support organizations across the seven-county Denver-Boulder Metro area whose missions align with Mile High United Way’s Community Impact Goals. Grantees were determined through a rigorous selection process that included a panel of subject-matter experts, donors, business and community leaders, and Mile High United Way Trustees.

As we turn from response to recovery, we are grateful to have a community united with us to support our neighbors when they need it most. Together, we are creating a more vibrant and equitable community that offers the opportunity for everyone to succeed, no matter their zip code.

Whether remote or in the classroom, students will need supplies to make the most of their school year. The average back to school supply list can cost over $100 which isn''t feasible for many families in Metro Denver. That''s why?we''re teaming up with the Denver Broncos to make sure young people have the supplies they need to start the school year off strong.

It''s here, it’s here! Today is officially the first day of the Mile High United Way Turkey Trot! Normally we only get one day to celebrate – but this year, there are no rules, and we are celebrating all week long! I for one can’t wait to get out to my favorite trotting location to sport my Turkey Trot t-shirt and mask.

I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy.

Throughout the pandemic, Mile High United Way has remained the front-line response in helping our community access critical support. In March, once schools and businesses across the metro area closed, the number of people searching for services like rental and housing assistance, food, shelter, and childcare more than doubled. By early April, our 2-1-1 Help Center received close to 20,000 requests for help.

Thousands of residents in our most under-resourced neighborhoods are still struggling each day to meet their basic needs. We are providing immediate relief in these areas, but we cannot do this work without your support.

Rising to the Call

Here are some of the most pressing needs in neighborhoods that have been hit the hardest by the outbreak and how we''re responding:

Access to basic needs services:
- Hiring 20 additional 2-1-1 Help Line Navigators to answer calls from those needing help and to connect more people to critical resources.
- Engaging in wrap-around support through our Family Emergency Needs Initiative, placing more Community Navigators directly in neighborhoods to help navigate all the services that families may need in this crisis.
- Creating a safety net fund that Community Navigators can draw on to help families access food, medicine, and more.
- Providing emergency rapid response funding for 50 partner organizations targeted in these areas to deliver rent/utility assistance, food, health services, and more.

Access to childcare: 33% of childcare providers in Colorado say they would not survive closing for more than two weeks. We''re currently distributing grants to help providers stay open as well as health/safety supplies to 1,200 early childcare providers, so they can continue to have a healthy, safe, and enriching environment for young children.

Access to technology: 20% of households in Denver do not have broadband, and 42.7% of households making below $20,000 annually do not have an internet connection. We''re increasing access to technology for students through distributing laptops and online learning subscriptions as well as internet cost support for families.

The data is clear. The need for us to step up to support the most vulnerable among us is NOW. We are committed to assisting residents in our most under-resourced neighborhoods through this crisis, but we need your help. Please consider making a gift today.
