NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

The month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and important contributions of Native people, as well as an opportunity for education and awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced historically and today. OHERO:KON - UNDER THE HUSK follows two Mohawk girls on their journey to become Mohawk women. Friends since childhood, Kaienkwinehtha and Kasennakohe are members of the community of Akwesasne on the U.S./Canada border. Together, they undertake a four-year rite of passage for adolescents, called Oher�:kon, or "under the husk." This is a story of a traditional practice that challenges young girls spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically, shaping the women they become.

FATTITUDE is an eye-opening look at how popular media perpetuates fat hatred that results in a cultural bias and a civil rights issue for people living in fat bodies.

Fat people are paid $1.25 less an hour than their thin counterparts and can still legally lose jobs just because they�re fat. Additionally, 1 in 3 doctors associates fat bodies with hostility, dishonesty and poor hygiene. FATTITUDE looks at how this systemic cultural prejudice results in fat discrimination. Informed by a post-modern, post-colonial, feminist perspective, the film also examines how fat-shaming crosses the lines of race, class, sexuality and gender. It features a diverse variety of voices such as academic scholars, activists, filmmakers, actors and psychologists, including Lindy West, Sonya Renee Taylor, Virgie Tovar, Ricki Lake, and more.

A body positive documentary intent on inspiring change, FATTITUDE offers alternative ideas that embrace body acceptance at all sizes, explores examples of fat positive representations being produced today by activists and the media, and focuses on real life solutions for moving forward and changing the national conversation about body image.

HOME TRUTH chronicles one family�s pursuit of justice, shedding light on how our society responds to domestic violence and how the trauma from domestic violence tragedies can linger throughout generations. In 1999, Colorado mother Jessica Gonzales experienced every parent�s worst nightmare when her three young daughters were killed after being abducted by their father in violation of a domestic violence restraining order. A Radical Exploration of Restorative Justice

Farewell to Kristen Fitzpatrick and
Welcome to Kendra Hodgson

Kristen Fitzpatrick, our wonderful Director of Distribution and Acquisition, is leaving the organization at the end of the month. After nearly 20 years with us, Kristen has accepted a position at Field of Vision as their Managing Director. While we are sad to see her go, we are excited for her new adventure. She has been an extraordinary asset to the organization, and we all look forward to her continued creative contribution to the industry!

As we see Kristen off, we are very excited to welcome Kendra Hodgson, currently the Director of Distribution & Marketing at Media Education Foundation, as our new Director of Strategy and Innovation. We look forward to all the new insights Kendra will be bringing to the organization as well as her almost 20 years of experience in educational distribution and marketing. Watch for more news about Kendra, the staff and the organization in January.

Abby Ginzberg's WAGING CHANGE, one of our newest releases, shines an urgent light on the female driven movement to end the federal tipped minimum wage of $2.13 for restaurant workers. A recent in-depth piece in The New York Times details the legal progress and complexities of this ongoing debate.

A judge made a ruling in Boundaoui vs FBI, the case sparked by filmmaker Assia Boundaoui's examination of her Muslim-American community�s surveillance by the FBI for THE FEELING OF BEING WATCHED. The judge ordered agents to appear in court in January to answer questions.

According to news sources, the Indian Government is preparing to carry out the death sentences on four of the men who were convicted of the brutal rape and murder of 23 year-old medical student Joyti Singh in Delhi in 2012, the subject of Leslee Udwin�s powerful documentary INDIA'S DAUGHTER.

MARCELINE. A WOMAN. A CENTURY, which documents the courageous and radical life of Holocaust survivor, filmmaker and political activist Marceline Loridan-Ivens, will have its New York premiere at Lincoln Center on January 22 as a featured selection of the NY Jewish Film Festival.

Marceline was only 15 when both she and her father, a Polish Jew from L�d?, were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She survived but her father didn�t. In 1961, she appeared in the landmark film Chronicle of a Summer, which gave birth to the term cinema verit�, and later co-directed powerful documentaries with her husband, the legendary Dutch director Joris Ivens.

Filmed as she was nearing 90 years old and living in Paris, MARCELINE. A WOMAN. A CENTURY is a thought-provoking chronicle of a remarkable witness of the 20th century. Given the current wave of anti-Semitic hate crimes and the recent ADL report that more than 1 billion people worldwide harbor virulent, anti-Jewish sentiments, MARCELINE could not be more timely nor urgent. This moving film puts a human face on hate and speaks to the incredible capacity of human beings to turn trauma into compassion.

MOTHERTIME is a personal video diary that takes us on a corporeal journey in parenting via a small portable Go-Pro camera. Worn by both mother and child, or left on any surface and turned on and off remotely, the camera over the period of a year and a half captures a real-time, sensorial journey spanning the frenetic to mundane.

