I take New Year's pretty seriously. Yes I know it is an arbitrary day on the calendar and that only 8% of people keep their "resolutions." It is also a moment in time when we all collectively decide to create a fresh start. There is power in that.

This is an opportunity to let go of old habits, calendar obligations and beliefs that aren't moving you toward your dreams. It is a chance to recreate your priorities and celebrate your success.

Vision boarding is also one of my most favorite creative projects of the year. I am not a big arts and crafts kind of gal but there is something undeniably healing about making art out of your dreams.

What we put our attention on grows, so it's important to take the time to get clear on what you want to create this year and this DECADE.

I'm with my family in Florida enjoying some sunshine and watching Jasper experience all the Christmas joy. He is particularly fascinated by the ornaments on the tree (and my constant caroling).

I made the decision this season that the only thing I am committing to is a low stress holiday.

One thing that can feel high demand though is bringing food to events that will nourish your loved ones and taste amazing.

It's fun to indulge a bit during this time of year. It’s also nice to have some options that will keep you free to spread holiday cheer and not end up in fetal position on the couch.

I asked fellow zivaTEACHER Kelsey Mathes for some of her favorite holiday recipes and we're in luck -- they are a dream. All of her recipes are also gluten free and inspired by Ayurveda so you can feel good about bringing them to your holiday table.

Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes

Step 1: Cut sweet potatoes (I usually make 2 or 3 at a time) lengthwise, grease a baking sheet with coconut oil. Place next to each other and Bake at 350 until cooked through - you'll know it's cooked through when you can easily get a butter knife into the thickest part of the meat of the potato. Likely you'll also see caramelized sugar around the edges of the potatoes too.

Cook time is about an hour or so depending on the size of the sweet potatoes. I tend to use the big ones.

Step 2: While they're cooking, you can prep what you'd like to mix into the sweet potato later. Combine your preferences into a bowl.

Base veggies I like:
Diced Red/Orange Sweet Pepper
Chopped Crimini Mushrooms
Baby Spinach Leaves (these cook themselves on bake #2)

Optional Add-Ons based on dietary needs/preferences:
Shredded Roast Chicken
Feta or Shredded Asiago Cheese
Avocado (best to use a semi-firm avocado, cubed)

Spices:
Salt & Pepper to taste
Turmeric (about 1/2tsp) per whole potato

Step 3: Once the potatoes are done cooking, let them cool until you can touch them (maybe 20 min or so). Using a spoon, carve out the middle of the potato and add to the mix you've created of other veggies, etc. Be careful not to puncture the potato skin. Feel free to leave a layer of potato in the skin.

Mix all the ingredients together and then stuff your potato skins. Throw them back in the oven for about 15 minutes until they're warm all the way through. Enjoy!

I love this quote by American philosopher Will Durant very much. Such a simple concept -- how we fill our days, how we spend our time, the habits we commit to create who we are.

It is time for us to wake up, Mia.

Australia is proof of that.

As I'm sure you've seen, Australia was ravaged by wildfires and now floods and mudslides. Many people are taking these fires as a wake up call to our species.

We need to take action, both by supporting organizations who are helping, and by coming together and directing our energy to those who need support.

You are invited to join me tomorrow for a global mass meditation to create personal healing and to support those who are suffering. No prior training is necessary. I will offer simple instruction before we turn inward and create a global cognitive cohesion before blasting Australia with some much needed love.

It will be a healing for the people who have lost homes and livelihoods.

A service for the billion animals who lost their lives in the blaze.

For the farmers who have lost their herds and means to produce food for the country.

And to offer thanks for the bravery of the volunteer fire fighters and the generosity that has been alive since the fires first started in July.

Hi Mia,

Did you know in a former life I used to be an acting teacher?! My students used to come to me with one of the following statements:

"Ooof Emily, New York is so hard. There isn't enough work, I never get any opportunities and things are so expensive -- I'm moving to LA." To which I would say, "good luck."

Then another student would come to me and say:

"Emily! I had a crazy dream that I was living in the Hollywood Hills and got a job in this movie and... I'm moving to LA!" To which I would say, "How can I help?"

