On Monday (14 December), Council members are expected to hold videoconference (VTC) consultations on Yemen. UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock, and the head of the UN Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), General Abhijit Guha, are the anticipated briefers.
Following the meeting on Yemen, a briefing by OCHA on the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia is expected under "any other business".
Also on Monday, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals'' president, Judge Carmel Agius, and its prosecutor, Serge Brammertz, are expected to brief in a VTC debate.
On Tuesday (15 December), the Council is expected to receive a VTC briefing by the Acting Special Representative and head of the UN Support Mission for Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, on the Secretary-General's report. The report, due at the end of December, is expected to address several aspects of the situation in Libya, including "proposals for effective ceasefire monitoring under the auspices of the UN".
An in-person briefing, followed by consultations, on South Sudan is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix is expected to brief on the Secretary-General's 90-day report on South Sudan while Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy (Viet Nam), chair of the 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee, will brief on South Sudan sanctions.
There will be a VTC briefing, followed by VTC consultations, on Wednesday (16 December) on the political and humanitarian situations in Syria. Special Envoy Geir O. Pedersen and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock are the likely briefers.
Also on Wednesday the Council will hear from the outgoing chairs of the 751 Somalia sanctions committee, Working Group on children and armed conflict, 2374 Mali sanctions committee, 1718 DPRK sanctions committee, 1970 Libya sanctions committee, the 1267/1989/2253 sanctions committee, 1988 Afghanistan sanctions committee and the the Ad Hoc Working Group on conflict prevention and resolution in Africa.
On Thursday (17 December), the Council will convene for its quarterly meeting on Afghanistan. The expected briefers are Deborah Lyons, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani (Indonesia) in his capacity as chair of the 1988 Afghanistan Sanctions Committee and Shkula Zadran, Afghanistan's Youth Representative to the UN.
Additionally, the Security Council will need to renew the mandate of the Monitoring Team assisting the 1988 Afghanistan Sanctions Committee before its 17 December expiry.
There will be an in-person open debate on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday (18 December). The president of the ICJ, Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, is expected to brief.
In addition, the Council will meet in the chamber to adopt resolutions renewing the mandates of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on Friday.
Regarding subsidiary bodies, the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee will meet on Monday (14 December) for a briefing on the threat of terrorism in Latin America and the Caribbean.
On Tuesday (15 December), the 1540 committee will meet to discuss its 2020 activities and progress made in the Comprehensive Review of the status of the implementation of resolution 1540 on the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. On the same day, the 1970 Libya sanctions committee is also expected to meet.
On Friday (18 December), the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict will hold a formal meeting for the introduction of the Secretary-General's report on children and armed conflict in South Sudan by the Office of the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict and a briefing from UNICEF on its Global Horizontal Note.
Also on Friday, the Informal Working Group on Documentation and other Procedural Matters will meet to discuss proposals for future action and the Annual Report from the Security Council to the General Assembly.
Additionally, a meeting is scheduled on Friday for the 1267/1989/2253 Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) (Da'esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee to discuss two reports from the Ombudsperson.