Set primarily amidst scenes at home, the film explores the whimsical, ordinary, sometimes claustrophobic repeating loops of work and play in daily domestic life. The audience is drawn into the raw and messy reality of the mother-daughter relationship as the markers of toddlerhood become the turning points of the film itself. Early mobility, language acquisition and increasing child independence provide an intimate perspective of the mother�child relationship, intentionally blurring where the mother ends and the child begins. MOTHERTIME explores the boundaries of time and home to invite the viewer to see the labor of motherhood as neither romanticized nor banal, while it plays in the physical and emotional space between mother and child.

NEW WMM RELEASE BELLY OF THE BEAST
COMING TO THEATERS OCT. 16!

Called "harrowing" by NPR and listed as a new documentary to watch by CBS News, new WMM release BELLY OF THE BEAST will open at the Roxie in San Francisco on 10/14, the Laemmle Theather in LA, the O Cinema in Miami, AFI Silver in DC on 10/16, and venues in New Orleans, Seattle, and New York before going on to other theaters around the country.

This powerful film, made by Peabody and Emmy Award-winning and nominated filmmakers, has an original song from nine-time Grammy-winning singer Mary J. Blige. "I was moved by Erika Cohn's important documentary," said Blige, "I immediately knew I wanted to be involved and was inspired to write a song that would amplify the voices of women in prison." Variety recently announced that Blige''s song will be submitted for Oscar consideration for Best Original Song. Hear a portion of the song in the trailer.

With recent stories in the New York Times, NPR, and other outlets about unnecessary hysterectomies being performed in ICE detention centers, the release of BELLY OF THE BEAST, an investigation of forced sterilizations in California prisons, could not be more timely.

The film -- which has attracted the attention of celebrities such as Common, QTip, and Yvette Brown -- premiered as the opening night film at Human Rights Watch Film Festival, New York in June and has upcoming festival screenings at the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival.

About the film:

When a courageous young woman and a radical lawyer discover a pattern of illegal sterilizations in California's women's prisons, they wage a near-impossible battle against the Department of Corrections. With a growing team of investigators inside prison working with colleagues on the outside, they uncover a series of statewide crimes -- from inadequate health care to sexual assault to coercive sterilizations -- primarily targeting women of color. This shocking legal drama captured over 7-years features extraordinary access and intimate accounts from currently and formerly incarcerated people, demanding attention to a shameful and ongoing legacy of eugenics and reproductive injustice in the United States.

About the Filmmakers

Director Erika Cohn is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning director/producer who Variety recognized as one of 2017's top documentary filmmakers to watch and was featured in DOC NYC's 2019 "40 Under 40." Most recently, Erika completed The Judge, a Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated film about the first woman judge appointed to the Middle East's Shari'a courts, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and was broadcast on PBS' 2018 Independent Lens series.

Producer Angela Tucker is a writer, director and Emmy nominated producer who works in narrative and documentary genres. Her directorial work includes "All Skinfolk, Ain't Kinfolk," a documentary short which aired PBS' Reel South about a mayoral election in New Orleans. A Visiting Professor at Tulane University, Tucker was a Sundance Institute Women Filmmakers Initiative Fellow.

About the film:

When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that most facial-recognition software misidentifies women and darker-skinned faces, she is compelled to investigate further. It turns out that artificial intelligence, which was defined by a homogeneous group of men, is not neutral. What Buolamwini learns about widespread bias in algorithms drives her to push the U.S. government to create the first-ever legislation to counter the far-reaching dangers of bias in a technology that is steadily encroaching on our lives. Centering on the voices of women leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected, CODED BIAS asks two key questions: what is the impact of Artificial Intelligence's increasing role in governing our liberties? And what are the consequences for people stuck in the crosshairs due to their race, color, and gender?

About the Filmmaker

Director Shalini Kantayya is a TED Fellow, a William J. Fulbright Scholar, and a finalist for the ABC Disney DGA Directing Program. She directed the season finale episode for the National Geographic television series Breakthrough, a series profiling trailblazing scientists transforming the future. Her debut feature film Catching the Sun, about the race for a clean energy future, was named a New York Times Critics' Pick and was nominated for the Environmental Media Association Award for Best Documentary. An Associate of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Kantayya finished in the top 10 out of 12,000 filmmakers on Fox's On the Lot, a show by Steven Spielberg in search of Hollywood's next great director.

The majority of people serving food in U.S. restaurants are paid a federal sub-minimum wage of only $2.13 an hour and are forced to depend on tips to feed themselves and their families. WAGING CHANGE exposes the liabilities created by this wage structure -- liabilities that existed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but which are amplified by the current moment.

