WCPT appoints consultants for project in Tajikistan

WCPT has contracted three consultants to develop and deliver a project in Tajikistan. The consultants will lead on the development of entry-level physical therapy education and provide clinical bridge training for clinicians and staff at the Republican Medical College of Tajikistan.

Funded by the USAID Strengthening Rehabilitation Services in Health Systems, the project is a collaboration between UCP Wheels for Humanity and is supported by the Ukrainian Association of Physical Therapy, the Ukrainian National Association for People with Disabilities, the WCPT, and the Republican Medical College of Tajikistan. The project ber and will run until mid-2022.

The three consultants bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in the development and teaching of entry-level physical therapist programmes, understanding of WCPT education policies and standards, demonstrable experience of mentoring, leading teams, advocacy and capacity building.

WCPT President's blog: Learning to be a new board

Australia, Ecuador, Ireland, Japan, Malta, Rwanda, Trinidad and Tobago – what do they have in common? At first glance, not so much but the members of the new WCPT Executive Board hail from these countries.

Some have been or are currently the president or vice president of their professional organisations. One was instrumental in the foundation of the professional organisation. One has been the chair of a WCPT region and another the chair of a regulatory authority. They are clinicians, managers, researchers, teachers, humanitarian workers. They are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles. Between them, they speak eight languages.

Report sets out recommendations to strengthen rehabilitation services

A report, published by the Global Rehabilitation Alliance (GRA), illustrates how rehabilitation can improve global health and human rights.

The report provides evidence that key stakeholders can use to build strategies to improve the availability of quality, coordinated, affordable, and user-centred rehabilitation. It also includes recommendations for different stakeholders (states, donors and civil society, disabled people’s organisations) that could help strengthen rehabilitation services and improve the health and wellbeing of people around the world.

Physiopedia offers free online course: introduction to traumatic brain injury

Traumatic Brain Injury is defined as a non-progressive injury to the brain, which occurred as a result of trauma.

It occurs when an external force impacts the brain and is most often caused by a blow, bump, jolt or penetrating wound to the head.

Physiopedia is offering a free online course providing an overview of physiotherapy practice relating to traumatic brain injury to develop a foundation of knowledge that will enable participants to assess and treat individuals with acute and chronic impairment as a result of traumatic brain injury. The course will give participants an understanding of the anatomy, structure, clinical presentation, assessment and management of traumatic brain injury based on the latest evidence available.

Call for abstracts for first international transplant athlete conference

The first international transplant sport research conference is due to take place on 10 November 2019, and the organisers are calling for abstract submissions and transplant athletes’ videos.

This inaugural conference focuses on transplant athletes and is hosted by the Society of Sports Therapists in collaboration with Coventry University. The conference aims to:

promote research relating to transplant athletes
contribute to the evidence base of transplant sport
promote the contribution of sport and exercise therapists supporting Transplant Sport.

World Physical Therapy Day is celebrated around the world!

World Physical Therapy Day 2019 was a great success and, thanks to many volunteers, the materials were translated into 22 languages.

Thank you to all our member organisations and the many individual physical therapists, hospitals and health care centres who took part in the day and helped make World Physical Therapy Day 2019 a resounding success.

Alberto Cairo receives UNHCR award

Congratulations to Italian physical therapist Alberto Cairo - regional winner for Asia of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency annual Nansen Refugee Award.

Previously, in 2007, Alberto Cairo was the first recipient of the WCPT Humanitarian Award for his exceptional care, compassion, dedication and personal commitment as demonstrated in his work in Kabul in Afghanistan. Alberto has lived in Afghanistan since 1989 and works at a hospital run by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

WCPT warns against ‘predatory’ events and journals

Rogue conference organisers may again be targeting physical therapists.

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is marked every year on 10 October.

The theme for this year’s day is suicide prevention: A day for “40 seconds of action”, in recognition that one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds.

The Lancet launches new rheumatology journal

The Lancet has launched a new specialty journal, The Lancet Rheumatology.

The Lancet Rheumatology is a monthly journal committed to publishing content relevant to rheumatology specialists worldwide, with a focus on studies that advance clinical practice, challenge the status quo, and advocate change in health policy. Historian's talk focuses on massage and history of physiotherapy

Kay Nias is a Medicine Galleries Research Fellow based at the Science Museum in London. She recently gave a talk on massage and the history of physiotherapy to the Society for the Social History of Medicine and Health at the University of Birmingham.

In her talk, Kay explored some of the ways in which debates about massage, the status of touch and haptic knowledge stimulated and shaped the professionalisation of physical therapy in Britain in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

IPHA launches project to identify History's Greatest Physios

To mark the anniversary of the commencement of the Society of Trained Masseuses in the UK, the International Physiotherapy History Association (IPHA) has launched a project to identify History's Greatest Physios.

IPHA is calling for nominations from the global physical therapy community to help determine History’s Greatest Physios.

Nominations will open on 1 October 2019 and close on 21 October 2019.

2019 is most successful World Physical Therapy Day

This year’s World Physical Therapy Day (WPTD) and the theme of chronic pain has proved to be the most successful since the launch of the day in 1996.

Materials for the day were translated into 22 languages, compared with 12 languages in 2018. The toolkit produced for 2019 was downloaded more than any previous WPTD toolkit: 118,800 downloads, compared with 52,414 in 2018.

WCPT Congress 2021 - call for focused symposia opens in November

The call for focused symposia at WCPT Congress 2021 will open on 18 November.

