Apple has announced they will introduce their new mobile operating system iOS 14 in September. This will change how publishers and advertisers can interact through user data. At Vungle, we know there are many questions about how this will impact the Ad Tech industry. In response, we've created a series of four blogs to educate and address what Vungle is doing to prepare for these changes.

We're proud to announce the release of our new SDK 6.7. It's important that you adopt this new version now so read on to understand what SDK 6.7 offers you.

Compliance with Upcoming Industry Regulations
Vungle's SDK 6.7 provides a critical step to supporting the standards and controls outlined in the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Enforcement of the CCPA is scheduled for July 1, 2020 so it's essential that you adopt SDK 6.7 now to ensure compliance with this new regulation. For more about the CCPA, please refer to our External FAQ.

Continued Support of Google Policy's on Sideloading
SDK 6.7 is aligned with Google's policy to discontinue support for Sideloading, a recent update in their enforcement policy. Starting July 15, 2020, there is the potential that Google will actively look for Android apps on their Play store to detect those with the Sideloading feature and may flag those apps. Previously, existing Android apps would only be checked and flagged if the Publisher submitted an update to their app or submitted a new app to the Play Store. Now that Google is taking an active role in detecting this feature, it is critical for you to download SDK 6.7. Upcoming Google Play Store API Change
Upgrade Now to Vungle SDK 6.5

In Vungle's SDK versions prior to SDK 6.5, there was a capability for Publishers for Android apps called "Side-Loading." This feature will no longer be supported by Google. Therefore, we are asking Publishers on SDK versions lower than SDK 6.5 to upgrade to SDK 6.5 or higher as soon as possible.

What exactly is Side-Loading?

In previous versions of our SDK, Vungle had a feature called the Side-Loading API for a Publisher's Android app and it is present in our Android SDK versions prior to SDK 6.5. This feature allowed the Publisher to direct a user to a site outside of the Google Play Store to download the app. In other words, instead of having to go to the Google Play Store, a user could be sent to a different website to download the app also.

Why are we announcing this?

With Google no longer supporting Side-Loading, Google will no longer be approving apps submitted to the Google Play Store that contain this feature on and after June 29. This means that Google will start flagging a Publisher's app in the Google Play Store and reject future app submissions that have this feature.

How will Google enforce this if my current app contains versions prior to SDK 6.5?

Existing Android apps will only be checked and flagged if the Publisher submits an update to their app on or after June 29, at which point submissions will be checked for the Side-Loading capability.

Vungle strongly recommends upgrading any Vungle SDK version prior to version 6.5 as soon as possible in a Publisher's next update cycle. This will ensure that the Publisher does not encounter any delays or disruptions to their business. The update is simple with an easy Drag & Drop update.

How do I upgrade to SDK 6.5? Are there any API changes?

To start using our SDK or upgrade your current version, you can simply download our SDK or via Bintray and drag-and-drop our latest SDK into their app. There are no API changes for existing users.

Are there other benefits for the Publisher to upgrade?

SDK 6.5 comes with additional features that both improve a Publisher's monetization efforts and improve the Publisher's end-user experience. These features include:

• Cache Optimization 2.0 - Publishers can experience increased fill and revenue through enhancements to our caching. This provides for better ad delivery speed and reduced user data. Furthermore, the improved ad delivery speed reduces potential latency and improves the end-user experience. No additional work from developers is needed to take advantage of these enhancements.
• Banner Ad Format - Publishers can increase their revenue by adding our new banner format to their high performing suite of ad placements. We have seen positive results in our Publishers' monetization efforts when using the banner ad format in conjunction with other ad formats we support. We have also heard positive feedback that many end-users prefer this ad format as it delivers a more seamless user experience. This in-turn attracts more buyers and helps publishers with both fill and revenue.
