The Ferrari non-vintage Brut is produced from both estate vineyard Chardonnay and from growers which Ferrari holds long standing relationships with. The wine is made using metodo classico, spending up to three years maturing in bottle on the less. It's bristling with mineral intensity, balanced by an attractive note of buttery bakeshop and crispy bread. With more time in the glass, it blossoms to show notes or crushed green apple and white flowers. A fine bead of bubbles coasts across tension-filled textures, as brisk acids bring an inner sweetness to its orchard fruits along with sweet florals, which develop toward the close. The balance here is admirable to say the least, helping to make the non-vintage Brut a remarkable value. Drinking window: 2020 - 2026.

This opens with aromas of black currant, crushed violet, resin and a whiff of baking spice. Since it lacks the hefty structure of most Amarones it''s more easygoing, offering red cherry, mint and a hint of tobacco alongside fine-grained tannins.

The 2016 Innovant Red Wine checks in as 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot that spent 20 months is 45% new French oak. It''s a beautiful bottle of wine that has loads of blue fruits, violets, and subtle earthy minerality as well as medium to full body, incredibly polished tannins, and a great finish. Coming all from the Alden Vineyard in Alexander Valley, it represents a good value even at the $50 price point. Drink it over the coming 15 years or so.

I love the aromatics to this with crushed berries, violets and black olives. Hints of vanilla and some caramel. Decadent. Full-bodied and round with very creamy tannins that melt into the wine. It starts off slowly and and then kicks off a few seconds later. The tannins are extremely polished and refined. Hard not to drink now, but wait. Try after 2025.

One of the very few in the vintage where there is actual flesh on the bones, and lots of it. The danger in dry years is that tannins can get too angular, and the overall feeling too austere, but here they have successfully managed to maintain juice and aromatics. A three week harvest at P?trus, a long window for this property where the terroir is so even. There is an awful lot to recommend here, and is easily one of the best wines of the year. The aromatic side is extremely enjoyable, touches of fresh hay, lovely gentle spice, tons of dark fruits, cinnamon and complexity. Extremely charming, with lots to say for itself.

The 2017 Chateau Petrus is, as always, 100% Merlot that''s from the top of the Pomerol plateau. The 2017 is an incredibly elegant, perfumed example from this estate that has terrific cassis, raspberry, and red currants fruits as well as lots of floral and violet hints, medium to full body, a beautiful spine of acidity, and building tannins. It''s not a blockbuster like the 2015 and 2016, yet it's flawlessly balanced, with stunning purity of fruit and a great, great finish. Give bottles a solid 7-8 years, and it should keep for 20-25+.

?Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Trotanoy is 100% Merlot and begins quite stubborn and broody on the nose at this youthful stage, needing a lot of coaxing to reveal a core of plum preserves, blackberry pie and licorice with suggestions of cast-iron pan, underbrush, tilled soil and charcoal. Medium-bodied, the palate is not at all weighty, but it is built like a brick house, with bags of restrained, muscular fruit and a solid line of firm, grainy tannins, finishing with epic length and fantastic tension. A very impressive wine that should by incredibly long-lived!

I retasted the 2016 and 2017 next to the current 2018 to get some comparisons. Tasting the three years side by side, the 2017 Almaviva is clearly the one with more herbal notes and lots of concentration. It was a warm year with low yields and high concentration, but funnily enough, there are more herbaceous notes in the wine. This is a year of power and concentration, but the tannins are nicely coated by juicy fruit.