Same plane ticket, very different journey.

What's the difference? One person is moving toward the positive and the other is moving away from the negative.

It is best to move toward the things we want in life, not away from the ones we don't. What we put our attention on grows.

This is a profoundly useful tip for life but also for your meditation practice. In meditation, there is no need to move away from your thoughts. Instead you move toward the tool or technique you are using.

My favorite analogy for this? A party. A very chill meditation party.

Now in this party, you won't need to pull out the good wine glasses or your trusty box of Twister.

All you need is a chair and the ability to think a thought. So if you want to learn how to throw a meditation party in your mind, the video below covers:

You may have seen some emails about big changes coming to zivaLIVE, our in person meditation training.

I know I've been a bit cryptic over the past few weeks but the wait is over... Here's what I've been so excited to tell you.

As you know, zivaLIVE is our in person course where I give each student a personalized mantra and we spend a few days getting you self sufficient in the Ziva Technique. The personalized mantra and group meditation turns each person’s Ziva practice into a supercharged performance tool, more efficiently burning off stress day-to-day.

For a long time, we've been offering both our traditional 4 day zivaLIVE + our zivaLIVE Intensive, a condensed 2 day course only for graduates of zivaONLINE.

Something we quickly realized? The experience of the 2 day Intensive was richer than we ever imagined. Having foundational knowledge of the Ziva Technique, plus many meditations under your belt allowed the Intensive to go far deeper into the ancient knowledge than our regular zivaLIVE course where most people were just getting started.

We have decided to make an exciting change to the OG way to learn the Ziva Technique. So here's the news -- drumroll please:

Starting after April 5th, the pre-requisite for taking zivaLIVE will be our online course, zivaONLINE.

Prior to this change, the only pre-requisite to taking the live course was attending an Intro Talk. This is still the case for our next two courses!

So if you'd like to take zivaLIVE without first taking zivaONLINE, register ASAP for one of our last 2 Intro Talks EVER. Spots will go fast!

While I'm really excited to usher in this new change, I also want to celebrate the success that zivaLIVE has been since I started Ziva nine years ago.

When you feel really passionate about something, it's hard not to share it with the world. Especially after New Year's when we all have our shiny new healthy habits top of mind.

But has this scenario ever happened to you, Mia?

One of your friends comes to you really upset. Say they're suffering from insomnia and they mention "Life is really hard right now and I don't know what to do."

Now you think, "Hey! I just started [insert healthy habit] and I think it may help this situation."

But then your friend pushes back -- "You don't understand my pain, insomnia, stress..." They're clearly not interested in your suggestions.

"Yes Emily, that happens all the time!" You're yelling at your device right now.

Well here's why, Mia. Sometimes when people come to us with an issue, they're not looking for help. Often they are looking for what I call the "suffering trophy."

They need validation -- not advice.

As a meditation teacher, I've become quite skilled at identifying whether someone is asking for help or if they need someone to hear them out. That's why in this video I share some tools on:

• What question to ask to determine whether someone is asking for the suffering trophy
• How to identify something I call "worthy inquiry"
• The proper way to give someone the suffering trophy without "watering their weeds"

Hows your sleep, Mia?

I once went 18 months without sleeping through the night. I was even having dreams about being possessed (stressed much?).

I would've given anything to get a good night's sleep in that phase of my life. It’s one of the main reasons I started meditating eleven years ago even though at the time most people thought it was only for hippies and monks.

Since then there have been an extraordinary number of scientific studies concluding that meditation pretty much makes you a superhero.*

Of all the articles I read in women's magazines on how to be sexier when I was a teenager, none of them ever mentioned what I share in the excerpt below.

The one year anniversary of my bestselling book Stress Less, Accomplish More is coming -- and with it the launch of the NEW paperback version.

This timing is getting me nostalgic, and I wanted to share one of my very favorite passages from the book -- all about why detachment is sexy, and neediness is not (right in time for Valentine's Day).