This is an opportunity to be involved in one of the event's leading sessions, where cutting edge topics are explored by high profile speakers drawing large audiences. The submissions should address the topic from an international/diverse perspective by including presentations from a range of countries and preferably from three different WCPT regions.

The submission deadline for focused symposium proposals is 31 January 2020. Details will be added to the WCPT Congress website in November.

Stakeholders discuss provision of physical therapy education and training in Tajikistan

More than 30 people attended a three-day stakeholders’ meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, to discuss the development of entry-level physical therapy education and provide clinical bridge training for clinicians and staff at the Republican Medical College of Tajikistan.

The meeting was part of a project, Strengthening Rehabilitation Services in Health Systems (SRSHS), to establish physical therapy services and raise awareness of rehabilitation services to improve the quality of life for people in Tajikistan.

Research project focuses on ethical decision-making project

A research study is looking for physical therapists to take part in interviews about ethical decision-making.

Andrea Sturm, a PhD student from the Interuniversity of Graz, and Dr Caroline Fryer and Dr Ian Edwards, both from the University of South Australia, are collaborating on the project to investigate factors influencing ethical decision-making in physical therapy practice worldwide. The research team are all physical therapists, researchers and educators who are teaching professional ethics.

PEDro celebrates its 20th birthday!

For 20 years PEDro, a professional partner of WCPT, has been providing physical therapists around the world with easy access to high-quality clinical research so they can practice effectively and safely.

PEDro was conceived in 1999, just four years after the launch of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, when evidence-based practice was in its infancy. Since then, PEDro has been used to answer over 24 million questions. These searches have been performed by physical therapists from 237 countries and territories. At the top of the league table of PEDro users is Brazil (23%), followed by the United States (9%), Spain (8%), Australia (7%), and France (5%).

Call for focused symposia opens

The call for focused symposia is now open. This is your opportunity to be involved in one of the key sessions at congress.

The sessions include high profile speakers, draw large audiences, and aim to create insightful and engaging learning experiences that ultimately inform, inspire, involve and empower delegates.

Lasting 1.5 hours, each symposium is organised by a recognised expert in the field who leads a coherent session with 3-4 speakers working together and engaging with the audience to draw out the relevance, challenges, applicability and take-home messages. The submissions should address the topic from an international/diverse perspective by including presentations from a range of countries and preferably from three different WCPT regions.

The submission deadline for focused symposium proposals is 31 January 2020. All submissions will be notified of the outcome on 26 March 2020.

Focused symposia topics

The call is open to any topic relevant to the profession. However, the Congress Programme Committee (CPC) is particularly interested in proposals that address any of the following areas identified through the WCPT congress market research survey:

professional challenges across all areas, such as diversity and inclusion, quality assurance, implicit bias, mental health, and wellbeing
how physical therapy needs to change to address global health issues, such as the demands of an ageing population, multi-morbidity and topics identified in the Rehabilitation 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals
the unique contribution of physical therapists in the physical activity agenda
challenging perceptions of pain management across the lifespan and across all fields of practice
innovative approaches to address policy and advocacy issues, such as health system funding, cost-effectiveness and the unique role of physical therapy.

Where applicable to the topic, priority will be given to symposia that include perspectives from low-resource countries.

Focused symposia format	�	Post-congress publication
Each focused symposium consists of: an introduction by the chair a maximum of three 20-minute or four 15-minute presentations 15 minutes of questions and answers with the audience spread across the session a 10-minute summary by the chair highlighting the implications, applicability and relevant messages to take away.	�	Focused symposia bring together presenters working on the same topic from diverse parts of the world. The abstract and presentations (subject to permissions) will be made available on the WCPT website after the congress. In addition, chairs will be expected to provide a session report which draws out the key insights and take-home messages, which will also be included in the congress proceedings.

Selection principles

The CPC is seeking sessions that comply with the submission guidelines and deliver against the following principles.

Explore: the most recent ideas, evidence, methods and areas of controversy in the literature related to outcomes for people and populations and to moving the profession forward.
Inspire: with a clear purpose and applicable outcomes for delegates.
Connect: related research and innovations, and internationally diverse delegates through active engagement.
Include: speakers with international experience and standing in the topic area, representing a range of global and possibly service user perspectives.
Impact: practice, education, research and/or policy by making clear the implications arising from the presentations.

Highest ever response to WCPT country profile annual survey

106 WCPT member organisations have responded to the annual country profile survey. This is the highest ever number of responses to the survey.

WCPT uses the responses provided in the survey to create country, regional, and global profiles of the physical therapy profession. WCPT member organisations can share this information with others - including their individual members, government departments, academic institutions, health care organisations - to demonstrate the role and contribution of the physical therapy profession to global health and well being.

Copies of the country profile surveys will be sent to all WCPT member organisations who completed the survey and published on WCPT's website in December.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is on 1 December.

The day brings together people from around the world to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic. www.who.int/campaigns/world-aids-day

Bursaries available to attend IFOMPT 2020 in Australia

The IFOMPT 2020 Committee have been allocated funds by the Melbourne Convention Bureau to award Bursaries for attendance at the IFOMPT 2020 Conference, 6-8 October 2020, in Melbourne, Australia.

The purpose of the award is to make a financial payment to the awardees which will help towards the costs of attending at IFOMPT 2020 Conference so that current research and clinical information regarding orthopaedic manual therapy can be disseminated to physiotherapists in countries which are not current members of IFOMPT.

Applications will be considered only from individuals based in Countries who are NOT member organisations of IFOMPT. Applicants from countries who are RIG’s will be considered.

