Girls are naturally curious, but women are still underrepresented in STEM. On average, less than a third of female students choose to study higher education courses in subjects like math and engineering*. Inspired by some of our favorite innovators, here are three ways to encourage your Rebel Girl to unleash her curiosity.
Encourage All of Her Passions
Dr. Merritt Moore, the Quantum Ballerina, shows us that she can be both a ballerina and a physicist. Her story is a powerful example of how we can empower girls to pursue all their dreams - the bigger, the better.
Teach the Value of Failure
"Figuring out what you want comes from failing and trying again," says American scientist and inventor Valerie Thomas. As one of the first Black women to work at NASA, Valerie''s story shows us why we need to frame failure as a learning opportunity to build girls' confidence.
Talk About Successful Women
Stereotypes can be challenged by exposing girls to examples of women who have succeeded in STEM. At Rebel Girls, we believe that by highlighting stories of how women pursued these fields, it becomes easier for girls to envision themselves following similar paths.
Headline: Listen Up, Innovators! This Episode is Genius
This fall on our Podcast, we''re reuniting with the stories of our favorite Rebel Girls. Up first: Ada Lovelace! Have you heard how this STEM pioneer created the world''s first algorithm...in the 1840's? Prize-winning investigative reporter, Jodi Kantor introduces Ada''s inspiring story to give your Rebel Girl the role model she needs to close the gender gap in STEM.

In two weeks, America goes to the polls for an incredibly important election.
In two weeks, America goes to the polls for an incredibly important election. Use this time as a teaching moment and introduce your Rebel Girl to the power of voting through storytelling while making the process fun and full of possibility. Here are two stories to inform and inspire your Rebel Girl:
Sojourner Truth: As an American abolitionist and women's rights activist, Sojourner spoke out against injustices. Her activism led her to become one of the most recognizable figures in the women's suffrage movement and her story shows how hard Black women worked for the basic right to vote.
Ilhan Omar: After fleeing Somalia's civil war and spending years in a refugee camp, Ilhan became one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. As a woman wearing traditional garb in a position of power, her story reflects the progress we've made and the work we still need to do.
When her mother decided to run for governor of Texas, Cecile Richards learned about the importance of women supporting each other. We sat down with Cecile to talk about her advice for young Rebels.
"A lot of times we think we have to know every aspect of an issue or what the right solution is, but usually, the most important thing is just to get started," she said.
Listen to the full interview for Cecile's thoughts on engaging and inspiring your Rebel Girl's activist spirit.

This October 11th, International Day of the Girl feels more important than ever as we lead into an election.
Dear Rebels,
This October 11th, International Day of the Girl feels more important than ever as we lead into an election. At Rebel Girls, we decided we needed to dream bigger, and do something to inspire and connect girls around the world.
Which is why we are hosting our first Rebel Girls United Rally - an event inviting girls to band together as they dream, dance with Beyonce's dance captain, sing with Joan Jett, and discover our communal Rebel Girl spirit. Let us join forces to unleash our drive, determination, and optimism into the world, and stand with pride, united as Rebel Girls.
We are so excited that one of our favorite Rebels, Sky Brown, is hosting our United Rally, and that we will be joined by incredible immigrant women like humanitarian Elizabeth Nyamayaro, journalists Zainab Salbi and Carolina Guererro, chef Asma Khan, and Former Ambassador Samantha Power. We hope you will ask questions, learn more about the immigrant experience, and of course. have fun!
Because when Rebel Girls are united, there's nothing we can't do.
Stay Rebel! Elena Favilli - Founder and Author Jes Wolfe - CEO