Once you start to commit to your twice a day Z Technique (the trifecta of mindfulness, meditation and manifesting I teach in the book) you will start to see for yourself that you’re no longer under the illusion that your happiness exists on the other side of any person, place, thing, or achievement.

As a result, you’ll find yourself becoming more adaptable to the circumstances that surround you, rather than insisting that everyone else change. Because you’re no longer under the illusion that you’re dependent on anything external for your happiness, you’re no longer emotionally devastated when those things inevitably change or “fail you.” That’s not to say you won’t feel sadness or disappointment in certain situations, of course, but those fallible things will no longer have the power to control your mood the way they once did.

This reclaiming of your power is not some big, public proclamation where you announce to the world over social media, “Attention everyone: I’m taking my power back and I don’t need any of you!”

Tempting as that may be at times, what I’m talking about is actually a very subtle internal shift in your perception of what is necessary for you to feel a sense of fulfillment. Suddenly, you begin to carry yourself differently and interact with society in a more confident and self-assured way, all because you’ve embraced the beautiful and radical notion that you are enough.

Detachment is sexy; neediness is not. Rather than seeming desperate, a person who has tapped into the very source of bliss gives off an air of contentedness that projects unflappable self-confidence. And isn’t that the dream, after all—to be the person in the room who is most comfortable in their own skin? That’s what I mean by “taking your power back.” Instead of being dependent on other people’s decisions, judgments, and actions for your sense of happiness, you will have a healthy level of detachment with your potential romantic partners, with clients, with colleagues, with possessions, and with ambition.

You don’t need anyone’s approval to feel good about life, nor do you need any object or status symbol to feel complete. Happiness is truly an inside job...

How do you feel about birthdays, Mia?

I used to be a real brat on mine. But today is different. It isn't my birthday but it is the 1 year birthday of my book baby, Stress Less, Accomplish More.

It is fun to celebrate how far we've come since this was conceptualized over 4(!!) years ago.

The seed was planted way back when I was a fledgling meditation teacher teaching classes out of the Crunch Gym in the basement of my apartment building. There happened to be a literary agent who became a regular.

After the New York Times did a piece on Ziva and how meditation can improve your work performance (which at the time was a radical idea) the agent approached me saying she thought this would make a great book.

I was so naive. I thought, "Sure! I'll take a few weeks off from teaching, rent a cabin in the woods and write a book."

Cut to four years of proposals, pitches, writing and sooooo much editing... the book was born. And it came at the perfect time.

Because of you it debuted at #7 on Amazon, made 2 bestseller lists and sold over 53k copies. I fulfilled a lifelong dream of being on Good Morning America -- something I had imagined since I was a little girl watching it with my mama.

Hi Mia,

First, I love you. You are doing great. This is challenging. There is nothing wrong with you if you are feeling anxious or unsettled.

I am not here to lecture you on what you should or should not be doing. I am here to give you some love and some gifts to help us all through this time of uncertainty.

First let''s take a giant cleansing breath. Let your shoulders drop and remind yourself that everyone is doing the best they can with the tools and information they have.

It is hard to not have a spike in adrenaline and cortisol right now. If you use social media as a form of entertainment or escape from your already high demand life then scrolling for even a few seconds may only be adding fear on top of stress. It can be overwhelming.

Here are two beautiful re-frames that are helping me through this time.

1. Instead of judging the way other people are reacting, what if we see this global slowing as an act of kindness? For many of us, this is an inconvenience. We may lose some money, we may have to get creative with childcare, we stocked up some supplies, canceled some trips.

But the vast majority of us are and will be safe. Through that lens you can choose to see the self imposed quarantines as an act of kindness. A global loving gesture to keep the hospitals as empty as possible to care for those who truly need it now or in the future.

2. I heard someone say they are not interested in another September 11th (when the body feels trauma it remembers other times of trauma). But this person said they would love to see another Sept 12, or 13th or 14th. The way that the city, the country and the world came together to help each other heal.