Universal Health Coverage Day on 12 December is the annual rallying point for the growing movement for health for all. It marks the anniversary of the United Nations’ historic and unanimous endorsement of universal health coverage (UHC) in 2012.

PEDro: five top trials 2014-19

To celebrate PEDro’s 20th birthday the five most important randomised controlled trials in physical therapy published in the years 2014-2019 have been identified. The trials were nominated by PEDro users, and an independent panel of international trialists judged the nominations received.

These ground-breaking trials have been taken from a broad cross-section of physiotherapy practice. The trials answer important clinical questions that will change the way people are treated for a variety of conditions seen by physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals. All of them mark important milestones in the evolution of physiotherapy treatment.

Calling all film makers!

WHO is organising the first ever #HealthForAll film festival and is looking for compelling, inspiring, thought-provoking short films on a range of health topics.

The deadline to submit a short film is 30 January 2020. The list of selected videos will be announced in March 2020 and the selections screened in Geneva in May, to coincide with the 73rd World Health Assembly.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is on 3 December

This year the the theme for IDPD is: Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda. It focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as anticipated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognises disability as a cross-cutting issue, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Surveys reveal global state of the physical therapy profession

Responses to the latest World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) survey reveal a significant rise in the number of physical therapists who are members of their national organsiation.

WCPT publishes data from its member organisations every year on a range of issues, including professional regulation, practice, education, and the number of employed physical therapists. This data provides a comprehensive and valuable global profile of the profession.

The most recent data is based on surveys completed by 105 of WCPT’s 120 member organisations in mid-2019. The high response rate, 87.5%, demonstrates strong engagement between WCPT and its member organisations and data reliability. The data gives a global snapshot of the physical therapy profession across the world, showing variations in the density of physical therapists in different countries and between WCPT regions. Highlights of the 2019 data include:

70% of respondents said membership of their organisation had increased
58% of respondents said there was direct access in their country and people could refer themselves to a physical therapist without a referral
81% of respondents said there was no law preventing private practice in their country
globally, 66% of physical therapists are women – in three countries (Hungary, Myanmar, St Lucia) at least 90% of physical therapists are women

WCPT Chief Executive Jonathon Kruger said: ‘The responses to the surveys from our member organisations continue to provide rich and valuable international comparisons which WCPT and its members can use to influence policy decisions around health, health service delivery, human resource planning, and education.’

The country profile maps allow people to see how the global profession has evolved since 2013. The maps are an interactive resource that can be printed or downloaded, and can be accessed here.

Feedback from WCPT member organisations has been overwhelmingly positive:

Last call for focused symposia

With the submission deadline for focused symposium proposals on 31 January, you now have less than three weeks to be involved in one of the key sessions at congress.

The sessions include high profile speakers, draw large audiences, and aim to create insightful and engaging learning experiences that ultimately inform, inspire, involve and empower delegates.

Lasting 1.5 hours, each symposium is organised by a recognised expert in the field who leads a coherent session with 3-4 speakers working together and engaging with the audience to draw out the relevance, challenges, applicability and take-home messages. The submissions should address the topic from an international/diverse perspective by including presentations from a range of countries and preferably from three different WCPT regions.

All submissions will be notified of the outcome on 26 March 2020.

Focused symposia topics

The call is open to any topic relevant to the profession. However, the Congress Programme Committee (CPC) is particularly interested in proposals that address any of the following areas identified through the WCPT congress market research survey:

professional challenges across all areas, such as diversity and inclusion, quality assurance, implicit bias, mental health, and wellbeing
how physical therapy needs to change to address global health issues, such as the demands of an ageing population, multi-morbidity and topics identified in the Rehabilitation 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals
the unique contribution of physical therapists in the physical activity agenda
challenging perceptions of pain management across the lifespan and across all fields of practice
innovative approaches to address policy and advocacy issues, such as health system funding, cost-effectiveness and the unique role of physical therapy.

Where applicable to the topic, priority will be given to symposia that include perspectives from low-resource countries.

Selection principles

The CPC is seeking sessions that comply with the submission guidelines and deliver against the following principles.

Explore: the most recent ideas, evidence, methods and areas of controversy in the literature related to outcomes for people and populations and to moving the profession forward.
Inspire: with a clear purpose and applicable outcomes for delegates.
Connect: related research and innovations, and internationally diverse delegates through active engagement.
Include: speakers with international experience and standing in the topic area, representing a range of global and possibly service user perspectives.
Impact: practice, education, research and/or policy by making clear the implications arising from the presentations.

Name change ahead for global physical therapy body

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) will be changing its name to World Physiotherapy later this year.

World Physiotherapy will be used for all externally-facing communications and materials. World Confederation for Physical Therapy will continue to be used for all legal and governance matters.

WCPT admits new members

On 1 January 2020 three new member organisations were admitted to the World Confederation for Physical Therapy by electronic vote of the membership.

The new member organisations are:

French National Council of Physiotherapists (Conseil national de l'ordre des masseurs-kinésithérapeutes)
Polish Chamber of Physiotherapists (Krajowa Izba Fizjoterapeutów)
Order of Physiotherapists in Romania (Colegiul Fizioterapeu?ilor din România)

WCPT now has 121 member organisations representing more than 625,000 physical therapists worldwide.

AEF celebrates 50th anniversary

The Spanish Association of Physiotherapists, Asociación Española de Fisioterapeutas (AEF), recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The celebration took place at the 16th national congress of AEF, in collaboration with the Galician Physiotherapy Professional Association, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. More than 600 physical therapists attended the congress, which took as its theme healthy and active aging.

