Happy Holidays!

This year we have seen a lot of hype around different communications technologies for IoT applications, but Wi-SUN FAN continues to deliver wireless mesh with proven coverage, reliability, resilience and flexibility, along with enterprise grade security. We recently released and hosted a webinar around our new white paper Comparing IoT Technologies at a Glance. This paper discusses how Wi-SUN FAN compares with two other technologies often advocated for smart city and utility communications, namely LoRaWAN and NB-IoT. Our first wave of FAN 1.0 certified products was announced at DistribuTECH in New Orleans in February this year. At our Spring Member Meeting hosted by Landis+Gyr in Atlanta, we recognized individuals and companies for their leadership, innovation and commitment to delivering the Wi-SUN FAN certification program. In October, we held a productive Fall Member Meeting hosted by III, Allion and Vertexcom in Taipei, Taiwan to solidify our priorities from both the technical and marketing side for the coming year.

We have seen a lot of progress in 2019 and below are a few of the highlights:

• Steady growth in global membership over the last 12 months bringing us to over 250 members, now representing 26 countries.
• Strong PR campaigns supported by press releases, thought leadership articles, speaking engagements and global press coverage.
• City of London media event hosted by Giles Radford, City of London, Itron and Wi-SUN Alliance and attended by a number of press from IoT, networking, IT, government and smart city publications. Be sure to check out the video here to learn more about the City of London case study.
• Presence at global events, including DistribuTECH (US), India Smart Utility Week, Wireless Japan, Asia Utility Week and European Utility Week. In addition, we hosted Open House events in Seoul, Korea and Tokyo, Japan.
• Strengthened Wi-SUN Alliance’s social media presence, including videos, blogs and more, on LinkedIn and Twitter and our own blog site.

As we move into 2020 we look forward to continued support from our members and our partners through social media engagement, promotion of Wi-SUN case studies, and the continued certification and deployment of FAN products into the industry.

We are excited to kick off the New Year at DistribuTECH 2020 in San Antonio, Texas.  We are looking forward to another successful show with a growing number of Wi-SUN FAN certified products and a panel session titled How Field Area Networks (FAN) Standards Are Enabling Smart Utilities and Cities scheduled for Jan. 29^th from 2-3:30PM.                   

We anticipate another busy year with a number of global events in the pipeline, including India Smart Utility Week (March) and Wireless Japan (May).  We are also a looking to host an Open House event in the US during 2020, details to follow soon. Please be sure to continue to check our website for other global events and we look forward to seeing you at our Spring Members’ Meeting to be held March 25-26, 2020 in Raleigh, NC, USA (further details to follow).

Enhancements to Wi-SUN Field Area Network Communications - FAN 1.1

When it comes to selecting the right communications technology for large scale Industrial IoT, one size certainly does not fit all. Dear Wi-SUN Alliance Community,

I hope everyone is well and staying safe in these difficult times. Thanks to the help and support of our members, Wi-SUN Alliance continues to maintain a strong presence within the industry and has made significant progress in the first half of this year.

Wi-SUN Alliance continues to grow: our membership has increased by 27% in the last 12 months, with approximately 250 member companies in 27 countries. Our presence has been further strengthened with Arm and Silicon Labs, two of the largest global semiconductor companies, becoming Promoter members and taking seats on the Wi-SUN Alliance Board of Directors. Our members represent a wide cross section of the industry including silicon and product vendors, services providers, enterprises, utilities, municipalities, universities and government organizations.

The Wi-SUN FAN ecosystem is expanding too, with more than 30 Wi-SUN FAN certified products from 12 member companies.

We started the New Year with Alliance and members exhibiting at DistribuTECH 2020 in San Antonio, Texas.  As anticipated it was another busy and successful show. Wi-SUN Alliance member companies collaborated to demonstrate a multi-vendor Wi-SUN FAN network. The demonstration featured certified Wi-SUN FAN devices from multiple vendors distributed across the show floor at both the manufacturers'' booths and at the Wi-SUN booth.

In addition to this demonstration, close to 20 Wi-SUN Alliance member companies exhibited at this year’s Conference, showing the growing Wi-SUN FAN ecosystem. Other highlights included a panel session with Wi-SUN Alliance, Xcel Enery, AvanGrid and Enernex. The panel session “How FAN Standards Are Enabling Smart Utilities and Smart Cities” was moderated by Vicki Trees from Landis+Gyr. At the beginning of March, we were a technology partner and exhibitor at India Smart Utility Week.  India is embarking on a very large smart meter program and Wi-SUN FAN is an ideal technology for advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) programs in India

It was unavoidable that we had to cancel our Spring Members'' Meeting which was due to be held in Raleigh, NC.  We will continue to monitor W.H.O. and national guidance and will only plan our next face to face meeting when it is safe and practical to do so. 

However, since Wi-SUN Alliance was first formed, much of our work has been conducted remotely and this will continue during this unprecedented period. Our technical activities are continuing through committee and working group conference calls. We are working on enhancements to the Wi-SUN PHY and FAN technical profile specifications. These include defining the operation of battery powered devices on Wi-SUN FAN networks and delivering higher data rates and lower latency. This enables a range of new applications for Utilities and Smart Cities.