Choosing to see this as a global act of kindness feels much better to me than stewing in fear or anger. These are uncharted waters we are entering into. So we as meditators have a responsibility to stick to our practice, to reach out to others who are not as fortunate as we are to see if there is anything we can do to help. That doesn''t have to be face to face contact. It can be a video call, a donation or a simple "how are you feeling?" text.

We don''t yet know the impact of coronavirus but we do know isolation and stress are not good for us humans and there IS something we can do about it.

To that end I have 2 gifts for you.

It is a beautiful sunny day here in NYC. For that I am thankful. My son is full belly laughing and feeding my dog snacks. For that I am thankful. I had a FaceTime dinner party with friends last night. For that I am thankful.

"Stop trying to not be miserable."

This was a life-changing piece of advice I never knew I needed, Mia.

This paradoxical wisdom was gifted to me in India when I was on a 10 day silent meditation retreat.

As a meditation teacher with many years under my belt, I went in to the retreat a wee bit arrogant about how easy it would be for me.

Spoiler alert: it was not easy.

As the days passed, I grew more and more uncomfortable sitting on the floor with an erect spine. I shoved one pillow under my knees... then two. Pretty soon I was sitting amidst a pillow fortress, desperate to stop the searing pain.

A monk came over to me. He wasn''t supposed to be talking either. But he leaned down and whispered in my ear...

"Stop trying to not be miserable." *Mic drop*

Something shifted. Once I finally stopped chasing pleasure and avoiding pain, the whole experience changed for me. It went from agonizing to creating massive waves of bliss that flowed through me.

"If you can stop chasing pleasure and avoiding pain, you can become a master of anything."

The experience became euphoric. But only once I gave myself permission to truly feel what I was feeling so the pain could become a teacher.

Getting comfortable with discomfort isn''t easy. It''s also the #1 thing I am practicing right now. There really is no way around but through.

If you''re feeling scared, be scared.

If you are feeling sad, be sad.

If you are feeling angry, be angry.

If only for a moment, I am encouraging you to give yourself permission to be exactly where you are and feel all of it. Not intellectually. Notice what comes up in your heart.

Only once we listen to what the body is communicating will it be easier to put down the wine or the weed or the constant social media checking.

What happens if you cry? Or scream? Or write?

There is healing in this.

And even in your rage and sadness, ask yourself if you can extend some love to the people you may be angry at. Imagine the world leaders, politicians and CEOs who have created so many unsustainable systems -- and imagine their hearts opening, healing.

Imagine what is possible. For you and our species.

There is power in this.

Adaptation energy.

Have you ever heard of it, Mia?

It''s the reason why meditation is the best resilience training on the planet. But adaptation a few weeks ago meant something very different from what it means now.

Here''s my definition:

Adaptation energy is what allows us to be in flow, to surrender attachment to outcome and accept things as they are.

Here''s what adaptation energy looked like before quarantine.

It''s Monday morning -- your alarm doesn''t go off. Google Maps lies and tells you the commute will take 20 min, it takes 40. You stop to get a cup of coffee but they''re in the middle of brewing a new batch. You leave with no coffee but now you''re late to work and your boss yells at you. You''re brought into a surprise meeting where you''re put on the spot to provide a solution to a big problem. You have no words -- nothing comes to mind. You go home and stand in the kitchen, pouring yourself a drink. The glass drops and shatters...

THIS is the moment where you officially run out of adaptation energy. You start crying --maybe even cursing at the glass. It doesn''t matter that it''s $2 from the dollar store. You have nothing left to give -- this change in expectation took you over the edge.

So how do you refill your reservoirs of adaptation energy? Meditation. And we''ve never needed a larger reserve of adaptation energy than we do right now.

In the past 2 weeks, we''ve been dealing with a nonstop change of expectation. And if you''re not refilling your reservoirs every day, it probably feels like you''re running on empty. Our demands are bigger now so how can adaptation energy help?

Now, our demands look like working a full day from home while simultaneously navigating childcare.

It''s decreased natural sunlight and constant news briefings on the importance of social distancing.

It''s grocery shopping in a world where we''re afraid to touch and be touched.