Second International Conference on Physical Therapy in Oncology

Physical therapists play a pivotal role in helping patients cope with side- and long-term effects of cancer and cancer treatment such as fatigue, deconditioning, musculoskeletal impairments and lymphedema.

Physical therapy in oncology has made marked steps forward in the past two decades.

This second International Conference on Physical Therapy in Oncology (ICPTO) aims to bring together physical therapists from around the globe, to share knowledge, exchange best practice, and update knowledge based on recent scientific developments.

World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is on 4 February.

Marking its 20th anniversary in 2020, World Cancer Day is the global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and has grown into a positive movement for everyone, everywhere to unite under one voice.

Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, gathering communities, organisations and individuals in schools, businesses, hospitals, marketplaces, parks, community halls, places of worship - in the streets and online - acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the global impact of cancer.

COVID-19

With the fast evolving global situation created by the spread of COVID-19, we are aware that many of you have been impacted by the pandemic and the uncertainty it has created. WCPT and the congress programme committee will continue to monitor the situation relating to COVID-19, but for now planning is proceeding for an exciting WCPT congress in Dubai next April and we will advise you if there are any changes likely to impact the event.

Call for abstracts opens

The call for abstracts for poster and platform presentations is now open. The deadline is 30 July.

The WCPT congress offers you a unique opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession’s largest international meeting. Whether you have been working on a research project or have an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to share, WCPT is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit their abstracts.

Abstracts are invited that:

report on the latest research with original scientific data
address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Resources for abstract submitters

If you have limited experience of abstract submissions, presenting at a WCPT congress or if English is not your first language, we have put together several tools to help you.

An abstract mentoring programme is in place until 25 June. It aims to help authors present their material clearly and concisely before submitting an abstract to the formal abstract review process.

Selection criteria

Submitted abstracts will go through a blind peer-review process carried out by international reviewers.

The following principles will be used to review abstracts.

Does the report address a "significant" or "important" issue?
Do the methods/approach enable the question to be answered rigorously?
Have the data/findings been interpreted appropriately?
Are the contents of the abstract clear and logical?

World PT Day materials available in more than 50 languages

This year’s World PT Day materials have been translated into more than 50 languages – from Albanian to Vietnamese.

The translations have been kindly provided by volunteers from World Physiotherapy member organisations and national physiotherapy associations, and by individual physiotherapists. All the translations have been published on the World Physiotherapy website and shared on social media.

Emma Stokes, World Physiotherapy president, said: “It’s great to see so many of our member organisations and individual physiotherapists getting involved in World PT Day and helping raise the profile of the physiotherapy profession.

“There is no better way to show how inclusive our profession is than being able to share the World PT Day materials in a range of languages and to reach people in so many countries.

“Many of us have been affected by COVID-19, personally and professionally. It’s important we take time today to think about our friends and colleagues who have died or are living with the consequences of COVID-19.”

The World PT Day materials are available, or in production, in 19 of the top 20 most spoken languages in the world:

The theme for World PT Day 2020 is rehabilitation after COVID-19 and includes infographics and posters aimed at the general public promoting the role of physiotherapy in rehabilitation after COVID-19, and infographics focusing on the delivery of physiotherapy via telehealth. There is also a resource list for facts, research findings, statistics and articles to help you demonstrate the contribution of physiotherapists.

World PT Day toolkit
The World PT Day toolkit includes a range of materials to share the campaign in your country/territory.
As part of the response to COVID-19, many countries/territories have introduced restrictions about holding large events and gatherings. Please consider this when making plans for World PT Day and make sure you follow any guidelines in your country/territory about social distancing.
You may want to consider developing campaigns and activities on social media, radio and TV.

WCPT E-Update: COVID-19 resources

COVID-19 - the response from the global physiotherapy profession

This E-Update includes information and resources about COVID-19.

Many WCPT member organisations and their members are involved with responses to COVID-19 across a range of settings. We have collated information and resources about COVID-19 for physiotherapists on our website and have highlighted some of these in this E-Update.

We know some physiotherapists are already working on issues related to COVID-19, for example, telehealth, changes to education provision, health and wellbeing, returning to fitness, flexibility, strength, coordination, endurance, stamina.

Guidelines for physiotherapy management of COVID-19 in acute hospital settings

An international team of expert researchers and clinicians in the intensive care and acute cardiorespiratory fields have produced guidelines, endorsed by WCPT and others, for Physiotherapy management for COVID-19 in the acute hospital setting.

Thank you to all the people who have provided and are working on translations. The guidelines are now available in:

Education and professional development

Our partners Physiopedia have produced a package of resources to help in COVID-19 knowledge translation. WCPT has provided support to Physiopedia to make sure these resources are free for physiotherapists to access and use, regardless of where they live and work.

The Physiopedia free online programme of COVID-19 courses cover COVID-19, infection prevention and control, the role of physiotherapy, and respiratory management of people with COVID-19.

WHO information and resources

WHO has a dedicated COVID-19 area on their website, with daily situation reports and regular updates. WHO has produced a report on Strategic preparedness and response plan for the new coronavirus

There is advice for the public on protecting yourself and they have produced a Handwashing video as well as myth busters.

The technical guidance section includes infection and prevention advice, advice for health workers including, rights, roles and responsibilities, maintaining good mental health, and patient management.

WHO’s online courses relevant to COVID-19 are available in a range of languages.

WCPT E-Update: #PPE4PT campaign launches

WCPT launches advocacy campaign in support of access to PPE

Physiotherapists have a critical role to play in maintaining the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities around the world during the coronavirus pandemic.