Today we focus our energy on the things we're most grateful for: Our families, friends, community, and health.
Dear Rebels,
Today we focus our energy on the things we're most grateful for: Our families, friends, community, and health. For us, the silver lining in this past year has been the Rebel Girls' community - you continue to support us and each other, and for that, we're beyond proud.
While we write this, we know there's more work to be done. We also know that we're just getting started. This year, we've grown and adapted to keep your girls inspired, resilient and strong. Now, we're looking ahead to how we can include an even greater diversity of voices in Rebel Girls' stories, and give more girls the opportunity to see themselves in the pages of our books, on our podcast, and in our products.
This holiday season, we're honored to partner with a phenomenal non-profit, First Book. For every book purchased on our website, we will be donating a Rebel Girls book to an educator at a Title 1 school. We believe the stories of these extraordinary women can change the lives of girls around the world, and should be accessible to all.
Our goal of inspiring confidence in a generation of girls will take a village, and we're so thankful that you're a part of it. We wish you and your family a happy, healthy holiday.
The Rebel Girls team
Send gratitude with our friends from the IRC!
As part of our Rebel Girls United Rally that took place in October, we teamed up with the International Rescue Committee and Former U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power to send gratitude to Rebels around the world. We invite you to take a moment with your Rebel, download our special postcard, and discuss what you're thankful for.

Kids who are surrounded by books have a better chance of succeeding but in many high-poverty neighborhoods...
Kids who are surrounded by books have a better chance of succeeding, but in many high-poverty neighborhoods, it's nearly impossible for children to find something to read. In these "book deserts," as little as 2% of businesses sell print materials for children. Since 1992, First Book has been providing equal access to quality education for kids in need. This holiday, we've joined their effort to put our books in the hands of more Rebels and outlined a few steps you can take to create change closer to home.
Here's how you can make an impact with us on #GivingTuesday:
1
Shop with Rebel Girls and we'll donate one book for every book purchased to an educator working in an underfunded school.
2
Donate directly to First Book: Every $3 = 1 new book to a child in need. Thank you for helping make a powerful difference in a child's education.
3
Learn more about the issue so you can be part of the solution. Check out First Book's Research + Insights page to learn about how a lack of resources impacts a child's future.
4
Think local and donate your Rebel's used children's books to a school or library in need.
Not all Heroes Wear Capes: Listen to Our Special #GivingTuesday Podcast Episode
Educators in schools around the country are on the frontlines of the fight to make a difference in the lives of children. Today on our podcast, we celebrate a few of these heroes with a story. Meet the educators and listen as they share the Good Night Stories that inspired their path to becoming the hero-teachers they are today.

When it comes to girls and leadership, the message is clear: no girls allowed. When a
boy asserts himself, he's called a "leader."
When it comes to girls and leadership, the message is clear: no girls allowed. When a boy asserts himself, he's called a "leader." Yet when a little girl does the same, she's called "bossy," "too ambitious," or worse. That means that by middle school, girls are 25% less likely than boys to say they like being a leader. At Rebel Girls, we're changing that by showing girls they can and should be leaders. Here are three ways to encourage your Rebel Girl to be the leader the world needs.
Implement the "One Thing a Day" Rule
As Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, "Do one thing every day that scares you." Read Eleanor's story and talk to your Rebel about what it means to do "one thing a day that scares her," from raising her hand in class to speaking up when a classmate is being bullied.
Show Her that Leadership is a Journey...Not a Destination
Some of the best leaders take a winding road to the front. Ameenah Gurib was a university professor and entrepreneur before her election as the first female Head of State of Mauritius. When we give girls permission to take their time and follow their own path, we encourage their confidence.
Practice Over Perfection
Reading aloud is a great way to help your Rebel Girl practice finding her voice. Help her pick a favorite story, like Rebel Girl pirate Anne Bonny, and turn dinner into a nightly read aloud. Then talk about how Anne changed stereotypes by being a strong, independent woman.
Supreme Leader: Listen to Justice Ginsburg''s Powerful Story
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of the most accomplished women in America's history - a relentless voice on the bench for women's equality and civil rights. Discover Justice Ginsburg's story on our podcast, narrated by Priscilla Chan, co-founder of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Rebel Girls started as a single book and because of our community, our books and podcast have grown into something much bigger.
Friendly Reminder, Rebels! Shop before Wednesday Dec. 9th, to get your order for the holidays.
Rebel Girls started as a single book and because of our community, our books and podcast have grown into something much bigger. Reviews from parents and caregivers like these keep us committed to telling the stories of extraordinary women to inspire girls everywhere to dream bigger.
"I bought this for my 4 year old and it's perfect! Short, one page stories of kick butt women that reinforces to my child she can do anything! There are even stories about young girls, which was an added bonus because she saw the picture and asked me to read the story about the girl who is 'just like me'!" - T.P.
"This is a book I can proudly read to my little girl every night....I learn something myself AND feel like I'm being a good parent at the same time." - M.H.
"My daughter and I became aware of this book through the podcast of the same name. At 8 years old, my daughter LOVES reading the one-page biographies of these amazing women." - J.M.
Start Here with our StartHER Pack
Four years ago, we started Rebel Girls with a single book and a mission to inspire girls everywhere to dream bigger. This holiday, we've bundled our original Good Night Stories volume along with our coloring kit and Rebel Patch to introduce young readers to more great things from Rebel Girls.
Extra! Extra! We're Topping These Magazines' Gift Lists This Season
This holiday, our newest Rebel Girls book landed on gift lists at Cond? Nast Traveller, Entertainment Weekly, and Glamour UK, which called it "the empowering book" for girls.
This season, we partnered with First Book and are giving one book for every book purchased to an educator in an underfunded school. Whether you've wrapped up your holiday shopping or are waiting until the last minute, there's still time to shop and donate to a Rebel Girl in need.