Women, who hold two-thirds of all tip-based jobs, are especially affected. Their reliance on tips leads to pervasive gender discrimination, sexual assault, and sexual harassment - and prevents many women from speaking up. Further, the subminimum tip wage leaves them with barely any support from unemployment in times of crisis.

CODED BIAS Opens in Theaters Across the U.S.!

We are excited to announce that our newest release, CODED BIAS (Dir. Shalini Kantayya), which was made with the support of WMM''s Production Assistance Program, opened in theaters across the U.S. on November 18 after a successful premiere at the Metrograph last week. Called "the most cleareyed of several recent documentaries about the perils of Big Tech" by the New York Times, "insightful" by CNET, and predicted by VARIETY to be an Oscar contender for Best Documentary Feature, CODED BIAS reveals how the fights for racial and gender justice must be fought on the fields of AI and computer science. A panel discussion moderated by Van Jones will be streaming live on the WMM Facebook page on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 PM ET. Browse the list of screenings to choose your virtual cinema. BELLY OF THE BEAST to air on Independent Lens on Nov. 23

After a successful theatrical run, the acclaimed new release BELLY OF THE BEAST (Dir. A New York Times Critics Pick, called a "thrilling legal drama" by the LA Times, and predicted by VARIETY to be an Oscar Contender for Best Documentary Feature, BELLY OF BEAST is at once a heart-wrenching confrontation with human rights abuses and an inspiring story of human resilience. WMM Films & Filmmakers on the DOC NYC & IDA Shorts List

Awards and Accolades

After the initial set-back of COVID-19 in the spring, WMM films have been making their way on the virtual film festival circuit and have been receiving numerous awards, accolades, and recognition -- too many to list them all! Notably and most recently, PA Program alum Kirsten Johnson won Best Director and Best Documentary Feature (DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD) and PA Program film MR. SOUL! (Dir. Melissa Haizlip) won Best First Documentary Feature in the Critic''s Choice Documentary Awards. WMM releases WAGING CHANGE and A NORMAL GIRL won Grand Jury Awards at the United Nations Association Film Festival and new release SISTERS RISING won Best Documentary Feature at the American Indian Film Festival. Directors Shalini Kantayya (CODED BIAS) and Ekwa Msangi (FAREWELL AMOR), both of whom were in the WMM PA Program, also received filmmaker awards from NYWIFT at the Hamptons International Film Festival, and WMM filmmaker Alanis Obamsawin won the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize. Dear Friends of Women Make Movies,

As we watched the film event cancellations and postponements, especially the major festivals, this week, we were both stunned and deeply saddened. With people losing lives, public school children at risk of missing meals, and minimum wage workers losing jobs overnight, it can be easy to feel like our sadness about the loss of a film premiere is trivial. And yet, at Women Make Movies, we are keenly aware of how pivotal these events are for filmmakers -- and how significant they are for all of us from a cultural, artistic, and educational perspective. We want to assure you that in the midst of these turbulent times, we are here to support filmmakers, as well as the audience for their films.

As we globally move into an era of physical social distancing, it doesn''t have to mean social isolation. Technology, while sometimes the cause of disconnection, has the potential to bring us together across vast distances. Many of you know we are currently hosting a virtual film festival for #WomensHistoryMonth, which we launched before reports of the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the United States. More than 600 people from every continent have been viewing films and sharing in this common virtual experience. We are currently exploring how we can expand the virtual film festival model to best meet the needs of both filmmakers and the organizations that use our films. If you have questions or thoughts, please reach out to at info@wmm.com.

We will continue to support films through our distribution catalog and Production Assistance Program including our upcoming webinars for our filmmakers which will go on as scheduled. We''re also brainstorming how best to shine a spotlight on films whose festival runs have been interrupted. And we have begun to compile a list of resources for artists with lost or reduced wages, which we will be updating regularly.

Logistically, our staff is working remotely. That means our work is proceeding as usual (well, as usual as it can be in these unusual times), but it does mean that if you stop by our offices, we won''t be there. And if you call, no one will pick up the phone for a little while. But send us an email or leave us a voicemail, and we''ll get back to you.

About the film:

When a courageous young woman and a radical lawyer discover a pattern of illegal sterilizations in California's women's prisons, they wage a near-impossible battle against the Department of Corrections. With a growing team of investigators inside prison working with colleagues on the outside, they uncover a series of statewide crimes -- from inadequate health care to sexual assault to coercive sterilizations -- primarily targeting women of color. This shocking legal drama captured over 7-years features extraordinary access and intimate accounts from currently and formerly incarcerated people, demanding attention to a shameful and ongoing legacy of eugenics and reproductive injustice in the United States.