But many physiotherapists, like their colleagues in other healthcare roles, are being placed in unacceptable risk because they are not being provided with the correct personal protective equipment they need to do their jobs.

To help address this WCPT is launching a #PPE4PT campaign pack, with materials in English, French, and Spanish:

factsheets about airborne protection, droplet protection and recommendations for physiotherapists
videos with subtitles
advocacy toolkit
letter addressed to government health ministers for use by WCPT member organisations

These can all be used to support physiotherapists in different countries and raise the profile of physiotherapists and their role in the response to COVID-19.

COVIDPhysio Registry

The COVIDPhysio Registry is a register of physiotherapy-related work in progress in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It includes projects such as guidelines, policy statements, campaigns, online continuing professional development, research, new education delivery and assessment methods, and the translation of material, providing a hub to support opportunities for collaboration and to avoid duplication of effort.

We urge all those who are involved in COVID-19 projects to log their project on the registry as it will be a valuable resource for the global physiotherapy community.

Entries can be made using the online form and a record of projects and activities will be updated and published frequently.

WCPT has published its second briefing paper as part of the response by the global physiotherapy profession to COVID-19.

The briefing paper focuses on rehabilitation and the vital role of physiotherapy and looks at:

rehabilitation of people after COVID-19
people living with a disability and frail older people: immediate and episodic rehabilitation
people with short-term rehabilitation needs where routine care has been suspended

WCPT calls on WHA73 to expand funding for rehabilitation

WCPT submitted a statement to last week's World Health Assembly calling on its members to commit to expanding funding for rehabilitation, as part of the global response to COVID-19.

Emma Stokes, WCPT president, said: ‘This is both a short-term measure so the human cost of this pandemic can be minimised, but also to ensure rehabilitation services are established as a key pillar of routine universal health coverage within national health systems across the globe.

‘Physiotherapy has a critical role to play in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the global community. However, with many services suspended during the period of physical distancing, people will likely experience a deterioration of other conditions unrelated to COVID-19.'

Survey: help us write history

WCPT has launched a survey with the International Physiotherapy History Association (IPHA) to gather information on how COVID-19 is redefining physiotherapy education, practice and the profession.

Reflecting that the impact of COVID-19 may change lives and communities forever, WCPT and IPHA would like to gather stories and experiences from physiotherapists around the world to help create a snapshot of the impact of COVID-19. Stories and experiences will be gathered at future dates to make sure we continue to collate the impact of COVID-19.

REMINDER: WCPT appeals committee - call for applications

The deadline to submit applications for the WCPT appeals committee is 3 June 2020.

The role of the appeals committee is to consider and determine the outcome of any appeals by organisations against membership-related decisions by the membership committee and the WCPT Board, in accordance with the constitution and relevant regulations. As the committee is being established for the first time there are five vacancies - one from each WCPT region. Applicants need to have prior experience considering and determining outcomes of complaints or appeals and must be supported by their national member organisation.

World No Tobacco Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) has put together a toolkit of materials to mark this year's World No Tobacco Day on 31 May #TobaccoExposed.

This year WHO is launching a counter-marketing campaign in response to the tobacco and related industries’ systematic and sustained tactics to hook a new generation of users.The global campaign aims to debunk myths and expose devious tactics employed by these industries. It will provide young people with the knowledge required to easily detect industry manipulation and equip them with the tools to rebuff such tactics, thereby empowering young people to stand up against them. This is especially important right now as studies show that smokers have a higher risk for a severe case of coronavirus. WHO calls on all young people to join the fight to become a tobacco-free generation.

Key speakers for WCPT Congress 2021 announced

WCPT is pleased to announce the opinion leaders and innovators in physical therapy who will present the key sessions at the world’s largest gathering of the profession – the WCPT Congress, to be held in Dubai, 8 – 10 April 2021.

The congress programme includes 12 confirmed focused symposia featuring 55 speakers from around the world. Focused symposia are core sessions where cutting edge relevant topics will be explored from an international and diverse perspective. High profile speakers will create insightful and engaging learning experiences that ultimately inform, inspire, involve and empower delegates.

“We were incredibly pleased with the breadth and quality of the many proposals we received. The focused symposia to be presented in Dubai combine truly global perspectives with content that we believe represents professional challenges that physiotherapists around the world are facing today. Call for abstract submissions is open NOW

As a result of moving congress to an online event, the congress programme committee has agreed to re-open the call for abstracts for World Physiotherapy Congress 2021.

The abstract submission system is open now and the deadline for submissions is 24 September 2020.

People who have previously submitted an abstract are able to access and edit their submission before 24 September 2020.

All abstract submitters will be notified of the outcome of their submission on 14 January 2021.

Abstract mentoring closes soon

The abstract mentoring programme closes on 25 June.

WCPT’s mentoring programme aims to help authors present their material clearly and concisely prior to submitting their abstracts to the formal abstract review process. The programme may be particularly helpful for those:

who don’t have local/national research support networks
where English is not the first language
with little experience of abstract submissions

Participants should prepare their abstract according to the submission guidelines and forward it to the mentoring programme coordinators (abstractmentoring@wcpt.org) before the 25 June deadline. Feedback will be provided, with advice on how the presentation and language used could be enhanced.

Please note that the mentoring process is entirely separate from the formal abstract submission and review process. Requesting mentoring assistance and gaining feedback from that process does not guarantee that an abstract will be accepted for presentation at the WCPT Congress 2021.

The WCPT congress offers you a unique opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession’s largest international meeting. The congress programme committee (CPC) for WCPT Congress 2021 is now recruiting reviewers of abstracts submitted for presentation.

