Over a month ago, I started to realize that our lives were about to significantly change...and that stress resilience and immunity were going to feel urgent in a way they never have before. We Need To Talk

Lopa here!?I hate to be the bearer of some really crap news... But I promise I'll whip it up into some inspiring "here's what we can do about it" in the end.?

It can all be summed up in this one image:?

In a study by the United Nations Development Program, covering 75 countries and representing 80% of the global population, "91% of men and 86% of women hold at least one bias against women in relation to politics, economics, education, violence or reproductive rights."¹

And it's not just in "less progressive" countries, either. Out of the 75 countries studied, only six had a majority (>50%) of people who held no bias towards women: Andorra, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden.

But even Sweden, the percentage of people who held at least one bias increased over the nine years the data covered.

Here are the numbers for the US & UK, which represent the majority of our email list (& are also conveniently next to each other on the graph to make for fewer clunky screenshots.????

It's not all bad news, though:?progress in the number of men with no gender social norms bias was largest in Chile, Australia, the United States (woohoo!) and the Netherlands. But, most countries showed an?increase?in the number of?women?who had gender bias.

Ay yay yai. I'll be honest: I live in a bubble of progressiveness and often, it's easy to believe that the bubbles and algorithmic echo-chambers we exist in are reality.

They're not, and this proves it.

So, what can we do?

Being as I'm not an expert in gender equality, or feminism, for that matter...I'm going to go the personal route and share with you my own journey into leadership as a woman.

I'm surprised myself to note that it's only been in the last few weeks (yes, weeks!) that I've felt that I could lay any claim at all to the title of "leader."

When I think about why, what comes rushing up are all these little messages that our culture has doled out, both quietly and loudly, over my entire life.?

Do I have my own personal insecurities that are independent of those? Of course.

But the phrases "don't take up too much space," "don't speak too loud," and "don't trust yourself" are the ones that arise naturally as I sit here and contemplate, "Why have I been afraid of my own gravitas?"

I mean, if this ?? is what we are telling women to do with our bodies...what is happening to our minds? Our sense of self? Our entitlement to...taking up any space at all??

I'm often struck watching my husband in group social settings. He's never looking for the right time to speak. He's never waiting for others to finish if he has a particularly juicy thought to share.

I'm uncomfortable to share how many times I've been at a table full of men and found myself waiting for that half-second pause where I could say the response I was thinking?to something?said 5 minutes ago.

Or how many times I've held back from saying something on social media that was too opposing to what others on a thread are saying.

In my opinion, leadership starts with leading ONE person: yourself.?

And how can you lead yourself if you aren't willing or able to advocate for your own needs, thoughts, and feelings??

If you don't use your VOICE as often as it wants to be used?

Yes, even at the micro-level of sharing your perspective in a conversation. It counts!

Since we just found out that our email list is overwhelmingly women (side note: tell your husbands/partners/dude friends about Rasa! Tell them to join our email list! Rasa is great for ALL GENDERS!), I'll make this rallying cry to you:?

TODAY, say ONE thing that's on your mind that you might have normally stuffed down.

If you're not someone who has that problem, or if you just want extra credit, then TODAY use your voice for SOMEONE ELSE-whether that's in person, on social media, or sending a letter to your senator/city council. Support one fellow woman in sharing?her voice, or use your voice for her and advocate for her needs.?

If you're a man and you're reading this, TODAY give a woman a little more conversational bandwidth than you're taking up yourself. Just try it out and see what happens!

I say TODAY because, to quote my new friend Sam Horn's book title:

"Someday is not a day in the week."?

Do it TODAY because our world needs the voice of our women, and we need it now.