About the Filmmakers

Director Erika Cohn is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning director/producer who Variety recognized as one of 2017's top documentary filmmakers to watch and was featured in DOC NYC's 2019 "40 Under 40." Most recently, Erika completed The Judge, a Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated film about the first woman judge appointed to the Middle East's Shari'a courts, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and was broadcast on PBS' 2018 Independent Lens series.

Producer Angela Tucker is a writer, director and Emmy nominated producer who works in narrative and documentary genres. Her directorial work includes "All Skinfolk, Ain't Kinfolk," a documentary short which aired PBS' Reel South about a mayoral election in New Orleans. A Visiting Professor at Tulane University, Tucker was a Sundance Institute Women Filmmakers Initiative Fellow.

WMM Acquires BELLY OF THE BEAST
& Other Exciting New Releases

We are excited to announce a slate of fantastic new films. Belly of the Beast, a film by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning director/producer Erika Cohn (The Judge, In Football We Trust) that explores forced sterilizations in women''s prisons, is now available to schedule for virtual screenings and will be available to order on DVD/DSL shortly. Paulette, by Piaget Award-winning filmmaker Heather Rae (Cherkoee), tells the story of Paulette Jordan, the first Native American and the first woman to win the Idaho Primary for Governor. Rae''s producer credits include Frozen River, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and acclaimed film Trudell, among many others.

Up and coming filmmaker Zanah Thirus has joined Women Make Movies with her two new films Black Feminist, which explores the double-edged sword of racism and gender inequality that Black Women face in America, and Unlearning Sex, an intimate and personal exploration of sexual assault and trauma.

And last but certainly not least, we are thrilled to announce new films from returning WMM filmmakers! Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater (Mrs. Goundo''s Daughter, Maggie Growls, and Daring to Resist) bring us Abortion Helpline, a timely film about the Hyde Amendment and the limits it places on access to abortion that premiered at Sundance and won the Grand Jury Prize for Shorts at AFI Docs. Katsitsionni Fox (Mohawk; Ohero:Kon - Under the Husk) has released a powerful new film, Konn?n:Kwe - Without a Whisper, which tells the story of of the influence Native American Women had on the women''s suffrage movement in the United States.

WMM Partners with Chicken & Egg on the AlumNEST
COVID-19 Relief Fund

WMM is thrilled to partner with Chicken & Egg Pictures on the AlumNest Relief Fund, which was created to support the community of Chicken & Egg alumnae filmmakers that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The grants are inspired in part by the need to preserve and support our diverse storytellers during this challenging time. Read more about the fund

Women Make Movies at Festivals and Markets

Even though we can''t travel and be there in person, Women Make Movies is excited to be attending markets and pitch sessions virtually. Women Make Movies will be participating in the San Sebasti?n Lau Haizetara Documentary Co-Production Forum, Nordisk Panorama, South Korea's DMZ Industry Doc Match, and is currently meeting with filmmakers at IFP Week.

During the summer, Zimmerman also participated in pitch sessions at Docs by the Sea, an international forum based in Indonesia for creative documentary projects with a focus of Southeast Asia, as well as Doc Lab Poland and the Docu Rough Cut Boutique in Sarajevo.

And Zimmerman had the pleasure of giving a livestream presentation with the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan about the history and importance of female filmmaking and a 3-day workshop on storytelling for documentary filmmakers in Central Asia. The program was organized by the American Film Showcase (AFS), a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

WMM at the Minority Health Film Festival

Women Make Movies is thrilled to announce that seven of our new films are being screened at this year's Minority Health Film Festival, a project of the Milwaukee Film Festival that features films about different factors that influence health outcomes in minority communities. Women Make Movies is excited to be partnering with One Woman One Vote to bring you the 2020 One Woman One Vote Film Festival in celebration of the centennial of the 19th amendment of women's suffrage. Read more to learn how you can watch films and host screenings

WAGING CHANGE National Labor Week Screening
Was a Success!

During the week following Labor Day, Women Make Movies partnered with?One Fair Wage and?Social Action Media?and 20 co-sponsors to host a virtual screening of our new release?WAGING CHANGE (a film by Abby Ginzberg), which examines the relationship between economic, racial, and gender justice for tipped workers.? More than 700 people joined us for the screening and panel discussion with the filmmaker Abby Ginzberg, Saru Jayaraman (president, One Fair Wage), Nikki Cole (National Policy Campaign Director, One Fair Wage), and Cheadza Kundidzora (restaurant worker).? The panel discussion is still available to watch here.