You will need to have experience in reviewing abstracts or journal articles and be available to review abstract submissions from 17 August 2020. All reviews must be completed by 11 September 2020.

If you are interested in acting as an abstract reviewer please complete this short survey to register your interest before Thursday 16 July 2020: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/wcpt2021-reviewers.

The number of abstracts sent to reviewers will depend on their area of expertise and the number of submissions received.

World health professionals calling governments to prioritise support for healthcare workers in the front line against coronavirus

Geneva, Switzerland, 4 March 2020 - The world’s health professionals are calling for governments to support healthcare staff in the battle against Covid-19

The World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA), which represents 31 million healthcare professionals, stands in solidarity with all healthcare workers across the globe who are on the front line in the fight to contain the current coronavirus epidemic.

All around the world, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, dentists and physicians are focusing their efforts on preventing, diagnosing, containing, and treating Covid-19 patients.

They are putting themselves at risk as they battle to protect their communities, often without the required personal protective equipment, such as masks and hazardous material suits, that can keep them safe from infection and therefore able to carry on their vital work.

The WHPA is calling on governments and healthcare organisations to support front line healthcare workers in any way they can, but especially and urgently through the supply of crucial personal protective equipment.

They should also ensure that staff are getting adequate breaks during their shifts, and time off between shifts, to be able to carry on in what could be a long-term global crisis.

Working in such conditions also takes its toll on the psychological health of staff, so appropriate support services for staff must also be put in place as a priority.

Dr. Otmar Kloiber, WHPA Chair and Secretary General of the World Medical Association, said: “It is sad that nurses and physicians died during this crisis and probably more will die. Deaths which may have been avoidable with better emergency preparedness. This crisis should be a wake up call for politicians and societies to make the necessary investment in emergency preparedness and to look into the vulnerability of our supply chains.”

ICN Chief Executive Officer Howard Catton said: “We are calling on governments to maximise support for nurses and other health professionals in the front line against coronavirus, both in terms of providing the necessary protective equipment and recognising the psychological pressures they are under and addressing them.

It is also essential that governments in their top-level decision making on combatting the virus, include the experience and leadership skills of nurses. Nurses’ advice, based on their observations from the front line, are invaluable in containing the virus, as we have seen with previous epidemics.”

FIP Chief Executive Officer, Dr Catherine Duggan said: “Pharmacists and the pharmacy workforce at community and hospital pharmacies and clinical biology laboratories are preventing the spread of the new coronavirus disease, advising the public, and supporting the efficient management of infection by healthcare systems. Since pharmacies are often the first point of contact with the health system, we call on governments to support them in these roles and to count on pharmacists worldwide as key partners in the global effort to contain the outbreak.”

World PT Day 2020 is a resounding success

World PT Day was celebrated around the world on 8 September.

The toolkit is now available in over 50 languages and materials have been downloaded 21,000 times.

The materials were developed to mark World PT Day, with an emphasis on the role of physiotherapy in rehabilitation after COVID-19 and the delivery of physiotherapy via digital health solutions, including telehealth. But we encourage physiotherapists around the world to continue using the materials as they will remain current throughout the pandemic.

World Physiotherapy has published its fifth briefing paper in a series exploring the impact of COVID-19. The latest looks at the pandemic''s impact on fragile health systems and vulnerable communities, and the role of physiotherapists in the delivery of rehabilitation. While many fragile systems and vulnerable communities are located in low and middle income countries (LMICs), they can exist in all countries.

We are World Physiotherapy

We have launched our new brand and website.

This exciting announcement is the result of months of planning and hard work. The proposed name change was raised during the general meeting in Geneva in May 2019, when we highlighted a number of reasons why it was important to consider a name change. Following this and a subsequent survey of our member organisations, the board endorsed the proposal to change the name to World Physiotherapy for all externally-facing materials. We will continue to use World Confederation for Physical Therapy for all legal and governance matters.

NEW briefing paper on impact of COVID-19 on physiotherapy students

World Physiotherapy has published its third briefing paper in the series looking at the immediate impact of COVID-19 on students and the response to delivering physiotherapist entry level education.

3,840 students enrolled in over 400 higher education institutions across 52 countries participated in a survey on the early experiences and consequences of COVID-19 on entry level physiotherapist education. The responses provided an insight into how students experienced this period of uncertainty and change as the programmes they followed resolved the immediate challenges and addressed short-term issues. The survey also captured students' concerns and recommendations for the future post-pandemic return.

World Physiotherapy Europe region congress goes virtual

The World Physiotherapy Europe region has announced its 5th European congress will be a virtual event.

Following the global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Physiotherapy Europe region 2020 congress will still take place 11-12 September 2020. The theme of the event is physiotherapy education.

Registration fees have been significantly reduced to offer more people the opportunity to take part. A further reduction on fees is available for World Physiotherapy and ENPHE members, attendees from lower income countries, and students.

Register now to benefit from the early bird registration fees. Deadline for registration has been extended to 31 July 2020.

World PT Day 2020

The theme for World PT Day 2020 will focus on rehabilitation and COVID-19.

The toolkit for this year''s World PT Day will be available soon on the World Physiotherapy website. It includes infographics and posters aimed at the general public promoting the role of physiotherapy in rehabilitation and COVID-19, and infographics focusing on the delivery of physiotherapy via telehealth.