We''ve never needed adaptation energy as a society more in my lifetime.

That''s why tomorrow''s Ziva Global Meditation will also be a class in Adaptation Energy. Make no mistake about it, Mia. There are two pandemics happening right now: one is a virus... the other is stress.

One of the people who has supported me and taught me more than I can communicate is my personal therapist and founder of the Paradox Process, Thomas Jones.

Thomas is the most emotionally intelligent person I have ever met. He has the ability, in just a few short minutes, to help you transform crippling anxiety into a sense of possibility. He kindly agreed to do an interview so I can share his tools with you.

Working with Thomas has been one of the most profound things that''s ever happened to me. He is a master at helping people take authorship of their lives by teaching you to not only feel your feelings, but use your experiences to catapult change in your life.

He''s also given me powerful tools to process my feelings in times of extreme emotional upheaval -- something I know we could all benefit from right now. And Mia, he really delivered.

In our interview, Thomas walks me through an exercise -- a way to process your feelings and clear the emotional charge so you can see the truth and what is possible.

Like meditation, this exercise is simple -- but don''t confuse simplicity for weakness. In my experience, the most profound tools are the simplest.

He also gives us a 2 minute challenge that can turn your whole day around. PLUS he shares the exercise he gave me and my husband which is coming in reeeaaal handy during this quarantine. If you''re quarantined with a partner, you''ll want to stick around until the end!

Thomas gives a reminder of why we''re all feeling so much fear right now in the first place: because we''re hardwired for self-preservation during extraordinary demand. So if you feel yourself being more negative or fearful than normal, there is nothing wrong with you. That''s Nature doing its job to protect you.

The good news? We can take charge of our internal experience. But first we have to become aware of it in order to change it.

Oof, how does that make you feel? Does that inspire confidence that you should start practicing the most important tool for mental hygiene we have available? Of course not.

Our language matters. Did you know that native Russian speakers see the color blue differently than the rest of us? It''s because they differentiate between lighter and darker shades of blue differently than other languages. Crazy. Language can impact the way your brain processes color. Which is why I want to talk about qualifying language.

Qualifying language means using words that weaken your message so they come across less powerful. Words and phrases like "just," "I mean," "I think" -- these are all main offenders that decrease the impact of your words and often how people perceive you.

We''ve all done this -- but I give a special shout out in the video below to my ladies. For too long we''ve not been encouraged to step into our full power so we subconsciously soften our words so they don''t intimidate others.

It''s time to break this pattern, together.

Here''s my suggestion: say what you mean, and mean what you say. Become aware of how frequently you weaken your language in important meetings, negotiations or conversations with your partner.

Nature is always listening to us. So is your body. Speak into existence what you want to manifest.

What if there was no such thing as "good" or "bad," Mia?

What if there was no such thing as "right" or "wrong"?

It may change your perception of the current situation.

Today I want to share a powerful concept from the Vedas that is bringing me comfort right now.

(Reminder that The Vedas are an ancient body of knowledge that gave us yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and many other healing modalities.)

According to the Vedas there is no good or bad, right or wrong. There is only creation, maintenance and destruction. All three flow in a cycle.

When we lead with creation, we tend to get Nature''s support. Life flows more elegantly. You know those moments of synchronicity when you think of someone and then they call?

The problem is that we humans like the results of our creation and then have a tendency to hold on -- leading to maintenance. Once that happens, destruction is on your heels waiting to clean house.

We as a society are in the midst of a lot of destruction. It''s tempting to simply categorize all of this as "bad". And while I in no way want to minimize the suffering that is currently happening as a result of destruction, there is also creation.

The Ozone hole is the smallest it''s been since its discovery. Air pollution is at a record low. Restaurants are transforming their businesses to provide much needed groceries.

People are learning new languages and cooking at home more than ever. Families are spending more time together playing games. People are meditating more and moving their bodies for the love of it.

And perhaps as we come out of this, we may mourn the loss of the old way of life, but we may also celebrate the new world we are creating. One where we choose to nurture our people and our planet.

On the other side of destruction is creation.
