Byrnes Strikes Out 12 Against Lions; First Shorewomen Freshman In At Least 20 Years To Win First Three Career Starts
MINNEOLA, Fla. — The Washington College softball team kicked off their 10 game spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins at the Minneola Athletic Complex in Minneola, Florida on the opening day of The Spring Games for the Shorewomen. Washington defeated Gordon 5-2 in their first game of the day before pulling away to defeat Penn State-Altoona, 12-4.

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen got on the board in the bottom of the first when Megan Robbins hit a two out single back up the middle, scoring Leah Stokes.
- In the bottom of the second, a double to center field from Rachel Butler drove home Grace Moery to push the lead to 2-0, and later in the inning with two away, Stokes reached on an error, allowing Butler to score and give Washington a 3-0 lead.
- Alli Saul delivered a two out single down the right field line in the bottom of the third, driving in Robbins to extend the lead to 4-0. Butler followed that with a single through the left side, chasing home Amelia Mazza to give the Shorewomen a 5-0 lead.
- Gordon got on the board in the top of the sixth on a two run home run to left center from Arianna Ramsaren, which also scored Lily Rivera to cut the lead to 5-2.
- The Fighting Scots got a two out baserunner in the top of the seventh, but would not score.
For the Shorewomen (3-2)
- Hitting: Butler (2-for-3, double, two RBI, run), Saul (hit, RBI), Robbins (hit, RBI, run), Stokes (walk, run, stolen base), Moery (hit, run, stolen base), Avery Byrnes (two walks, stolen base), Julia Hallman (stolen base).
- Pitching: Butler (win, 1-2, five innings, two hits, zero runs, two walks, eight strikeouts), Kayla Booros (two innings, four hits, two runs, zero walks, two strikeouts).
- The Shorewomen had six hits in the win, drew four walks, and left six runners on base.
- Washington committed an error, but it did not lead to a run for Gordon.
For Gordon (0-3)
- Hitting: Ramsaren (2-for-2, double, home run, two RBI, walk, run), Rivera (hit, run).
- Pitching: Mara Little (loss, 0-2, six innings, six hits, five runs, four earned, four walks, three strikeouts).
- The Fighting Scots also had six hits in the loss, drew a pair of walks, and left seven runners on base.
- Gordon committed one error, leading to one unearned Washington run.
Notes
- This is Butler''s 14th career game with at least two RBI.

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen again struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single to left field from Rachel DiMarcello, bringing home Stokes for the first run of the game. Washington could have done more damage as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but a force out at the plate and a line drive double play ended the inning.
- Penn State-Altoona got the game tied in the bottom of the first on a two out single up the middle from Brooke Colledge, which scored Kristen Hewitt.
- The Shorewomen again loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the second, but a strikeout ended the inning.
- Moery reached with one away in the top of the third on a throwing error, stole second base, then scored on a single up the middle from Saul to put Washington back on top 2-1.
- The Lions took advantage of a pair of errors, including a dropped fly ball with two away, to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third as Hewitt scored on the dropped fly ball.
- The Shorewomen used a pair of walks and a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases with one away in the top of the fifth and would get two runs courtesy of a throwing error by the center fielder following a fly out for the second out, as both Moery and Robbins would score on the error to give Washington a 4-2 lead. Byrnes would follow with a single up the middle, driving in Hallman to extend the lead to 5-2.
- The Lions loaded the bases with two away in the bottom of the fifth, but a strikeout ended the inning.
- Washington would load the bases again with one out in the top of the sixth, but this time, would not score.
- The Lions took advantage of a Washington error to grab a pair of two out, unearned runs when Colledge doubled to left center, bringing home Hewitt and Makenzie Lukehart to slice the lead to 5-4. A pop up from the next batter ended the inning.
- The Shorewomen put the game out of reach with a seven run outburst in the top of the seventh. Lexie Witmer started the scoring by doubling to left center field, scoring Mazza and Megan Blaine to push the lead to 7-4. DiMarcello followed with a single to right, driving in Stokes to push the lead to 8-4. Robbins followed that with a single of her own to left, scoring Witmer to make it a 9-4 game. Jenna Gordon would then pinch hit and single to right center, pushing DiMarcello across to set the score at 10-4. Mazza continued the outburst with a single to left field, scoring Robbins to make it an 11-4 game. Blaine capped the outburst with her first career hit and RBI, a single through the right side that scored Gordon and set the score at 12-4 and capped the scoring.
For the Shorewomen (4-2)
- Hitting: Witmer (double, two RBI, three walks, run), DiMarcello (2-for-5, two RBI, run), Robbins (2-for-3, RBI, two walks, two runs), Byrnes (2-for-4, RBI), Stokes (hit, walk, two runs, stolen base), Mazza (hit, RBI, run, stolen base), Moery (walk, stolen base, two runs), Blaine (hit, RBI, run), Gordon (hit, RBI, run), Saul (hit, RBI), Hallman (run), Booros (two walks).
- Pitching: Byrnes (win, 3-0, seven innings, six hits, four runs, one earned, four walks, 12 strikeouts).
- The Shorewomen collected 12 hits in the win, drew 10 walks, and left 12 runners on base.
- Washington committed five errors, leading to three unearned runs for Penn State-Altoona.
For Penn State-Altoona (0-3)
- Hitting: Colledge (3-for-4, double, three RBI, stolen base), Hewitt (hit, three runs), Lukehart (hit, run).
- Pitching: Jayde Burge (three innings, three hits, two runs, one earned, five walks, two strikeouts), Olivia Miller (loss, 0-1, four innings, nine hits, 10 runs, seven earned, five walks, one strikeout).
- The Lions had six hits in the loss, drew four walks, and left 10 runners on base.
- Penn State-Altoona committed three errors, leading to four unearned Washington runs.
Notes
- Byrnes is the first freshman in at least the last 20 years to win her first three career starts. Statistics prior to the 2001 season were not available at the time of this release.
- Byrnes also leads the Centennial Conference in strikeouts after today with 31.
- With the wins today, the Shorewomen are 2-0 to start their Florida spring break trip for the first time since 2016 when the team defeated Ramapo (5-1) and Utica (4-0). Washington would go on to start that Florida trip 4-0 en route to finishing the 10 game week at 6-4.
- This is the first time Washington has scored double digits in runs since defeating Wesley in last year''s season opener, 19-0.