Volunteers are already working on translations of the World PT Day materials into Arabic, Bangla, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, French, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Kurdish, Latvian, Montenegrin, Norway, Romanian, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Vietnamese. If you are interested in translating any of the materials, please contact communications@world.physio

As part of the response to COVID-19, many countries have introduced restrictions about holding large events and gatherings. Please consider this when making plans for World PT Day. We will be producing a series of graphics to promote the day via social media.

New brand and website for global physiotherapy body

World Physiotherapy, the global body for national physiotherapy associations, has launched a new brand and website.

Emma Stokes, World Physiotherapy president, said: “Earlier this year we announced we would be changing our name and it’s exciting to now share our new brand. This is an opportunity for us to clearly explain who we are and how we support the global physiotherapy profession. The new brand is fresh, vibrant, sharp, and concise.

“We’ve been through a lot of change and progress in the past five years and the launch of the new brand and website is the next step.

“The website showcases our member organisations and highlights areas of our work in different parts of the world. We’ve added new sections focusing on our advocacy and project work, reorganised our resources to make it easier for people to find policy, guidelines, and information, and refreshed the content about World PT Day.”

Just published! Report on digital physical therapy practice

The WCPT executive board has published a report setting out the future of digital physical therapy practice.

The report, jointly produced by WCPT and the International Network of Physiotherapy Regulatory Authorities (INPTRA), recognises the development and implementation of digital physical therapy practice and sets out key considerations and recommendations to ensure the global physical therapy profession is able to maximize the opportunities that digital practice offers.

Jonathon Kruger, WCPT chief executive officer, said: ‘This is a timely report that will help our member organisations and their individual members. Many physical therapists are grappling with the complexity of COVID-19 and the challenges of working in a digital space. This report clearly articulates the issues physical therapists will need to consider as they shift to working virtually to provide telehealth for people in need.'

Personal protective equipment for health workers

Global health organisations are calling for healthcare workers to be given adequate protection.

WCPT has issued a joint press release with the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) calling on governments and healthcare organisations to support front line healthcare workers in any way they can, but especially and urgently through the supply of crucial personal protective equipment (PPE). They are also asking to ensure that staff are getting adequate breaks during their shifts, and time off between shifts, to be able to carry on in what could be a long-term global crisis: www.wcpt.org/node/30125

WHO is also calling on industry and governments to increase manufacturing by 40 per cent to meet rising global demand to address the shortage of PPE, which is endangering health workers worldwide. WHO has warned that severe and mounting disruption to the global supply of PPE – caused by rising demand, panic buying, hoarding and misuse – is putting lives at risk from COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. http://bit.ly/2U15TA4

Physiopedia: free online COVID-19 course

To contribute towards the global effort to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Physiopedia is providing a free online programme of courses on its online learning platform at Physioplus.

The aim of these courses is to provide a practicing physiotherapist/physical therapist with the knowledge, practices and skills to allow them to play a proactive role in global and local efforts to reduce the impact of COVID-19.

The call for abstracts for poster and platform presentations is now open. The deadline is 30 July.

The WCPT congress offers you a unique opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession’s largest international meeting. Whether you have been working on a research project or have an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to share, WCPT is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit their abstracts.

Abstracts are invited that:

report on the latest research with original scientific data
address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Focused symposia announced

Key speakers and sessions have been announced for congress.

The congress programme includes 12 confirmed focused symposia featuring 55 speakers from around the world. Focused symposia are core sessions where cutting edge relevant topics will be explored from an international and diverse perspective. High profile speakers will create insightful and engaging learning experiences that ultimately inform, inspire, involve and empower delegates.

Abstract presentation formats

There are two main ways to present your abstract at congress, either as a platform or poster presentation.

To help you decide which format is right for your abstract, watch the video by congress programme committee member Jackie Whittaker: How to choose the right format - platform presentation, printed poster, e-poster

Poster presentations

Printed posters: changed daily, they are grouped by topic within the poster area in the exhibition hall, with presenters attending their poster for 45 minutes for discussion with delegates.
E-posters: available for the first time at a WCPT congress, they will be accessible through terminals and grouped by topic, with each presenter given a short presentation slot. Delegates can search the e-posters by keywords and topic areas.

Platform presentations

State of the art: 12-minute platform presentations from the highest quality, cutting edge abstracts that are likely to influence practice, with an 18-minute moderated discussion at the end led by a leader in the field.
Classic: eight platform presentations of eight minutes, followed by three minutes for questions in each presentation.
Rapid five: a platform presentation session of 10 abstracts each delivering key messages using no more than five slides in five minutes (5 x 5), with moderated discussion times.

Platform and poster presentations are considered by the congress programme committee to be of equal standing and judged by the same criteria. Although you may indicate your preferred presentation format when submitting, there is limited space for platform presentations in the programme and many more posters can be accommodated. The decision of what format to assign to any abstract rests with the congress programme committee.

Resources for abstract submitters

If you have limited experience of abstract submissions, presenting at a WCPT congress, or if English is not your first language, we have put together several tools to help you.

An abstract mentoring programme is in place until 25 June. It aims to help authors present their material clearly and concisely before submitting an abstract to the formal abstract review process.

Share your experience of digital practice in our online survey

World Physiotherapy is producing a series of briefing papers exploring the impact of COVID-19 on education, practice, and advocacy issues.

We are now working on a briefing paper on digital practice. We want to draw on the experiences of physiotherapists and include some case studies in the briefing paper.

Some countries/territories have had digital practice physiotherapy service provision, including telehealth, for some time. With the COVID-19 pandemic, such services have seen a major increase in prevalence and the diversification in populations served. In addition, it has emerged as a new model for service delivery in other countries/territories.

