Witnessing genocide, taking action.
Responding to rights in crisis in Burma.
The struggle of the Rohingya and other minorities in Burma (Myanmar) has been described as a bellwether for how seriously we take our collective commitment to ending genocide - or if the international community will continue to look away. Burma is a multicultural country at the crossroads of Asia, home to over a hundred different ethnic groups, with a history marred by some of the world's longest running civil wars. In their pursuit of democracy, many ethnic and religious minorities have had their citizenship revoked and been stripped of their rights by the government. The state has systematically targeted them for abuse - from land seizures and forced labor to horrific violence, including mass slaughter of entire villages by Burmese military groups.

The roots of UUSC's partnerships in Burma go deep. This June marks 25 years of UUSC working to promote human rights and grassroots leadership in Burma. Over much of that time, the Burmese government has consistently sought to hamper the work of relief organizations and block the efforts of activists and democracy defenders. Yet, our networks of support have survived the challenges, and we are forging new partnerships and ways to build grassroots power.
What you should know
  • The 2017 Burmese military campaign against the Rohingya Muslim minority was unprecedented in its brutality, leading to the death of an untold number of innocent civilians and forcing over 700,000 to flee as refugees to Bangladesh, where they joined previous waves of refugees to form what has become the world's largest refugee camp, now home to nearly 1 million people.

  • A United Nations investigation has led the International Court of Justice to begin examining Burma's culpability in upholding its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention, representing a necessary step toward international justice and accountability.

  • Children represent approximately half of Rohingya refugees, and they have not been allowed to attend formal schooling since the creation of the camps in 2017, creating the prospect of a lost generation of an entire population.

  • With a camp-wide internet ban, Rohingya families also now face additional threats to their safety and well-being from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the inability to access public health information.
Burmese Rohingya Organisation United Kingdom
UUSC's Burma program supports Rohingya partners and allies to build a movement for equity, justice, and accountability. With our on-the-ground partnerships, we are addressing the immediate needs of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh camps and those who have fled to neighboring Malaysia. For example, one partner supported by UUSC is distributing face masks, soap for handwashing, medicine, and other supplies to help Rohingya families stay safe from COVID-19. Our long-term response includes supporting the efforts to document human rights abuses for submission to the U.N. and international justice mechanisms, as well as amplifying the voices of our partners to influence U.S. policy on Burma.