When it comes to introducing your future voter to the issues that matter to her future, it's important to have conversations now.
When it comes to introducing your future voter to the issues that matter to her future, it's important to have conversations now. If we can jump start conversations with girls about politics, then their interpretation of what's happening isn't left to what they hear on the playground...or in the Zoom classroom. Here are three stories to spark conversation about what the election means and why voting matters.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg: RBG's story shows girls that they can have a voice and take a stand on the issues they believe in.
Talk about: What does 'justice for all' mean?
Samantha Power: Samantha Power's story creates space to explore how countries around the world unite to solve important global issues.
Talk about: Why does our country need to help other countries around the world?
Tereza Lee: As the original DREAMer, Tereza Lee helps us learn about citizenship and some of the rights that U.S. citizens have... including the right to vote.
Talk about: What does being a citizen mean?
Listen to this story of bravery: Edmonia Lewis narrated by Dana King
Edmonia Lewis was a "true Rebel," says artist Dana King, who tells the story of this incredible, early American sculptor on the latest episode of our podcast. "She moved to another country at a time when women, period, didn't do that alone, let alone Black women. That's just a degree of bravery that is so inspirational and motivating to me."
Help us win "Best Kids & Family Podcast"! Cast your vote for Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls in this year's Discover Pods Awards before 'polls' close on November 6th.

There are endless ways to explore self-expression, whether it's through fashion, sketching, writing, making music, or even cooking up a storm. But between the ages of 8 and 14, girls' confidence levels nose-dive by 30 percent, causing them to lose interest in fearless self-expression. Inspired by some of our favorite creators, here are three ways to encourage your Rebel Girl to confidently flex her creative muscle.
Introduce Her to Non-Traditional Artists
From culinary master Julia Child to performers like Carmen Miranda and fashion designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Rebel Girls' stories showcase the breadth of female creativity. Use these examples to show her that art can happen beyond the blank canvas.
Encourage Her to Get Out of Her Comfort Zone
Bold artist and Rebel Girl Marina Abramovic's creative process is intimately connected with stepping out of one's comfort zone. "How can you know you're going to succeed?" she says. "Having the courage to face the unknown is so important."
Show Her Why Art Matters
Art is a powerful agent of change. At Rebel Girls, we believe that creativity and self-expression are powerful tools in the fight for equality. Introduce her to stories of artist-activists like Josephine Baker, the performer who became a French Resistance agent, and Lupita Nyong'o, a Kenyan-Mexican actress who uses her platform to challenge stereotypes.
Rebel Girls on Repeat: Listen to Celia Cruz's Bold Story
What does fearless self-expression sound like? Listen as actress Justina Machado narrates singer and performer Celia Cruz's story of becoming "The Queen of Salsa." Be inspired by how Celia used her voice to spread Cuban music and culture throughout the world.