World Physiotherapy is keen to understand more about the lessons learned this year and the implications for the future of physiotherapy and service delivery. In addition to input from our member organisations and subgroups, we are gathering feedback from individual physiotherapists via a short survey.

The World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) is holding a Stand Up for Positive Practice Environments webinar as part of their campaign to improve work environments for health professionals around the world.

Over 1,800 abstracts submitted for World Physiotherapy Congress 2021

A total of 1,867 abstracts have been submitted for World Physiotherapy Congress 2021 online.

Of the submitted abstracts, women submitted 57% of the abstracts and men submitted 37% of the abstracts, 6% of submitters did not give their gender. Globally, 66% of physiotherapists are women.

The submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed by 400 volunteer reviewers over the next few weeks. All abstract submitters will be notified of the outcome on 14 January 2021.

HI launches handbook on early rehabilitation in conflicts and disasters

Early rehabilitation in conflicts and disasters is the focus of a set of e-learning materials launched by Humanity & Inclusion (HI).

Early rehabilitation for people with traumatic injuries in conflicts and disasters is now recognised as being an integral part of the recovery process. When an emergency strikes, there is a huge surge in the need for early rehabilitation. However, the majority of rehabilitation professionals in countries that experience such emergencies do not have all the skills needed to treat all of the injuries.

HI, with support from AO Foundation and other leading rehabilitation organisations (CBM, ICRC, Livability, MSF-France, WHO), has produced a handbook and e-learning materials. This is the world’s first educational resource to help rehabilitation professionals develop and deliver high quality early rehabilitation intervention.

WCPT was involved in the review of this project and has endorsed the materials.

International Women's Day

International Women's Day on 8 March is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The campaign theme for 2020 is An equal world is an enabled world. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality - to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.

Globally 66% of physical therapists are female - watch out for WCPT's social media posts on the day.

World TB Day

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is commemorated each year on 24 March to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic.

TB remains the world’s deadliest infectious killer. Each day, over 4,000 people lose their lives to TB and close to 30,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable disease. Physical therapy can play an important role in the rehabilitation of patients with TB.

WCPT briefing paper on impact of COVID-19 on entry-level education

WCPT has published a briefing paper on the immediate impact on the higher education sector and response to delivering physiotherapist entry level education.

The paper has been informed by an online survey, which was one of the first activities of a global task force on physiotherapist education launched by WCPT in April 2020. The responses provide insights into how the programmes have resolved the immediate challenges, how they have addressed near-term issues and, at the date of the survey responses, what barriers they anticipate to a return to post-pandemic operations.

The briefing paper is the first in a series planned by WCPT exploring the response of the global physiotherapy profession to COVID-19. The next briefing paper will focus on rehabilitation.

WCPT appeals committee: call for applications

WCPT is seeking applications for the WCPT appeals committee.

The purpose of the committee is to consider and determine the outcome of any appeals by organisations against membership-related decisions by the membership committee and the WCPT Board, in accordance with the constitution and relevant regulations. As the committee is being established for the first time there are five vacancies - one from each WCPT region. Applicants need to have prior experience considering and determining outcomes of complaints or appeals and must be supported by their national member organisation.

COVID-19: resources for physiotherapists

WCPT has launched a #PPE4PT campaign and created a global information hub on its website with information and resources about COVID-19 relevant to the physiotherapy profession.

Resources have been collated from reputable sources and organised into categories including:

COVIDPhysio Registry

The COVIDPhysio Registry is a register of physiotherapy-related work in progress in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several items have already been added and include projects such as guidelines, policy statements, campaigns, online continuing professional development, research, new education delivery and assessment methods, and the translation of material, providing a hub to support opportunities for collaboration and to avoid duplication of effort.

We urge all those who are involved in COVID-19 projects to log their project on the registry as it will be a valuable resource for the global physiotherapy community.

Entries can be made using the online form and a record of projects and activities will be updated and published frequently.

Survey: health and safety of health workers

An international group of experts convened by the World Health Organization and International Labour Organization are conducting a survey to collect data about risk factors and their controls for health and safety of health workers in COVID-19. The data collected through this survey will inform high level actions and recommendations through the expert group, and additional comments are welcomed in the “Other” fields, as well as any follow-up you would like to send directly.

COVID-19 added to abstract submission topic list

The congress programme committee has added COVID-19 to the abstract submission topic list.

Shane Patman, chair of the congress programme committee, said the committee wanted to make sure physiotherapists' experience of being involved in the response to COVID-19 was reflected in the content of next year's congress #WorldPhysio2021.

Abstract submission deadline nears

The deadline to submit an abstract for poster and platform presentations is 30 July.

There are just over two weeks left for you to submit an abstract for presentation at the World Physiotherapy Congress 2021. Take this opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession’s largest international meeting. Whether you have been working on a research project or have an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to share, World Physiotherapy is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit their abstracts.

Abstracts are invited that:

report on the latest research with original scientific data
address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Call for abstracts - last chance!

There are just three days left to submit an abstract before the 30 July deadline.

This is your opportunity to present to a global audience. Whether you have research to present or an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to showcase - World Physiotherapy is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit an abstract.

The congress programme committee (CPC) is looking for abstracts that:

report on the latest research with original scientific data
address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Abstracts will be delivered as either platform, printed poster or e-poster presentations, with all considered by the CPC to be of equal standing and judged by the same criteria. You can indicate your preferred format when submitting, but inevitably there is limited space for platform presentations in the programme and many more posters can be accommodated. The decision of what format to assign to any abstract rests with the CPC.
